    Thank you everyone for watching this video and for all of the kind comments and constructive advice. I just want to address one concern... the music in the background. As many people have suggested to me, this video would be better than it is if the music were either quieter, or gone entirely. I actually agree. This video would be a stronger production if the music were quieter (or completely gone) in several spots. This was a very early attempt of mine to create an arranging tutorial. I had just purchased my first "real" camera. All in all I think the video is a good effort... but my recent productions are WAY more polished. And the music is quieter in the intro and conclusion. AND the middle of the videos are usually music-free. Unfortunately, there is not good way for me to redo the audio for this video.
    If you were about to leave a comment suggesting that I turn down that background music. I've heard it loud and clear.... almost as loud as that darn music in the background!

      Hey mate. I very useful trick mixing engineers use for music/dialogue is to have a gate in the music channel and have the side chain input from that gate coming from your vox channel. That way whenever you speak the gate ducks out the music. It’s a pretty elegant way of doing it and that means you don’t have to spend hrs doing volume automation.

    Pretty much everywhere we can find people talking about voicings, drops, spreads, ranges.. But this is the first time I get to see somone talking about orchestration, how to distribute the notes within the horns, in a idiomatic manner. These are some real powerful tools. Tks very much!!!

    The idea of objectionable parallels is to create rich counterpoint with a small number of real parts. The idea is that objectionable parallels are a waste of your voices. This is absolutely true on an organ, the instrument of choice for working out vocal harmonies. If you only have 2 or 3 horns, you might want to try this even in a jazz context for a fuller sound. When you have a big band, however, it wouldn't make much sense to have four real parts that form a complete harmony and then distribute them out to the players. Rather, big band scoring typically relies on counterpoint between opposing groups, which do not have much if any contrapuntal interest inside of them; the interest comes from the groups' interaction, and the rhythm section makes sure it keeps swinging, which forgives more sins than you might imagine.

    That was the clearest exposition on getting a classic big band sound I have heard yet. I have subscribed. I have a request if it's not too much. Could you talk about how to give parts to different sections of the band to make an actual chart out of a melody if that makes sense.

      @@PandemoniumBigBand here is a better phrasing. What are the parts of a prototypical big band chart. It seems there are so many elements to a chart that are unique to the genre that don't occur in a pop song. I guess the question is about how form in big band chart differs from typical so g form
      So how do you lay out and plan a typical chart? Thank you

    I just asked myself, the 4th bar is a F#•7 ?
    Because I dont understand why we have Eb C A F#
    Thank you !!

    • @PandemoniumBigBand

      The 4th bar is Eb dim7 (it says that in the piano staff). Diminished 7 chords are built by stacking minor 3rds… and there are only 3 of them!

    For the full ensemble plan of doublings, I fear my trumpets are so low (melody in the range of concert C4-C5) that the trombones will sound muddy doubled an octave below. And the melodic peak is a little too high to bump the trumpets up an octave. I wonder what the practical limitations section ranges are for this doubling approach.

    • @PandemoniumBigBand
      @PandemoniumBigBand  8 месяцев назад +1

      When your trumpet melody is so low, you should use a different orchestration technique. This method for full ensemble tutti orchestration works best when the lead trumpet melody is in the top half of the treble staff.
