Ranking All of the Typings Worst to Best

There are eighteen typings in Pokemon, and naturally, some are better than others. I decided today to take a look at the typings from worst to best, and find out where they all fall. I put a lot of research into this one to come up with what I objectively believe is the worst typing all the way through to the best. I even ended up shelving my own opinions in a way as I just looked at the facts when ranking these, so I hope you guys appreciate just how technical things will get. Now that we have the introduction out of the way, let's get started, because we have eighteen different typings to plow through!

Ice type needs to to get a buff in Hail. Maybe Physical defence buff. It was recently buffed with most Ice types getting freeze dry is a decent buff, but it needs more than just that.
Add resistance to Normal and Flying and you have something a bit better too.
Honestly, It's more the Defensive nature of it, rather than the Offensive. Imagine Glaceon, who can block neutral hits very well, in Gen 1. It's more powerful offensively than Jynx with STAB and has 4x the Physical Defense. Yes it's slow, but that's beside the point. It'd be powerful in OU, even if it's not Top 5. It'd arguably be Top 5 Ice Types, rivaling Jynx (as I said before) and even Lapras, arguably the best Ice Type because of the Water Typing as well.

I would also suggest giving ice more resistances instead of the defense buff in hail... beeing only resistent to itself does make it super awkward to switch them into resisted moves - and weakness to stealth rock does not help either. On top of that fire, fighting and rock attacks are everywhere.
Resistance to water, flying and ground is what i would suggest. Normal type attacks are already hampered enough by 2 resistances and one imunity, but ground, water and flying all could easily be less effective against ice while still beeing pretty well rounded offensivly. This would alco cement their role as ground- and flying counters.
Xelianow water comes in all forms: Cold, normal, and hot. Scald could have done extra damage to Ice Types because it’s “hot” water. Neutrality to water makes far more sense than you realize. And unfortunately, ground needs to be neutral as well since earthquakes break up ice all the time, through Tectonic Plate shifts. Normal Ground moves should be neutral as well. A new ability called “Blue Ice” would be helpful as it would have the same effect as Filter and Rock Solid.
Sad as it is, giving Ice Types resistances when it wouldn’t make sense goes against game mechanics. Defensive utility is what the Ice Type needs, but it still has to make sense to a degree.

Ice consists of water, therefor it is resistant to water.
Frozen ground can't be moved that easily.
Ice is too hard for flying things to damage them.
See, it does make sense^^ To be honest, many of the type advantages don't realy make sense... things that fly for example don't receive extra damage from electricity in real life either. And i would rather have a game thats balanced than one that is "realistic"^^
Xelianow flying would be the first to get hit. Tallest object acts like a lightning rod, thus if your high off the ground (ie flying) then you’re more likely to get hit by lightning in a storm.
Bugs can usually see at night and as such have an advantage in the night. Lockstin and Gnoggin explains the rulings better than I can. Also, Ground Attacks usually involve shaking the Earth, which can crack ice with enough force. Same can be said for sound base moves, thus a neutrality because the power of the Earth utilized can vary just like the pitch and power of sound.
I really recommend you watch Lockstin and Gnoggin for the typing videos, they make a good deal of sense for Pokémon Logic and such.
Dude, being weak to “worse typings” is a strength, not a weakness. Would you rather a type be weak to all the best Pokémon so that typing had no usefulness at all? It’s called balancing.
I thought the same, not to mention he didn't keep abilities into account; just base stats. That's why he brought up Slaking's as a good Pokemon when we all know Truant holds it back like crazy

I think the list is pretty good tbh. Not taking into account a few mistakes, it's still very accurate. Fairy and steel deserve 1st and 2nd. Any pokemon with a fairy/steel or fairy&steel typing is game breaking in the current meta. Take zacian or mega mawile etc. I think dragon should be 3rd though and psychic even though is good, maybe should be a bit lower. But other than that I think its okay enough.

