How To Sing - Released High Notes
Every week we give free video vocal tips to our newsletter subscribers. In this tip, Brett talks about turning the voice upside down to find release in your highest notes.

Thanks Brett. Something that I tell my students is to treat every note like it's on a horizontal line. That eliminates the tendancy to think "up and down" with high and low notes. I see so many singers lift their chin, rise onto their toes, lift their eyebrows and widen their mouth as they sing higher. Moving your hand in a horizontal flowing pattern and following it with your eyes will help you kick the "up and down" habit. Excellent advice about modifying vowels as you sing higher.
Genius way of explaining high notes release... 👏
His voice is high O_O
yours can be too!
His teaching method definitely gives me the impression that he's a bit baked with his approach of visualizing singing via crying babies or water droplets. Awesome.
Yay!!! I can do high notes now!! thanks so much!!
Glad this video helped, Jasmine Williams
We call it covering or vowel modification in classical singing. Narrowing the vowel or modifying it to some neutral vowel at the top. Classical trained teachers never say to open up high notes actually.. Just something I wanted to comment since it was mentioned.
This is pure gold omg. I was getting kinda into whistle voice just trying to emulate him then playing on my own. Wow.
You have got this! So glad you are here on our channel! Don't miss everything on our website--we have amazing articles, more videos, and info about all that we have going on. Here is the link: singingsuccess.com
awesome range you've got !
Thanx a lot for that. I agree that they are not high notes only different notes. thanx
thanx for the tip Brett!! The "drip" visual really helps!!
Incredible! Very cool way to understand that...
That makes sense. I feel that when I'm singing higher notes (I have a lower voice--I'm a female), I feel like my cords are tensing up because I'm opening my mouth wider to sing. When I'm using your "upside down" technique, it's easier to sing.
Thank you for posting this!
Brilliant!
Helpfulll thank you!!!
Immer wieder fantastisch!
it helps me alot thanks
you are by far the best trainer
Thanks broda, Your tips are amazing....
This video is very help full to me... :)
God bless you :)
but giving these videos out for free are still awesome and thanks !
Great!
helps a lot... thanks
Hi Mr Brett Manning. I have recently discovered that I can use whistle register. I make whistle notes in a puppy like voice use in one of your videos. Which of your courses can help me develop that whistle register.
He is a boss!!
Master!
Wellll I think you’re awesome and this is awesome
@Ocelot911 G4 is pushed to the limit, my first break is around E4 cause I'm a baritone, but if I try the mix right after the E4 notes are week and too heady therefore I have to push it, my mix begins to be audible around G#4 A4 but yet the sounds is too thin and sissy compared to my chest register, I don't sing metal so I'm not looking for a thin and girly sound, I just wanna have a full one voice able to sing at least up to an A4 with no break, but it's hard for a dark voice
OMG the dripping works, jus make me sing my G above high way effortless and consistent. But can't do it when I do the lip rolls though, the pitch start to disappear when I lip rolls E above male high C, please answer me...
@chojinkid Tbh man im still learning I've only been singing around for a year. Like my first break is around there so i think what we need to learn is to mix it with head voice so then we can go higher like High C. This is with the mah's etc. When I do the "buh buhs" the ones that makes your larynx drop i can go higher up to High C only in that exercise. Just make sure you never strain. When you sing the G4 does it sound nice or is it like pushing?
Awesome :)
Merry Christmas
Thanks, bret. Really interesting. I guess the effect of 'oh' to 'oo' is to convince less and less of the cords to vibrate, until you only have the slightest amount vibrating.
Still having a little trouble regaining my ability to hit higher note because my voice is changing do you have any more tips that could help me not to strain my voice and make it easier to hit these notes
Would a stay plate effect how my head voice or upper tones resonate?
I had a whimpy one octave voice and with singin success ive now got 3 octaves. 2 of which are really usefull and sound good and the 3rd needs tweaking. Really good course only if you put in the work though. I had vocal fry in bass cleff C but now i can sing down to bass clef A and sometimes Ab and it sounds deep and soothing. my vocal fry now starts on G in bottom of bass clef but im hoping to Extend down to E. Now i can hit all the notes in Karake songs no strain but i need to make my voice sound less monotonous so im working on vibrato etc. good course tho.
