Most gigging horn players I know consider Tower of Power's horns and the Jerry Hey horns (worked with EWF, Seawind, Michael Jackson, Toto, George Benson, and dozens of others) to be the gods of all horn sections. They're the horn players' horn players.
Thanks for this. Most are new to me [which is no surprise]. As a Woodstock-era chick my fave is Sly and the Family Stone but that is all about sentiment and nothing else.
The Memphis Horns probably recorded more hit singles than any others. I was blown away by B, S, & T when they first came out, I loved Chicago's tunes (who REALLY brought horns to the forefront), and James Brown was the Master, but for my money, it's TOWER OF POWER, all the way. I saw them live in San Francisco many years ago, and they blew me right out of my shoes. When they were playing, I looked over at my trumpet player for his opinion, and just saw his jaw hanging open. It was an experience.
Okay, I expected Kool and the Gang, the JBs, Earth, Wind, and Fire, and I can even see putting BT Express in there, but to leave out Tower of Power or Chicago is crazy. You could even put the Ohio Players and KC and the Sunshine Band (I know people think of disco with them, but they were actually a R & B band). Good list, but I would replace some of your choices, just my humble opinion.
The horn section of Delaney and Bonnie, the mad dogs and englishmen horns, the horn section from the last waltz plus of course all the cats james Brown put together..
Your number 2 is Earth Wind & Fire. Do you mean both The Phenix Horns and The Earth Wind & Fire horns? Because those are different musicians. In the clips you showed both horn sections
my top 10 1.chicago 2.earth,wind and fire 3. blood, sweat and tears the 60`s band 4. kool and the gang 5.ohio players 6. kc and the sunshine band 7.ides of march 8.commodors 9.parliment 10.herp albert and the tijuana brass
Never even heard of Pigbag. But that sample you had on there was pretty bad. Especially the solo. Sounded like a novice trumpeter. You totally missed the ball by not adding the most tightest, funkiest brass section EVER. Tower of Power.
How can you miss Tower of Power and Seawind
How in the hell , they not have Chicago? Player player.
Some very good choices here but not including Tower of Power makes the list null & void!
Your choices are spot on!! One often overlooked band is Confunkshun's horns from the late '70's & 80's.
Alfred Boseman Thank You! :-)
Every song is better with a horn section

Mandrill Ten Wheel Drive ,Blood Sweat & Tears ,Chicago ,If,Cold Blood , Ohio Players .Steely Dan used Breckers all great happy ðays

Tower of Power! Chicago!
Beautiful ! Thanks for posting.
I like the very last thing that we hear on this video…
“Kool and the gang,
gonna do their thAng” !!
Saw them live Derby England back in the'70 's .Otha Nash,Spike Mikens Brilliant happy days
Tower of Power reigns supreme
I have to agree on the #1. Open Sesame is killer. We play (try to play) that in my band. Not an easy tune.

Kid Creole's horn section was 10 years among best ,powerfull trio
You trippin if you put kool and the gang horn section above the Phoenix horns, and no tower of power???
Another oversight would be Prince's horn section, Hornheads. They have albums with just 2 saxes, 2 trumpets, 1 trombone and they're the real deal.
The horn section of Delaney and Bonnie, the mad dogs and englishmen horns, the horn section from the last waltz plus of course all the cats james Brown put together..
lol! You forgot the actual number one horn section. The Tower Of Power! TOP!

Great
Where's Tower of Power? Great list, and you're missing some great. Perhaps do a top twenty list. Thanks.
Loughnane, Pankow and Paradizier or Chicago. And their Bee Gees contributions.
Not to include the band “Chicago “ in a list of greatest horn sections is….
almost criminal !!
TOWER OF POWER WAAAAAAATTTT!!!
OH YEA. Check out The Smokin Section
No Tower of Power ???? C'mon !!!
Good choices but, really...?
No Chicago?
No Ohio Players?
REALLY?
T.O.P. #1 always!
my top 10 1.chicago 2.earth,wind and fire 3. blood, sweat and tears the 60`s band 4. kool and the gang 5.ohio players 6. kc and the sunshine band 7.ides of march 8.commodors 9.parliment 10.herp albert and the tijuana brass
Confunkshun too.
Top 2 got to be phoenix horns and Tower of Power
WHAT No Tower of Power.
Wow not taking nothing from the other bands but damn tower of power been around for almost sixty years
Hmmm.... where is Tower of Power? Have You not heard any of their records? 🤔
Any list that the Tower of Power isnt on is bogus brother 🤔
No AWB !?!?
Ur crazy if u put pfunk horns that low
What? No Chicago?
Don't understand your list. When did 2 horns become a line? Your top 3 are proper lines.
...and Tower of Power & Average White Band?
KC and the sunshine band!!!!????
You’re good but you’re missing sooooo much
First of all, the saxophone is not in the brass family
Never even heard of Pigbag. But that sample you had on there was pretty bad. Especially the solo. Sounded like a novice trumpeter.
You totally missed the ball by not adding the most tightest, funkiest brass section EVER. Tower of Power.
Not having the Tower of Power horn section totally screws your authenticity!! Nobody should ever take you serious!! JOKE!!!!!!!
This is a joke right???!!!
Well, who are you, and why do I need to care about your list....not impressed at all.
Worthless list without ToP.
This dude has absolutely no credibility!!