Yeah, this list isn't accurate, he's right about Fairy being No1 as I called it before watching but made some weird decisions, like Flying should be higher imo because of its offensive capability, and he kinda ignored the ice type offense too and focused on defence, but they all are just opinions
@@vibra7 I would also have to say that the normal type being so high is inaccurate, too. A lot of his arguments came down to a high average of total stats; and while Slaking may have the highest base stat total of all non-legendary Pokemon, it's unfortunately NOT a good Pokemon, and therefore not a good argument to justify placing the type so high up on the list. And I also don't understand why having such diverse type coverage on average was used as an argument for the normal type (especially since it was not mentioned for the dragon type, which also boasts this quality) when what was mostly mentioned was good moves for the type itself.

Steel is the best typing.
Fairy, dragon, dark and ghost are top 5.
Ground and water are probably 6 & 7.

@Alvin Nah. Its perfectly fine. I use save states all the time and i feel like im just saving the game normally.
The fact that flying is weak to terrible types is very good for the flying type, because they have to bring Pokémon with those terrible types (ice and rock). Also it’s immunity to ground is massive, which is why you see a flying type on nearly every team.

My list
1. Steel: amazing defensively, solid offensively, can't be poisoned(unless corrosion) resist rocks and most reliable type I feel.
2. Water: Good resistances and only really worried about electrics as they usually have ice moves on deck.Their counters aren't as common and waters have great BP moves and coverage/bulk to make them a constant threat.
3. Fairy: better psychic type, spammable STAB, really only countered by poisons as steels worry about fire coverage they usually have. Good support movepools and really nice resistances although being so prominent makes steel/poison coverage viable on hard hitting fighting/darks.
4. Ground: Tied for most super effective hits, great resistances and electric immunity. EQ is a great spammable move, usually can carry rock coverage for anything that it doesnt hit with that. Biggest con is losing against grass, water/ice can beat it but doesnt like switching into EQ.
5. Fighting: ties for most super effective hits, dark type counter is a big plus. Almost always can carry the coverage they need, high BP moves and can usually take 1 super effective hit and pound the frail typings that use them. Good setup mons usually having priority.
6. Fire: A lot of resistances for some reason and great super effective hits. Being weak to super common types and stealth rocks are the only reason they aren't top 3.
7. Ghost: not much resists it and has two useful immunities and a couple okay resistances. Good support moves and usually hit hard enough. Lack of physical mons/moves sucks but overall a better normal type imo.
8. Dragon: a little overrated as them being good is more a product of their monstrous stats. Good resistances to the OG starter types but with fairies and steel it is easy to deal with dragons using dragon type moves, either locked into outrage or forced to use a weaker move. Lack of super effective hits but usually have solid coverage to keep them as a premier threat.
9. Dark: great support moves, best attacking move in the game in knock off and hits hard. A little frail usually but only type that resists ghosts(ik normal is immune) and has a good psychic immunity. Can be effective even if defensive with foul play.
10. Electric: like poison but without the psychic weakness and a status that can potentially be more useful. Really only fears ground and they usually don't have great coverage, especially if only monotype.
11. Poison: very underrated, great defensively and even when resisted can leave a poison most of the time. Can't miss toxic or be poisoned. Really only worry about Earthquakes and the less common psychic type.
12. Psychic: Dropped hard recently, fairy is a better version of them with better resistances. Still hit very hard but dark and steel walk all over them unless they want to hit a focus blast.
13. Normal: middle of the pack type, more versatile but lack super effective stab/resistances. Most can tailor their sets to beat what they need.
14. Flying: rocks weakness and other common weaknesses combined with inability to take hits. Hits weak types and really only benefits of being able to take on fighting which usually they can't switch into. Strong moves and reliable recovery/defog is big plus.
15. Grass: great support move pool and useful resistances to ground/water. Lots of common weaknesses and needs time to set up recovery, usually lack power to be big threats.
16. Rock: good resistances but lots of weaknesses and often 4x with another type. Shaky accurate moves, stealth rocks are saving them from being lower.
17. Bug: useful resistances but shafted on what it gets resisted by, types it hits are only semi useful.
18. Ice: great offensively, needs secondary type if it wants to live long(unless you're avalugg)
While I agree with most of what you said, your assessment of the dragon type only being good because of high stats is not entirely correct. While having such high stats on average does help quite a bit, there are still a few other things that you overlooked that push the type over the edge, namely:
1) They have few types that resist them; only 2 (steel and fairy), which is less than any other type has. As a result, those 2 types are a lot more prominent.
2) To go along with the type not being resisted by much, the type also boasts a few attacks that all dragons can learn that have a very high base power, allowing them to hit quite hard if not resisted.
3) Like with the normal type, dragon types can have quite expansive movepools that let them hit a wide variety of types super effectively, which lets them threaten just about any team if backed up well.
It is for these reasons that the type was amazing in gen5, and still is very good and hasn't really slowed down much since then, not just their high stats alone.
@@matthewkuscienko4616 I said that they have quite good coverage. Most of them have a good secondary typing, but often leaves them with nasty 4x weaknesses. Their stats are usually high enough where their coverage moves do a good deal of damage. If they had the stats of most grass or bugs I'm saying that their coverage would likely move from 2 shots to 3 shots. I still had them on the upper half cause of their reputation and the need to create a type to counter them. But as of this gen with Steel being so prominent with it's natural resistances and the fairy type being so popular, I feel Dragon is in the right spot as a type. Not necessarily how great the individual mons are.
@@ReplayValueMusic In Pre-gen 6 Steel had a hard time countering Dragon cuz Dragons usually packed Fire/Ground Coverage they were only able to beat them if they were locked into Outrage or harshly dropped their special attack after a Draco Meteor

