Interesting what you had to say about learning on a manual transmission. My daughter wanted me to teach her how to drive and I said I would provided it was on a manual gearbox. She wasn't all that enthusiastic about the idea but she did consent. At first we spent a lot of time in empty parking lots learning proper clutch, throttle, and brake control. When we hit the streets she had that essentially under control and seldom stalled starting out. There was one day though that she lost all semblance over control over the clutch and throttle. I could see she was getting frustrated as I was so I told her to pull over onto the shoulder and stop (We were on a secondary highway that day.). I told her to stick it in fourth and start out and she looked at me and said, "I can't do that." I told her she was going to do it. She stalled it a couple of times which I had expected but then she finally managed to get it going. I told her to stop and do it again. Again she did it without any fanfare. I told her again and once again she pulled it off smooth as silk. I told her to stop again and shut the car off. She looked at me looking a little puzzled when I said "So now please explain to me how you start off smooth in fourth and not stall it, yet you are having trouble starting in first." She sat for a moment and then said, "you're right Dad." I'll get it this time and she did. We spent about two months all told and I even got her to the point where she new how to double clutch and down shift smooth as glass. I was proud of and told her so. A couple of days later she came home and told me that she had just broken up with her boyfriend and sad it was all my fault. I asked her, "How do you figure that." She told me she had informed him that he didn't know how to drive stick properly. He had a Volkswagen Jetta and it was his habit to throw it into neutral and coast up to the lights and stop signs and he couldn't start on a hill without using the emergency brake. When she told him he got upset and told her if she was so good, maybe she should drive. She took him up on his offer and he soon regretted making the offer. I guess she upshifted and down shifted like a pro occasionally even throwing in a double clutch or two and seldom used the brakes because she timed the lights so she did not have to stop. Apparently his ego just couldn't take it and when he dropped her off he said he wouldn't be back. I told her I was sorry but she just laughed and said with a big grin on her face, "Dad, it felt so good to jamb him up and show my skills. He had it coming because he was always putting me down because I'm a girl and and according to him girls can't do anything. I had had enough of his garbage so I blew his doors off just because I could. You made that possible Dad." In any event, her first car was a brand new Kia Forte that she paid for. When we went into the showroom the sales guy tried to talk her into an automatic. She wouldn't have it. She told looked at me with a bit of a smirk on her face and then told the salesman, "If I can get it out of the parking lot without stalling it will you stop pushing the automatic." The salesman said, "Yeah okay." They were gone about 45 minutes when they came back. She came in with a big smile on her face so knew she had pulled it off. The salesman walked over to me and said, "I didn't think she could do it but was I ever wrong. The best part was when we had to start while going up a hill. She had the clutch pushed in and her right foot heel and toe on the brake and gas. She let the clutch out until the motor bogged a little and gave it some gas while letting the brake off, and we started off without rolling back an inch. I was impressed. I've seen people who had been driving for years that can't handle a manual like she can." She bought the car and put about 200K on it in three years before she traded up. So that's my kid and I'm damn proud of her. She doesn't put up with crap and any joker who thinks he can buffalo her had better think again. @@SloppyMechanics yep you got red an green p plates an if you don't do the learner test in a manual you can't drive manual until you're on your green ps which is a year after
Excellent idea for a first car. I think learning to drive a manual is what really instils a love for the machine in a person, rather than simply the desire for sound and fury.
Also 100% agree with Al on learning in a manual. My family didn't have a manual car so I had to learn in an auto, and passed my test in an auto. I then failed my next test in a manual, just before moving to NZ. So in the end I went through the NZ licensing program, and converted it back to an Australian license when I moved back. I learnt a lot about vehicle control and driving awareness and pre-empting changes from driving manual, and there are also jobs that I have worked in heavy industry where you need a manual license. Learn in a manual if you can, because it's a pain in the arse to learn it afterwards!
I definitely thought about cars for my two boys when they were born and I helped them with their cars when needed and it really made me happy. Yep, dad things.
i agree with Al and learning to drive a manual, teaches you way more than putting it into D(umbass) and going. i've also found out recently from getting a bike license & riding on the road in quiet times or even just going around neighborhood, its taught me a tonne about situational awareness and actually being aware of others on the road and i highly recommend doing it even if he never wants to ride a motorbike on the road

Al and Woody thanks for the vid! This will be great for my auto class bunch of 17-18 yo's who are also sporting some ej20 ej25 p plater subies I always harp on about awd and understeer safety and generally pretty affordable cars for the students - cheers for the content
"Just loop it nugget garage style"
😂😂😂😂
Haven't loled like that in a while
@The Skid Factory dont have whatsapp sorry🤷♂️
It's a spam impersonator, does this mean we have finally made it!!!
@@theskidfactory i believe so, pretty sure they're the first youtube boss.
I'm a VW and chevy guy at the base but being a tech I always loved working on subys. So simple, every thing is where it makes sense!
"They have a certain ride height they should be, not dumped on the ground." Hooray! I loathe both raised and lowered cars. For off roading raising is kegit of course.
i was lucky enough to get dad's pride and joy for my 18th. XB Fairmont. 302 2 barrel, 2v, column shift auto. over the next few years he cried as i turned into a very fast car. some of my best memories of dad are under the car, swearing at each other very time we changed a diff. lol. every time we changed a diff again or uni joint again or engine mount again. lol. then seeing his eyes good wide as saucers the first time i took him for a ride in the finished product. i hope you and your son get to enjoy the the time learning, bonding and creating as did i. this is probably not the best idea for the son's car but have u considered putting small roots style blower on top of the crank case? customise serpentine belt path to drive it. no lag, off the shelf exhaust, cooler charge, no lag, less custom tubing, no lag? love the show, keep up the great vids and happy Easter you, your friends and family.
