As a person who grew up with Dora I can confirm I learned more from staring at the wall than I did the show. I don't remember a single thing from Dora, I learned more from anime because anime actually teaches people meaningful things.
Instead of spanish she taught English in my country. I remember one of the words was "open" and one of the others was "stop" and "bag", so I learned at least something from it as a kid, but I wasn't particularly big fan of the show.
When i was younger, swiper was my favorite. Idk but he was considered complex at my age. Probably because he needs help too and sometimes he's even the good guy. Its probably not that deep now that i think about it
I remember the "hic-boom-oh" episode. I heard my dad say to my mom from the kitchen "I swear to god if I hear Dora say 'hic boom oh' one more time, I'm never letting Grace watch Dora again."
He has my sympathies. I had to endure this because of my younger brother when he was little, and oddly enough the DVDs we had were old ones from when me and my older brother were at that same age.
There's actually a grown up Dora, called 'Dora and Friends, Into the City.' where Dora has left the jungle, and she now lives in the city. She's left all her old friends, (Including Map, Backpack, and Boots), and she met new friends. Instead of Map, she's got a google map sort of thing, and instead of backpack, she has a magic charm braclet that she can get special things to help with the task. It's honestly better than the original Dora.
I actually watched it a little for the sole purpose of seeing if it actually made Dora tolerable. It was actually slightly enjoyable, I was genuinely shocked.
@@kawaiieva2050 There was an entire episode in the second season about Dora returning to the rainforest, where the majority of characters from the original series make a cameo or are part of the story, and there was a sequel episode to that which was two 11 minute episodes instead of one 22 minute one. Wow, I recall Dora being much less annoying from when I watched her as a kid. Also, I thought the troll character was called the Grumpy Old Troll and not the Hairy Old Troll.
Yeah, I loved this show as a kid. Like it was my favorite show until I was a toddler (and even after I might have still used Boots in my imaginary fanfics until I was like 7. I thought his design was really cute for some reason). With my sensory issues at the time because I’m Autistic, I probably wouldn’t have reacted well to such a high-pitched voice grating constantly. I even heard from my parents I think that the voice did actually become worse as the show went on.
I'm a brazillian born in the early 2000's, so Dora was a small part of my childhood. Thankfully, the brazillian dub is actually very good, and made most characters and recurring songs sound less annoying than the original. Also, fun fact: Since spanish is very similar to portuguese, here in Brazil they changed the language Dora teaches to english instead.
I'm from Portugal, and.. we got the short end of the stick when it comes to voices. Dora's voice is.. a generic girly voice, and everyone's voices are either squeaky or horse. It's a pain, and unsufferable. Like in Brazil, she also does teach English instead of Spanish.
Honestly crocodiles and alligators are completely different animals with different reactions. Alligators mainly choose flight over fight if they get spooked by a human. There are many videos that show this too, like the alligator on the golf course
I really hated missing Super Why, so if it was coming up soon, I would literally keep Sprout on the channel no matter WHAT was on, which I was chill whenever I had to wait through Angelina Ballerina, Astroblast, or Justin Time, in fact, those other 3 shows are also pretty good actually, but than there's those TRAINWRECKS I DREADED coming on, like Noddy Toyland Detective, and Wiggles (yes, I hated that show), the worst culprit of this was Tree Fu Tom, I HATED IT SOOOOO BAD, that sometimes it would tempt me to LEAVE AND MISS SUPER WHY and just watch my Garbage Pail Kids Cartoon DVDs instead. I think I hate Tree Fu Tom because it was all about EXERCISING, WORKING OUT, I HATE EXERCISING AND WORKING OUT. But even though Tree Fu Tom is terrible, I do remember one episode that ACTUALLY had an interesting concept, the episode was basically about a berry getting stuck on some pipe thingy causing the mudusa juice to flow everywhere (ooze that if you touch it, you turn to stone) and for magic to ALWAYS do the OPPOSITE of what you tell it to, looking back at it, that's actually a VERY interesting concept, basically the ONE episode of Tree Fu Tom that I kinda like, still had to work out, but story is 7/10
I grew up with both this show and mandatory Spanish classes EVERY SINGLE SCHOOL YEAR since kindergarten. I learned more Japanese from watching anime than I did Spanish when it was being shoved down my throat.
Just be glad that “bear in the big blue house” and “blue’s clues” (both Steve and Joe episodes- depending on which ever one you grew up with) were at least fun/subtle and interact with their audience in their own calm ways instead of being insufferable compared to this.
And for the case of Blue's Clues, I can imagine Rie Takahashi and Erica Mendez coming back as Mash Kyrielight because well, my fellow Senpais, who wants to play Blue's Clues with Mash?
Well @PhantomStrider, if it makes you feel any better, the upcoming Dora reboot series on Nick Jr./Paramount+ set for release in two weeks removed most of the annoying silent long pauses and only keeps the “What was YOUR favorite part of the trio? (pause for ten seconds) I like that part too!” one at the end.
7:28 technically speaking, “blue's clues" does the whole “jumping into and exploring a new medium” concept, but that was what made "blue’s clues” a fun and imaginative educational preschool show.
I was told that when I was younger I loved this show but all I remember is a faint memory of watching a scene where Dora was riding in a boat and asked the audience "can you see any dolphins?" As the camera panned over to show the dolphins right behind her. Me, my brother and my cousin laughed our little kid asses off for a good half hour.
Phantomstrider I realized this a couple weeks ago but the reason why Dora the explorer acts the ways that she does is because she literally a computer program.
I guess it make sense why the opening theme in the early seasons introduced us to a live-action footage of exploring the rooms and zoomed to the camera where we met Dora and her world. And don't forget about the blue arrow though.
@@founboy78 Yes. That explained why people complained about Dora haven't noticed anything beside her until the clicked on it. So maybe it implied that she's even aware that she's in a computer game?

