Thank you everyone for watching this video and for all of the kind comments and constructive advice. I just want to address one concern... the music in the background. As many people have suggested to me, this video would be better than it is if the music were either quieter, or gone entirely. I actually agree. This video would be a stronger production if the music were quieter (or completely gone) in several spots. This was a very early attempt of mine to create an arranging tutorial. I had just purchased my first "real" camera. All in all I think the video is a good effort... but my recent productions are WAY more polished. And the music is quieter in the intro and conclusion. AND the middle of the videos are usually music-free. Unfortunately, there is not good way for me to redo the audio for this video. If you were about to leave a comment suggesting that I turn down that background music. I've heard it loud and clear.... almost as loud as that darn music in the background!
Hey mate. I very useful trick mixing engineers use for music/dialogue is to have a gate in the music channel and have the side chain input from that gate coming from your vox channel. That way whenever you speak the gate ducks out the music. It’s a pretty elegant way of doing it and that means you don’t have to spend hrs doing volume automation.
THIS IS EXACTLY THE VIDEO I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR!!!!! IVE WANTED TO WRITE BIG BAND FOR YEARS, AND I'VE FINALLY FOUND WHAT IM LOOKING FOR!!! When I heard the trumpets play for the first time, I legitimately cheered in my seat and clapped out of joy.

The idea of objectionable parallels is to create rich counterpoint with a small number of real parts. The idea is that objectionable parallels are a waste of your voices. This is absolutely true on an organ, the instrument of choice for working out vocal harmonies. If you only have 2 or 3 horns, you might want to try this even in a jazz context for a fuller sound. When you have a big band, however, it wouldn't make much sense to have four real parts that form a complete harmony and then distribute them out to the players. Rather, big band scoring typically relies on counterpoint between opposing groups, which do not have much if any contrapuntal interest inside of them; the interest comes from the groups' interaction, and the rhythm section makes sure it keeps swinging, which forgives more sins than you might imagine.
Nice, I just explored your channel and fount it very cool and useful since I'm sax-player and I'm recording horn sections by myself. Thank you for sharing these valuable knowledges!
wow very helpful tutorial. As a guitar player myself, I’m pretty fluent with music theory but not with how a big band horn section should sound. Thanks for giving me inspiration on how to write horns! Love from China. ❤

Thanks so much for this information. I really appreciate it. You should think on creating a jazz composition course soon. I'll be the first student 👨🎓
Hi, you said that if the melody is on the root the second trumpet would be either on the six or 13 however when you were on the third measure where the chord is Dm7 the second beat melody was D (root) but the second trumpet you used a fifth (it was neither the 6th nor the 13th)
3:40 Do you mean leave out the root in the 2nd voice? There's no other way to arrange the chords otherwise so I presume this only applies to the 2nd voice

