you want sad? the number of gigs I've done, orchestea pits, functions, even some tv stuff, and there's almost always someone comes over and says "oh wow, you guys are really playing" 💔
Now that's what I call AMAZING!!! Live musicians add that extra special vibe to a song. Can't wait to here this song when it's released!!! "Touch The World" F.L. Freeman, Audio Engineer/ Mixer 111 Entertainment LLC
Harvey your enthusiastic response to the the horn playback near the end of the video is Priceless. It is one of the main reasons I'm learning to play this horn. That Jerry Hey/ EWF type horn riff sent you flying out of your seat! This video brought me out of my depressed state of mind this morning. Thank you!
I love the BTS of this. I also love seeing these badass horn players do their thing. And when it comes to sick session horns, take Jerry Hey and Greg Adams of TOP. Both of these guys look like they could be bankers or school teachers instead of some of the baddest horn leaders on the planet.
Harvey, Really do Appreciate it!!! This is school. I can't tell you how many little things I've Picked up from you & your crew from watching these vids. Preciate ya!
0:21 - Mason Jr. says that today in the R&B scene you don't see session players anymore, especially in the caliber of Jerry Hey and company. ProTools replaced all of them, sad but true. Also, him being the son of the legendary jazz drummer Harvey Mason, he knows exactly what he's talking about. Liked very much of this.
Dan Higgins overdubbed his horn part before. These sessions usually double all the parts (record the 1st tpt part twice, 2nd tpt part twice, etc) with the sax player switching horns for his “double”. Gives that smooth and polished pop/R&B sound.
Jerry hey is a very interesting guy a horn section of Arrangements such as some of the songs on Michael Jackson's Thriller Phil Collins and others etc.
Anyone know what the trumpet mic is? Looks like an SDC with some sort of suspension mount/ring? Maybe tube? Can't see a PSU but it could be out of shot.
Never ever get up in the engineer's space like that band leader does. We don't need your hand on the screen and we don't need you in our personal space. We know where whatever you're talking about is. Just tell us what you want moved, cut, or replaced.
How the heck do you get the true trumpet sound recorded? I can never get it to sound like a real trumpet. Aggravating. I guess that's why you leave it to the professionals.
Ribbon for trumpet? I'm afraid I'd kill that mic, even though they can handle high SPLs. I thought my SM57 would do the trick, but I always sound like I'm playing in a box.
Hey, look at the Royer R 121 - this is my favourite as a trombone player, and my favourite for trumpet as an engineer. this gets some nice "jazz" sound (or reggae, ..) for high note, latin, pop - i would still go for the TLM170 sm57 is the nicest thing on earth..for live (play with proximity effect etc.)
Bill Reichenbach Jr on trombone. MONSTER!
Jerry Hey is truly the Gold Standard!
What's sad is that most people have no idea who Jerry Hey is or the the sheer volume and quality of his work.
He probably likes it that way🤔...At least the industry knows he kicks ass😎

I keep coming back to this. Gary's sound man...
Now that's what I call AMAZING!!!

OMG.. Jerry Hey ! That guy has worked with EVERYBODY and you can tell his music and horn section when you hear it.
Meet Lincoln Olivetti... he worked for all brasilian singers between 1978-1985 , he's awesome, the best for me!

Man, I haven’t watched an underdogs YT vid in legit like a decade. Love seeing dope studio sessions! Thanks for posting
As a trumpet/Flugel player, thank you so much!!!
Tight….. amazing arranger , amazing horn section.
Harvey Mason and the Underdogs. Greatest production team ever.
OMG!! This is awesome!! That horn section is bonkers!!
They are also the team who make Toto's "Rosanna" horn parts awesome...
This entire track is such a banger too. Jerry Hey is the best to ever do it!
Jerry hey horns are awesome! So many great artists and albums! Like Toto so in demand in the days gone by!
Esto Suena increible, y es una excelente muestra de lo que en personal me mueve.. Exito desde Puerto Vallarta Mexico

Awesome! That's the real deal. Luv it!
Nice! Those horn players are tight. Sounds really nice!
Oh man ... more please!!
The song is You Want It by Mary J. Blige. It is not available on iTunes but I have found a version on RUclips.
Jerry Hey!! Advanced Level
Jerry Hey the best horn arranger, troppo bravo
Horn section is nuts!!! And I hear Bari sax but don’t see it in the video lolol
I freaking lost it at 2:08. Killer.
HM, thanks for posting - loving it!
The guy operating the DAW is wearing an IU shirt. I was a pioneer there. One of the first student engineers at the MAC.
The engineer in the red IU shirt is Jerry's son Andrew Hey, BTW...

Jerry hey is the best horn arr king 👍😍
Sick tight!!
The best! What else can one say?
Jerry Hey Badass Horn Arranger.
Harvey Mason: SUPER HYPE!
Jerry and friends: next.
That sounded like some of that "Workin day and night horn stuff..
Same guys playing and arranging...
THE BEST!!! HI-FROM ISRAEL!!!
Does anyone know of someone like Jerry Hey, with his style sound that I could hire for my projects ? I reached out to Jerry, he's retired :(
Try tom walsh or lois dodeswell
Dan Fornero (he’s the bald trumpet player in this section)
Wally Minko is a Hey-compatible composer/arranger.

School 'em Harvey!!!! Seawind in the house!!! Made MJ's tracks healthy!!!
I'm confused. When they start playing at 1:09 your hear a bari sax, but the guy is playing a tenor.
Tim Wolf lol maybe he's just playing the low notes....
A tenor sax can't play that low, plus, I know what a bari sounds like. :)

Fantastic!!! that is THE way it's done!!!!!
what it the title of the track, and the album? it is out yet?
It’s a song by Mary j Blige called you want this from her my life II album
Awesome! A real legend. However, my absolute favorite horn arranger is Emilio Castillo (Tower of Power).
...but it was Greg Adams who wrote all those old classic ToP charts. ;) Castillo is an awesome bandleader though...
Thanks
Is this number out already? This arrangement is AMAZING!
Jerry the legend :)

What SONG is this FOR??!!!
How the heck do you get the true trumpet sound recorded? I can never get it to sound like a real trumpet. Aggravating. I guess that's why you leave it to the professionals.
Ribbon microphones!
yeah or TLM170 neumann - great trumpet sound if you want it more "sharp" like that. and it can handle the high volume from 10cm :-) very well
Ribbon for trumpet? I'm afraid I'd kill that mic, even though they can handle high SPLs. I thought my SM57 would do the trick, but I always sound like I'm playing in a box.
All that old Mancini and Sinatra stuff with Gozzo was recorded on RCA ribbons. Doesn't get more "real trumpet" than that!
Hey, look at the Royer R 121 - this is my favourite as a trombone player, and my favourite for trumpet as an engineer. this gets some nice "jazz" sound (or reggae, ..) for high note, latin, pop - i would still go for the TLM170