At the greek dub of this show dora teaches children english. Also the translators change the swipper's gender from female to male whenever they feel like(greek language has 3 genders and some animals have exclusively one gender, the word fox is feminine, thats why they often reffer to him as "she") Edit:I just want to add that sometimes they reffer to him as "i alepou i kleftra"which means the fox the thief(both thief and fox are feminine in this sentence) and other times they call him "o kleftis i alepoy)which means the thief the the fox(the word kleftis is a masculine word for thief). The reason they change the order of the words fox and thief is so it will sound less weird. Edit 2:at greek we don't have the stupid rule english language has that does not allow us to put the word the before someone's name. Also we have many different words for the.
PhantomStrider, thank you. This title has become a meme amongst my family. Not only did you help provide an amazing inside joke between us, you also gave a really good metacommentary on the writing of this show.
Blue's Clues does the whole "jumping into another medium" as well. So does Between the Lions. And I think those are pretty good shows.

Also the translators change the swipper's gender from female to male whenever they feel like(greek language has 3 genders and some animals have exclusively one gender, the word fox is feminine, thats why they often reffer to him as "she")

The reason they change the order of the words fox and thief is so it will sound less weird.

Oh hell, my nostalgia is holding me at gunpoint. I loved this show as a kid and it was one of my favorite shows to watch on Nick Jr. and Noggin. But of course, every show has a decline and this one is no different. Once Dora got all bright and CGI, I stopped watching. The old Dora is pretty much childhood for me.
Dude saying noggin is a whole different case of nogestelga holt crap
As someone who can speak both fluent English and Spanish, I think this show wasted it’s potential.
The concept is good but the execution is a mess.
Agreed
*Yes.*
Strongly agreed.
14:41 I'm gonna stop you right there. Breaking the fourth wall is a momentary acknowledgement of their fictional world. For Dora, there is no fourth wall, which means she can interact with the audience any time she wants.
Apparently Dora’s definition of teaching things to kids is treating them like they’re stupid
Is it wrong that after seeing her next to Jafar I want to see that fight?
Jafar would (and I'm basing this off his confrontation with Aladdin): turn Boots into a toy monkey, put her friends in a giant hourglass, and she would...somehow befriend a genie?
@@jules6735 I mean...Dora befriending a genie DOES sound like something that would happen in the show. He probably wouldn't sing "Friend Like Me", though.
@@isobelmiller7464 Yeah, it does!
There’s this online program my school district wants us to use called teachtown. (For context, my students are “special needs.”) And I kid you not, the narrator talks like Dora and it’s awful. 😭 So condescending.
@@jules6735 I would feel so bad for Jafar lol
3:20 The only good thing about later seasons is at least they changed up the lyrics to the "I'm the Map" song, it's at least tolerable
Is anyone creeped out by the fact that Dora seems to be smiling about everything? Like, she could be telling the audience that Boots is being carried away to be eaten by a vulture and she'd still have that vapid smile on her face.
Dora: *Blank smile* Boots is being captured by the vulture! Can you say "buitre"? *Long awkward pause* Good! *Vapid stare*
Boots: *Off-screen* He's pecking out my guts!
Dora: *Blank smile* We should tell the vulture to stop being a bully. Can you say "Please stop"? *Long awkward pause* Good! *Continues to stare lifelessly into the abyss*
This sounds like what happens in that SNL parody “Maraka.”
I can just imagine this exchange in the Dora helps the birthday Wizzle
Dora: What does the hippo wish for?
Hippo: (In a growly demonic voice)*I wish to be freed from this accursed paper prison, so that I may take vengeance on the world*
Dora:(Awkward silence as the hippo vanishes)
I'd highly recommend everyone check AOK's "Dora the Grownup" series, it's funny as hell.
Have you ever been evicted from your apartment because you weren't able to pay rent, since you were too busy buying alcohol to drown your sorrows in?

Have you ever watched a kids show you hate for a week in order to make a video
Even as a kid I could not stand Dora, I wanted to watch spongebob.
Same
Cause SpongeBob wasn't that annoying and nauseating
"...magical capes given to them by the hairy old troll!"
Hey, that's not a nice thing to call Santa! (Cuts to the next scene which shows it was the actual Troll who gave them the capes and not Santa) Oh. Never mind.
5:15 “Look Dora it’s a giant”
“boots that very rude”
“Just because this young lady is taller than you, it doesn’t make her a giant.”

Also, I just love how both Dora and Boots borrowed elements from Blue's Clues to skidoo into both a book and a picture and do stuff that was pretty dang creative of both Viacom and Nick Jr lol!
Dora's still not as bad of a role model as Caillou.
Or any of the trains from bleh. TAF.
Where were child services when this girl was running around without supervision?
Catching Swiper.
“Dora Saves the Prince” was especially abysmal for me to sit through, looking back on it. The Witch getting off scot-free is enough to drive anybody with common sense batty!