Nice! A great example of solid harmony without unnecessarily complicating things. I'll enjoy watching other harmony/voicing -related videos from you. Take care!
@@PandemoniumBigBand There is a topic I'm interested in, for my own selfish reasons. That is, your thoughts on how many instruments to use at one time, in various circumstances. As a young arranger, I often wrote more parts than necessary, especially when transcribing something from tape, only to find that when I saw the band live, there were fewer instruments in use.
5:27 I wish I could convince my classically trained music theory professor that jazz is beautiful too... If I showed him this awesome video he would probably fail me and kick me out of his class lol
@@PandemoniumBigBand I hope you're right, everyone has gotta be open to new things in order to truly grow and enjoy music... This video really opened up my eyes on big band writing! Thanks so much for your amazing tutorials!!
Hi.....excelent channel! congratulations.............could you tell us about mixing the big band in a song?, when producing a song in the studio.....how you pan left and right saxes, trombones, and trumpets? what´s recomended.....thank you!
These tutorials for big band writing are fantastic! What "secrets" might you share for tutti voicing of seven horns as in a little big band(A,T,B -2 trp. - 2 trbn.)? Thanks for all your work in passing on your expertise!
My newest video “tessitura”, is a good start to explaining how I tackle smaller section orchestration. The most important thing is to be aware of your instrument ranges AND how the instruments behave in various partials.
That was the clearest exposition on getting a classic big band sound I have heard yet. I have subscribed. I have a request if it's not too much. Could you talk about how to give parts to different sections of the band to make an actual chart out of a melody if that makes sense.
Thank you so much for the feedback! I am not sure exactly what you are asking about. Maybe you can reword your question... I think there is a good, juicy topic in there.
@@PandemoniumBigBand here is a better phrasing. What are the parts of a prototypical big band chart. It seems there are so many elements to a chart that are unique to the genre that don't occur in a pop song. I guess the question is about how form in big band chart differs from typical so g form So how do you lay out and plan a typical chart? Thank you
It's so amazing! Could you please, one day go, slowly in showing how sounds each melody note harmonized on 4 trumpets? all my congratulations! I'm from France.
Close Voicing, pt. 1 Summary all of the harmonies within one octave major: major 6, major 6 / 9, major 7, major 9, major 13 minor: minor 6, minor 7, minor 9, minor 11 (no9) dominant: dominant 7, dominant 9, dominant 13 Rules 1. Leave at least a minor 3rd between the top voices 2. Leave out the root (unless the top voice is playing the 3rd / second voice plays the root) 3. If melody is playing the root, put 2nd voice on the 6th (13th) or 11th or 9th Cheating 1. Copy four trumpet parts in trombone staves and drop down an octave 2. Copy trombone parts into Alto 1-Tenor 2 3. Give Bari. Sax the roots
Thank you so much for your work and pedagogy ! I just asked myself, the 4th bar is a F#•7 ? Because I dont understand why we have Eb C A F# Thank you !!
Then I encourage you to jam out instead!... On my earlier lessons, the music is a bit too loud. Hopefully I've gotten better at this over the past few months.
For the full ensemble plan of doublings, I fear my trumpets are so low (melody in the range of concert C4-C5) that the trombones will sound muddy doubled an octave below. And the melodic peak is a little too high to bump the trumpets up an octave. I wonder what the practical limitations section ranges are for this doubling approach.
When your trumpet melody is so low, you should use a different orchestration technique. This method for full ensemble tutti orchestration works best when the lead trumpet melody is in the top half of the treble staff.
Thank you everyone for watching this video and for all of the kind comments and constructive advice. I just want to address one concern... the music in the background. Nice! A great example of solid harmony without unnecessarily complicating things. I'll enjoy watching other harmony/voicing -related videos from you. Take care!
Thanks Mike! I already announced the next topic (harmonizing non-chord tones)... let me know if you have any requests.
Thanks SO much!
5:27 I wish I could convince my classically trained music theory professor that jazz is beautiful too... If I showed him this awesome video he would probably fail me and kick me out of his class lol
I’m sure he wouldn’t. Different music is orchestrated in different ways.
@@PandemoniumBigBand I hope you're right, everyone has gotta be open to new things in order to truly grow and enjoy music...
This video really opened up my eyes on big band writing! Thanks so much for your amazing tutorials!!
Ace stuff, there seems to be limited information on this subject on youtube. Glad I found your channel.
More to come! I’m glad you like the tutorials
@@PandemoniumBigBand great stuff, I look forward to the next one 👍
Hi.....excelent channel! congratulations.............could you tell us about mixing the big band in a song?, when producing a song in the studio.....how you pan left and right saxes, trombones, and trumpets? what´s recomended.....thank you!
To the point. Excellent!
I loved your video! Crystal clear explanation!
Thank you so much.
All put together-- Sweet! Thanks!
Great tutorial, 🙏
MORE LOVELIES VIDEOS!
Thank you!
effective. thanks
I guess the question is about how form in big band chart differs from typical so g form
So how do you lay out and plan a typical chart? Thank you
@@jlrinc1420 Thats is a great topic. I'll give it some thought. Look out for it soon!
It's so amazing! Could you please, one day go, slowly in showing how sounds each melody note harmonized on 4 trumpets? all my congratulations! I'm from France.
Thank you Mike!
Great Videos... thanks .... great info
Excellent video, clear and to the point
Close Voicing, pt. 1 Summary
all of the harmonies within one octave
major: major 6, major 6 / 9, major 7, major 9, major 13
minor: minor 6, minor 7, minor 9, minor 11 (no9)
dominant: dominant 7, dominant 9, dominant 13
Rules
1. Leave at least a minor 3rd between the top voices
2. Leave out the root (unless the top voice is playing the 3rd / second voice plays the root)
3. If melody is playing the root, put 2nd voice on the 6th (13th) or 11th or 9th
Cheating
1. Copy four trumpet parts in trombone staves and drop down an octave
2. Copy trombone parts into Alto 1-Tenor 2
3. Give Bari. Sax the roots
Very nice! Do you have a formula/guide/rules for voicing 3 horns (jazz) Trumpet, Sax, Bone.
Of course! I'll put that on my short-list for future video topics.
@@PandemoniumBigBand Thank you, looking forward to it !
A practical explanation with a good pedagogical approach, thanks again!
You are very welcome! Welcome to the channel!
What instrument library were you using? Sounds great
Thank you. I recorded real instruments.
Thank you so much for your work and pedagogy !
I just asked myself, the 4th bar is a F#•7 ?
Because I dont understand why we have Eb C A F#
Thank you !!
The 4th bar is Eb dim7 (it says that in the piano staff). Diminished 7 chords are built by stacking minor 3rds… and there are only 3 of them!
Man, thank you very much!
The music in the background is so good during the harmonizing of the trumpets that I find it hard to concentrate.
Then I encourage you to jam out instead!... On my earlier lessons, the music is a bit too loud. Hopefully I've gotten better at this over the past few months.
thanks so much for this lesson.
Have subbed!
you said that we have to leave out the root .. but in the fifth mesure at the last noir you putted the root in the third voice .. can you explain?.
very nice !
Just wow
You are a God! Thanks 3000 🙏
Good video
thank you !

@@PandemoniumBigBand Thank you for clarifying the ranges, Elliott!
