This sky replacement feature implementation is genius in my opinion. Adobe could have followed a similar sky replacement methodology to the likes of Luminar but the approach used in Photoshop is vastly superior. Giving us access to all of the individual layers and masks created during the replacement is extremely powerful. Well done Adobe! 👍

No doubt a powerful tool. A big issue I see, many forget the direction of the light in the main subject. Temperature is important, but the direction of light needs to match if reality is your goal.

Thanks for this more in depth tutorial. I tried my own sky and it didn't work. I now know why because I didn't know about the save for web step.I also didn't know about the putting all layers into a smart object which allows Camera Raw editing. I have been using Photoshop since Photoshop 3,not CS3 but 3 ,and I am still learning. My background is 40 years working at the National Geographic Society preparing images for publication, and now being retired for 14 years working on my own images.

    Hi Colin.
I watched your video to try to learn how to select additional areas of an image to the Sky Replacement tool's automatic selection.
I took a photo of a derelict, rusty old train engine on a grey, cloudy day. I wanted to replace that grey sky with a blue one, with a few puffy white clouds. The Sky Replacement tool automatically selected the complex areas above the train, but missed the windows in the cab. I tried to add the windows in the train engine's cab using the magnetic lasso tool, but the Sky Replacement tool did not also replace the sky in the windows, just in the selection that it had made. I ended up filling my additional selections with the paint bucket, using blue from the new sky that I had sampled with the eye dropper tool.
I know very little about working in PhotoShop with layers, so much of what you quickly explained in your video was way beyond my level of expertise.

Nice possibilities and nice work for sure. Only problem I see with 'your sky' selection is the direction of the light and shadow as it falls on the LA. If you look at the light and shadow direction in the original shot, the sun is coming from behind and over your right shoulder and the shadows are falling appropriately. However, with your sky replacement the sun...and/or light source is directly ahead to the right sandwiched between the two building. Therefore the side of the city facing us would be in full shadow...if 'your sky' replacement 'source' correct. It's a technical and perhaps small detail but one I would see as objectionable.

Great video, only thing I am missing is how you would defocus the sky for those images shot at low dof. In Luminar for example they have the sky defocus option. I assume the way round this would be to add some Gaussian blur to the sky mask?