Agree mostly but Umbreon is extremely durable. My Umbreons have taken fighting type moves from mega lucarios with an attack buff and still living. No focus sash

@@inebu-inebulis Oh shut, water type isn't weak to bug type, you big dummy. It's water typing isn't relevant at all to why greninja is destroyed by bug, in fact, bug is actually neutral to water. You could hypothetically make greninja pure dark and still die to bug buzz. The reason why greninja dies to bug buzz is in fact, because of its dark typing, and a relatively bad defense stats. If you say that it's because of water typing that greninja dies of thunderbolt then yeah, I'd agree, because water is weak to electric. But if you say it's greninja's dark typing which is why it dies of thunderbolt, then I would heavily disagree, because electric is, in fact, neutral to dark

Fairy got good representation due to being introduced so late into the series and as a result they needed to throw it on Pokémon from previous generations in order to fill out its roster.

EnderLord In some myths fairy’s are shown to be more superior than bugs and love to play tricks on them.
EX: People believed that fireflies are regular flies enchanted by fairies to light up so they can easily be killed.
And ghost resists it because bugs can barely see glass, so how would they be able to focus all their power on something that can turn transparent easily.
Finally, bug is super effective to psychic type because bugs commonly cause fear, and fear interferes with the deep focus to use psychic powers.
EnderLord it’s a game. It doesn’t have to make sense. It’s to balance the game. In the “real world”, which would be the anime or manga, these “types” are not taken too seriously.

Umbreon does hit hard though. My umbreons casually either ok Pokemon or at least drop them to half. Then you have Umbreons surprising durability
@@svartrbrisingr6141 Well I don't know how, considering both his offenses are 65 and 60. The only major damage you can do with umbreon is with confusion and residual damage, but that's the opposite of hitting hard.
@@M4x_P0w3r I know his stats are low but get him wearing black glasses and using dark pulse and as long as his IV's were very much into special attack he hits hard. Not as hard as some but harder then his stats say he should.

That could explain why Dragon and Dark dont do anything (or much) to them, since they’re destined to defeat evil.
The reason why they’re weak to Steel? Most fairies egotistically think that iron is a basic element.

