On high alpine tours, walking on firn or ice on glaciers requires special walking techniques. Walking with crampons and an ice axe is something that has to be learned. As a general rule, you should avoid using crampons wherever possible to save energy and minimize the risk of injury in the event of a fall. However, when the firn is very hard or has thawed to leave no snow cover but just bare ice, crampons are essential.

This is a really excellent video on snow techniques using boots only. The majority of videos I've seen are using crampons. The downhill part is especially useful. Thank you for making this.