@chojinkid yeah thats where my bridge was but with prac u can do it. like now my break is G#4. But eventually u gotta smooth out the breaks anyways, just keep singing on it.
no disrespect at all. just wondering if that is using vocal fry to belt. just trying to understand the technique bc I am not a belter.
I have a question. For a beginner, what exercises should I start with? I know the breathing methods, but like range of practice, vocal exercises. Where should I begin?
look at him, what do you think he did 4:20 pm?
@Ocelot911 my problem is that I haven't found the right position, either I flip or I push, and if i wanna sing higher than a G4 the voice is too heady, too weak and sissy, useless in a few words
Woooooow this guy is good!!!!!!
I'm singing from now on in my school show man id love to hit the high G
Lol! You are ready to go! Seriously - So glad you are here on our channel! Don't miss everything on our website--we have amazing articles, more videos, and info about all that we have going on. Here is the link: singingsuccess.com
Hey Brett, I'm having trouble closing the vocal cords to sing these released high notes. Once I get around bB4, B4, and C5 (with middle C being C4) I feel like i cant get higher without opening up more and increasing the volume. Any help would be appreciated. I am a 17 year old male by the way.
@nickmeredith002 you should watch his other videos because explaining the difference between head voice and falsetto..
@AussieVocalCoach Now I have the assurance that this is going to be some high-quality video! :)
quick question, is the strength from your diaphragm required much for hitting these high notes? coz he doesnt look like using his much but ive always heard of the importance of it?...
berry nais
Yo this is great
We agree! So glad you are here on our channel! Don't miss everything on our website--we have amazing articles, more videos, and info about all that we have going on. Here is the link: singingsuccess.com
especially when he was describing the water drop coming down from a leaking ceiling! haha!
Hi,
My (normal?) range is baritone (bass baritone).
When i do lip rolls, i reach high c for tenors and one and a half octave higher.
The same, when i yawn (classical method).
When i do the mum and nay exercises, the high c for tenors is the last note i can reach clean.
Any advice?
Regards
Andy
be used on an operatic stage?
4:47 ALIENS!
It's rather funny watching a scraggly rocked-out guy doing little drips with his voice and hands :P
You know whats funny Brett. I have the singing success Audio and let me begin by saying it has helped me tones!!!
Anyway, when I practice with it, i stop on A flat as the scales are going high but once i hear your voice say '' and back down'' i can sing a g above high C note without even thinking about it.
I try to go back a little to when it was going up and i can do E above the female high C and finish and start going back down again. But if i go too far, my head starts telling we are going higher and i start to push.
But when going down, oh any scale. At first I couldn't believe those were the same scales I was singing so i totally get what you mean by this.
I'm a soprano, and have no problem with the A, Bb, to B transition... my problem is F, F# to G. Do you have any exersizes that would help me to connect?
I wish I could understand this but this just makes absolutely no sense to me
Which part, CJ Davis? we may have a different explanation in another video on our website.
You may need to start from the ground up. Maybe watch some introduction to singing videos for beginners. I felt the same for a while. It didn't make sense to me and I managed to find some other singing videos that discuss/introduce these ideas he's talking about. Starting over can be quite effective.
Yout fucking awsome teacher man
5:26 "...with the Brett Manning Associate in this video" But this IS Brett.
Now I imagine there being many Brett Mannings running this program.
great vid btw.
ah, i hear the difference. so is there three distinct "gears" to our voices then: chest, head, and falsetto? or more than three?
I like this guy ~ XD
@krunchykrunchy no D:< but i never had vocal lessions.
Brett Manning you RAWK...!! Thanks for the very professional tips...!! You really got style, and don't mind the haters.. it's like throwing pearls before swines.. Thanks again dude.. I just might hit you or one of your associate up for a Skype lesson, it would be great to learn from the Best..!!