Fighting is underrated, it gets stab for moves with great type coverage. Fighting types also often learn moves of a vast amount of types.
Fighting is also a really strong type overall; the number of moves they have that have 100 or more base power is a little bit absurd, to be honest.

I just recently started to play through 3 3DS difficulty hacks, after taking a 4 year pokemon break, and find myself with bug pokemon on all 3 teams lol. STAB First Impression and 80 damage Leech Life are winning me games.
I think when the modders made these hacks, they took the advantages of Steel/Psychic/Fairy into account and gave tons of pokemon moves that are effective vs them; while leaving li'l ol' bug pokemon a chance to shine.

Same goes to rock and if one defense sucks thst pokemon connot be used defensively as it will fail same goes to snorlax and chansey superb special defenses but so what if theyre weak to fighting and fighting is mostly physical. This is what is called overrating. Not seeing huge problems like that just because its good in a single thing.

You know what the worst part about Ice is? There's pretty much no point in ever using a pure Ice type since pretty much all Water types can learn Ice Beam and Blizzard.

Water is a better type than Dragon, Dragon is weak to Ice the most used offensive type. This is also why Palkia is so good

Ice has been my absolute favorite type ever since my first time finally finishing the Elite 4 when I was around 11 years old.
I was stuck on Lance, for _hours_ literally spent day after day trying to beat this bastard.... pokemon was brand new, I didn't have a guide book, of course there was no internet and I had no idea how to smack down his Dragonite....
When I finally figured out Ice beam on my Cloyster killed it in 2 hits, AND it was super effective!!!!

Here are a couple changes I’d make:
I’d take steel’s resistance to bug&psychic and give it to the rock type. I’d have the ice type resist water and flying. I’d have the bug type resist dark and poison. I’d change fairy’s bug resist to a grass resist, and I would have grass resist fairy as well.
I like the ideas, but I'm pretty sure poison is effective on bugs.

