A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is issued, then a Tornado Watch goes in to effect.....
The Day becomes as Dark as Night!
Then comes the hail, the lightning, heavy rain and strong winds.

I’m really scared of storms, so as a means to overcome it, I’m taking the exposure therapy route by watching videos of people who literally camp during this sort of weather. Seeing how enthusiastic and calm you were reassured me that my fear isn’t something to become terrified of. Nature isn’t our enemy. Thanks for your bravery!

Ikr? I feel like I’d freak out. I’m not afraid of storms really, but it’s different to experience it inside your home where you know you’re protected, and in a camping tent 😰 I don’t think I’d react as calmly as he did to a tornado warning 😂

I slept in my tent with my dog through a storm just like that last summer. the next morning, I left everything and went home. when I came back the next morning after another storm had gone through the previous night, the tent had collapsed. So glad I listened to my gut and didn't try to ride out a second night in the tent in that kind of weather. it was nerve racking to say the least... but I was hell bent on having the experience and now I can say I did that!! and lived... my dog slept right through the whole thing...haaa!! nothing bothers him at night...

I spent quite a few years working for a ski area in northern New Mexico. Your comment about black bears being scared , reminded me of a couple of times while using a mulcher to stop some erosion. I had a 100 foot of hose stretched out and turned around to find a very curious bear about half way between me and the truck. They eventually walked away. But not before hanging out long enough to make me nervous. We were probably 5-6 miles from paved road or anything. Anyway just sharing fond memories

Yes, old logging roads, trees planted in something resembling rows, and most all of the trees are 'young' - certainly not an old growth forest.

I remember a backpacking trip we went on in northern New Mexico. We got into a storm that dumped over an inch of hail in the ground. My sisters were freezing and my Dad made the right call. We all turned around and headed back to the car. Disappointed with the outcome, but I knew we did the right thing and avoided someone getting sick or hurt. That trip taught me exactly what you were talking about being flexible. Great trip, fun video! Thanks!

Man I love your videos so much. I watch one every night once I get in bed & have seen almost all of them. Some I've watched several times. I dream of being able to go out in the woods & brave the weather, the crazier the better, but have not done so yet. I just want to thank you for posting these videos because I thoroughly enjoy each of them. Happy camping brother

I need to get one of those tarps myself, but I'd probably go with a different Aquaquest model instead. I build my gearkit around optional visibility. There are high-vis items in the kit (including some items I can simply reverse to a reflective side), but the primary configuration is designed to blend in.

I had tent camped in many different types of weather but never a whopper thunderstorm.........until!!!...a traditional archery event in northcentral Pennsylvania last July. A frog strangler with cloud-to-ground lightning, gusty winds and pea to marble sized hail. When I got home I told my wife I could check "Been hailed on tent camping" off my list!

Be careful out there, black bears are not always afraid of people. A man that was very experienced like you said the same thing you did and was pulled from his tent in the night by a 500 lb. black bear and eaten. It only takes one time to end up dead. I always have bear spray and guns, it pays to be careful.

Luke your so SOOO right sir, one,, too me your mindset makes or breaks you. Where others will fell you will flourish with the right one. An in the hour of your deepest darkness you " I pray so very hard, an know there will be a sunshine" if you keep pumping your knees! " this was a thing a sixth grade football couch told me." You never stop! My belief in the good Lord, my family, is what makes me believe in myself. So when you have an awesome excitement of being in the woods under dire circumstances, you pop out a five minute shelter an set your mind at ease an enjoy a so so cup of coffee. You sir are blessed!

When I seen the Mayfield tornado approaching on stream, I turned the scanners on. Within minutes I hear someone report a train car was thrown across the road. You'd have to find a decent Boulder. Remember, them trees are flying missiles, even shredding itself into missile splinters. The tornado myth of they dont crawl up mountains is proven very wrong as well. Although you'd wanna be on the opposite side of the tornado direction. Great thinking with the rock idea, I don't think many would of thought of it. Simplest precautions can save your life.

Once again I am absolutely astounded by the high-quality Taster's Nasty content in Luke's videos. I love the over-night camps, the day trips, the honest dialogue, the cinematography, the musical conclusions, and of course the agenda-free gear reviews; but the Taster's Nasty content on this channel is off the hook. It keeps bringing me back again and again. Some rain, a tarp, and a cup of the Nasty is all a man needs to find peace in the great outdoors.

I also love tarps! Yes, I agree a tarp shelter can be pitched anywhere even with trees absent. I noted you never use hiking poles, manufactured or self made. Either can be used to set up an emergency shelter. I've used two lengths of willow branches to set up a Swedish ground shelter that will defy very strong winds. My survival bag in my van (full time van lifer) includes a safari 10X10 Aqua Quest and an emergency two-sided blanket from a ground sheet and for a visual rescue needed set up. I love your tarps color, and that of your apparel and pack. Great adventure with great survival advice...you rock, Luke!

Oh hell yeah! ! ! Luke, Tony, count me in: I LOVE trips in the rain. I'm from Seattle, Washington where most of us have webbed feet anyway, so yeah, the rain is never an issue. My wife hates the rain the thunder, but I love it. There is nothing like a hot meal, hot coffee and the sound of the rain pounding on the tarp or tent and free light show you get from mother nature. Thanks for sharing that hike with us all. Wish I'd been there with you! ! ! Brian

I love tarp camping! I have ridden out some hellish weather underneath of a 6 x 8 tarp. Some think that I am weird for taking a tarp and a closed-cell foam pad on even a day hike. You never know what can happen & tarps are so fast and easy to set up. That was intense! I love going backpacking in the rain; it is nature's crowd control.

At this present time I am totally living off the grid in middle of a forest have been for the last 9 years getting away from it all love the story about the rain yes it is fantastic here in Oregon we don't get much lightning especially along the coast but we do get some hellafied wind storms and Ice storms we see winds up to 70 miles to 100 miles an hour but my place Stands Strong it's not a cabin I have an A-frame and I have a canvas tent under the A-frame covered in tarps again enjoyed your videos.