@nickmeredith002
its head voice not falsetto there is a very significant difference
Not easy for everyone, but it really works for those who persist
What does persist mean and this video didn't teach he any thing at all
Arianna Suarez persistence means to me that if you really can do it, you should not give up until you reach it, even if it takes a couple of years. Singing right is not easy, don't believe in quick formulas. I still have a long way to go, but now I can sing easily with no effort songs that I use to scream to reach the same notes. People learn in different ways, and maybe he was not very clear, but it was enough for me to grasp the idea and practice, a lot. I don't know how much singing experience you have but I believe that maybe you have to be in a certain level to actually get it. Let me know if I can be of any further assistance (I am not a singing teacher and not affiliated at all with Brett, just a fellow singer trying to help)
I actually come here to learn but now i come and read the comment and laugh
Let's all admit it
We can watch this over and over again
and still not know what the heck he means
And everytime end up thinking to ourselves
He has an awsome beard!
which is pretty much all we stare at till the end on the vid! =D
interesting!
It's... It's too daaamn High !
my vocal coach tells me that raising my eyebrows doesnt worrk, but i feel as though it's built into my muscle memory and it helps get those notes...i guess what i really need to find out is whether or not i'm singing higher...or trying to hit different notes.
hmmm tomorrow I will try again and again
@mallymahalik nvm, someone's already pointed it out ;p
"Hi, I'm beard manning and here's a vocal tip"
How do i apply this with chest voice?
U should get his singing success DVD.
I've always had that problem with having a "comedic sound" as I go for the high notes. Tight and uncomfortable, silly sound. He changed all that in a few minutes. Brett Manning is amazing.
I sing at church and one of my biggest problem is that my voice gets tire and i can't reach high notes and i lose my breath…. any tips please!!!
As i approach the top, i feel the "uhh go to "ooh"
Hahaha ;p
I cant get it
It sounds like you're not an SLS-trained singer. We don't deal with any of that. It comes naturally with the exercises that we do. The exercises do all the work. That builds muscle memory, and when we sing, the muscle memory kicks in. Simple. Habits like the soft palate rising, can be fixed by a coach.
Luke Skywalker in casual wear teaching about singing. Bestow upon me your wisdom!
I was about to say "Brett, you've really let yourself go!" but then I saw the date it was created.
why does his voice sounds tired and raspy on the high notes?
Do you think this technique can used on an actual operatic stage?
of course!
+Singing Success | Brett Manning Studios without amplification? wouldnt you be clouded by the music?
+Singing Success | Brett Manning Studios especially the orchestra?
+Singing Success | Brett Manning Studios what if you didn't want to flip into whistle, could it be possible to still use the technique in straight head voice, even in the 6th octave?
This is hilarious. Lol
I have the same range as Brett.

waht the heck do I have to do to sound good? I mean, I think I'm tecnically good, I have a 3,5 octaves range, I can belt easily, etc, etc. but I just don't like the tone of my voice (and nobody does hahaha) what do I do to sound decent (at least)?
what*
depends on what you want your voice to sound like and how it actoualy sounds
I absolutely agree :p
Anyway, I think i've improved a bit... now I can sing """"good"""" from C2 to C5... But still cant get to A5 without sounding like shit :/
+lucas villa quiroz That's really cool!
lol just realized that the last name Manning is funny
this guy's range... O_o
when i'm training with this video, people around me think i am crazy
Thanks , it really helps , but somehow the real problem when singing is the powerful mix voice .
even though im going up, it feels like im going down.
its so whistle like
How are you making those sounds? Ain't no way I'm hitting any of those notes
@SoftWhiteThroat No, press 3 and right after you get "like a," press 8... and repeat. lmao.
It's a falsetto. Any guy can hit these notes with no vocal training. My house mate can go off the piano it's quite insane hearing a pitch higher than a piano... I want to learn to sing high notes in my chest voice. Bb4 b4 and Top Cs and above in chest voice.
Sirens at 2:50 :D
REGINE VELASQUEZ love you so much
I think I’m freaking out man...What? Dude... in wiggin out

VERY confusing to me.. I think the sound has to go inward which is very tricky and difficult to do while maintaining a single breath.... soft palate has to stay open for freedom, vocal position, and resonance..
I could hit a c5 after this
Press 2 than 3