18: Ice: Ice is a really good type offensively, but the reason why its so horrible is because of the fact it only has one resistance to itself, making it impossible to switch in to anything, having good offense doesn't matter if you can't switch in to anything.
17: Bug: Its weak to a lot of common types and they have very low base stat totals, but they do have good resistances, if bug were to be paired with another type, it could be extremely strong, like Scizor, which is bug steel, only giving it a 4x weakness to fire while having no other weaknesses and having a lot of resistances, however on its own its just meh.
16: Rock: Rock types have amazing defense, but they have a LOT of weaknesses, which really hinders them in the long run, switching into moves is really hard for a lot of rock types because of how many weaknesses they have, and often times they are paired with ground types, making them 4x weak to Water and Grass, which is NOT good. However the base defense of rock types is phenomenal and it resists normal, which is a nice thing to have in general.
15: Grass: Just like Rock, they have a massive amount of weaknesses, however grass types can be good because of the fact that they can hit water for super effective, one of the most common types in the game. Even then, most water types have ice moves, which grass types are weak to. Although what saves this type is moves like leech seed and strength sap, Grass types have a lot of good utility with these moves that give them a huge edge.
14: Normal: Normal is good at hitting things for neutral, however normal mainly struggles from just being, well, normal. It hits nothing for super effective and it has one weakness and one ghost immunity, the ghost immunity is the main thing putting it above all of the other types.
13: Poison: Poison has its upsides and downsides, its kind of just a meh typing. Toxic is a godly status condition, and being a poison type, you can't miss it, which makes it even better. Toxic is the main thing carrying this type, however it is also super effective against fairy, which is really useful considering how prominent fairies are, but it mainly falls because steel is IMMUNE to it, and steel is a really popular type, so this in turn makes poison really mehish, because on most teams poison types won't do much considering they don't hit many things for super effective.
12: Psychic: Psychic god nerfed hard man, it has weaknesses to bug, dark, and ghost. Bite and Crunch are both extremely common, which cripples a lot of psychic types. And on top of that, Dark is IMMUNE to psychic, which also makes them even more easy to counter, and common types like steel can easily tank psychic moves. It doesn't have many resistances either, and although hitting fighting for super effective is nice, fairy can also hit fighting for super effective, so why use psychic?
11: Flying: Flying is a great type, it can hit quite a lot of things for super effective and although the weaknesses can turn into nasty 4x resistances, it has an immunity to ground, and moves like earthquake and earth power are quite common on a lot of pokemon, although the ground immunity is what caries it, being weak to electric and rock, some of the most common types isn't good.
10: Dark: The dark typing is an amazing type, it has a lot of amazing moves like knock off and taunt, and it also has a good chart. Its immune to phychic, which although psychic is a meh typing, an immunity is an immunity. Its weak to fighting and fairy, which although both are prominent types, it has an immunity to psychic while also having some of the best moves in the game.
9: Electric: This typing is amazing, it only has ONE WEAKNESS and it hits Water and Flying for super effective, 2 of the most common types in the game, theres not much to say for this type.
8: Fairy: Fairy is an amazing type, don't get me wrong. But there is a problem, steel resists and hits it for super effective, and steel is a super popular typing, although fairy hitting fighting, dark, and dragon for super effective is amazing, its weaknesses are not ideal. And fire also resists it, and fire is a pretty common type, stab fairy type moves and it hitting all of those types for super effective is good but the weaknesses are just not ideal.
7: Dragon: Dragon type mons have monstrous stats, but they are for sure overrated. Dragon types only hit dragon types for super effective, which means they suck offensively, however they are only weak to themselves, fairies, and ice types, and ice types are rarely used, so that leaves dragon with a very specific set of weaknesses, and plus, dragon is also resistant to the original elemental types, which is AMAZING, especially resisting water and fire. However the main downfall of dragons are their defensive capabilities.
6: Ghost: Ghost is amazing, it has 2 immunities, one to normal, and another to fighting, both great immunities to have, and its also resistance to bug and poison, which aren't the best types, but resistances are resistances. They also have good special moves like shadow ball, and like dark types, they have good utility, like destiny bond, trick, etc. Ghost types are overall really solid.
5: Fighting: Fighting mons are great, they have amazing setup potential with moves like bulk up. They also tie with the most supereffective hits in the game with ground, and it also hits steel for super effective, which is amazing to have considering how prominent steel is. Its only downfall is its weak to fairy, another prominent type, but other than that, this type is pretty broken.
4: Fire: This type has so many resistances, and while having those resistances, it hits a good amount of types for super effective, resisting fairy and hitting steel for super effective is amazing, this type can counter a lot of prominent types, its only downfall is its weaknesses to common types.
3: Ground: This type is busted, it ties with most super effective hits with fighting, and it has an immunity and plentifull resistances, and it also has an IMMUNITY to electric, which is godlike, its amazing offensively and defensively.
2: Water: Most common type in the game, it hits a lot of types for super effective and has amazing coverage while also having great defenses, I can't really think of anything that water isn't good at.
1: Steel: Do I even need to explain? They beat out fairies, they resist half of the game, and they're bulky asf.

All in all almost pretty spot on. The only one I think was too high was the dark type by a bit but I understand why you put it there.

Bug has extremely good resistances like ground and fighting, with amazing attackers like vivillion, volcarona, vikavolt, genesect, pheremosa, buzzwole, heracross, scizor, crustle, ninjask, butterfree, frosmoth, centiskorch, orbeetle, durant, and even shedinja. I will state though that bug is never a good type on its own but I run a mono bug team and you can’t even compete with how many wins I get. Ice has NO RESISTANCES except itself and oodles of weaknesses plus sticky web and leech life which are always wonderful coverage

Give resistant to dark psychic
Ghost and ice
Give offensive advantage again electric and ice
Give imunity to being paralys sleep and confuse