The price of old libertys just went up another 30% on gumtree
Always liked these and foresters for their sleeper-ness. No one expects them to have the same(or more) power as an STI
That intro though!!! 🤣🤣🤣
Epic fellas.
Your son is getting what is pretty much my dream daily car xD
When he grows up a little he will know what he's having :)
I need to snipe one of the EUDM ones for myself eventually, tho i preffer the prefacelift car more because its simplier without gimmicks like SI-Drive, and has very nice looking Momo wheel, tho i kind of like facelifted front end more, and everything else from pre-facelift.
That’s the coolest parent trap remake intro ever!
Can we just acknowledge the wholesome content from these awesome human beings in Australia
wholesome Al is wholesome
oh wow manual license vs auto is a difference there?
@@SloppyMechanics yep you got red an green p plates an if you don't do the learner test in a manual you can't drive manual until you're on your green ps which is a year after
@@SloppyMechanics We've got manual / auto licences in Finland aswell, I think most parts of europe /eu have it.
Excellent idea for a first car. I think learning to drive a manual is what really instils a love for the machine in a person, rather than simply the desire for sound and fury.
I'm watching this as I'm taking a break from swapping a 5 speed into a first gen lol.
Meanwhile, me with an 04 FXT 5 speed keeping an eye on things looking for a 6 speed running gear...
Nothing like a wagon for entertaining the ladies... 👍
That intro was gold 😂
You're a good Dad Al, nice work!
As your good mates would Say, "where's it going, in the bin."
Brilliant! I'm a car guy with a son, now 21. This resonates so well with me. We are subaru owners
When you are 11 and you ride Mod Max, your dad is a legend.
Allan was about to come on boost! Who knew? Great channel guys! Budget coil overs for the win! 👌✌️🤞
wanted to like this video at least 5 times.
also Al: I am up for adoption.
Good one Al. I did an outback for my son when he turned 16.
He loves it, gets his license in October.
If the car is for your son, get him wrenching working on something that's yours will give him a feeling of accomplishment and maybe take care of it.
He'll be on the job next week, he was at school when this was filmed.
This is already lining up to be my favorite build. My daughter just turned 16, so I know where you are coming from.
Al's evil twin is kinda funny not gonna lie haha
Also 100% agree with Al on learning in a manual. My family didn't have a manual car so I had to learn in an auto, and passed my test in an auto. I then failed my next test in a manual, just before moving to NZ. So in the end I went through the NZ licensing program, and converted it back to an Australian license when I moved back.
I learnt a lot about vehicle control and driving awareness and pre-empting changes from driving manual, and there are also jobs that I have worked in heavy industry where you need a manual license. Learn in a manual if you can, because it's a pain in the arse to learn it afterwards!
instrument of transport :) love it
I definitely thought about cars for my two boys when they were born and I helped them with their cars when needed and it really made me happy. Yep, dad things.
Dam, I just got Rick rolled 😂😂😂
The Turbo Komatsu sounds amazing!
ill trade you a 4.8 for a vape
What would you trade for two vapes though?
I love aussies commitment to subarus. They are great
i agree with Al and learning to drive a manual, teaches you way more than putting it into D(umbass) and going. i've also found out recently from getting a bike license & riding on the road in quiet times or even just going around neighborhood, its taught me a tonne about situational awareness and actually being aware of others on the road and i highly recommend doing it even if he never wants to ride a motorbike on the road
Never get old I uprated my mk1 Brumby with a wagon back in the UK in 1987. The Brumby Shifter was stock 2 wheel drive so we used the 4 wheel drive out of the wagon my P Plate car
Good job Al hope he appreciates all the hard work your doing for him
Yep Al, my son is 14 & grew up with initial D, he's into any 80/90's machine but R32 skyline is his favourite atm after I told him I personally had a '83 Datsun skyline.
I wish I kept that thing, they're gold mine now..
You a great Dad. From dad to dad thank you.
You are the best dad ever. Keep up the good work 👍
Alan is such a quality bloke, you can tell how much he loves his family, excited for this build, keep it up :)
Great editing matching the hammer swing with the beat
Was waiting for James May to pop in and say "Standard" during Al's lil rant about the coilovers
That black b spec is better condition then mine! Lots of work for me! Joys of rebuilding.
Nice, my first car was an 86 Toyota corona. Bought a top spec auto car with cooked motor, bought a rough basic manual. Dad and I then made two into one. Good times and that really got me hooked on cars
These aussie cars are so clean underneath man! I would dread to think what one of these wagons would like like underneath with that decent milage in the UK. So jealous!
Pretty fkn sweet 1st ride. 250hp+ boxer 6 wagon that happens to be one of the best looking wagons out there. Mint gift. On a side note, rhodesian ridgebacks are super cool pups too. Peace out.
I’m in a ez30r 2008 liberty spec b ( manual ) on green p plates now and it’s making 175kw at the wheels with full exhaust, intake, HD clutch and a really good tune 😜
Alan, I'm once again happy that you started doing your own content. This was another great video, thanks!
My dream daily build.. always nice to see more Subarus on channel.
Oh man I thought I was the only one considering this, my girls are 4 and 7. Had a little drove of the car but they love helping with Dads kenworth.
Those early (pre facelift) h6 6 speeds do have an internal oil pump! They only removed them later. Found that one out when striping mine down to replace syncros
