Better Than the Sky Replacement Tool - Photoshop 2021

The new Sky Replacement Tool in Photoshop is pretty awesome and does a wonderful job with tricky sky replacements. But, Adobe added an even better tool into Photoshop 2021. Yes, even better than the Sky Replacement Tool!
Personally, I don't find myself replacing skies as often as I would need the Sky Replacement Tool. I do, however, make a lot of selections in my photos, and having the ability to make a sky selection opens incredible doors for landscape post-production!

Great work as usual and thanks for sharing your expertise! For some of my images I will be using the Sky Replacement that "need" a sky replacement :) . However replacing the sky will not address white balance issues or color adjustments that may be needed in the foreground. I have images of Israel and Jordan that even with white balance corrected, the colors that I saw will still not appear as they did to my eye at the time of capture. Now we have both tools thanks to your sharing. Thank you again!

Man I love you so much right now! lol I was using the Background Erase tool to change my skies (yup, I do it quite often - unless I am using a boring sky as negative space) but I hated it because: 1) It's a destructive method; 2) It's not accurate, since if the sky had some white areas (for example), that tool got rid of parts that I wanted to save, like parts of buildings; 3) If the sky had different shades of blue, you had to select each one of them keeping the Tolerance low to avoid getting rid of parts of the image; 4) It's a round tool!!! And how can you be accurate with a round tool?! So my method was: duplicate the layer, select the parts I wanted to save, refine selection, mask the selection, go on the previous layer, get rid of the sky, go back on the other layer and recuperate the parts I cancelled with the Background Erase tool, pixel by pixel in many cases. Now, thanks to this video, you just saved me a ton of time! I could make you a statue just for this! lol

I've been doing sky replacements for many years in my professional work, so I was kind of disappointed by the limited usability and practicality of the sky replacement tool. There are some nice skies in the library, but Photoshop centers them in the image rather than raise the horizon point of the replacement sky to match that of the photo's horizon line. The fade tool works a bit, but I find myself literally raising the new sky and tweaking the perspective to match the lens perspective of the image. Then there's the masking issue. It doesn't really create a good mask for tall objects like towers and trees. Ironic, since Photoshop is typically good at content aware stuff like this. So I create my own mask anyway and make layer style adjustments, which I've been doing for years.
Bottom line is I was really hoping for a true fractal AI engine that could realistically render clouds and lighting similar to what Bryce has been doing with it's landscape software for twenty years. What we got however is a pretty toy which might appeal to novice or first time users, but to experienced artists and retouchers, it's just a toy. The sky library is nice, but it could use dozens of more royalty free images.

I unfortunately lost the skys that came with PS 2021. Do you have any idea where I can download them from? Also where do I set the default location for skys?. The strange thing is the original skys are still in the Sky Replacement dialog box but PS apparently can't find the sky files and gives me an error. I have even uninstalled PS and reinstalled it. But still the system gives me an error saying it can't find the skies.

That is very strange. I'm not entirely sure. When I go into that folder, I don't see them there.

@@f64Academy The fix was to delete all the skies from PS 2021. Then close PS and then reopen PS. All the missing skies returned to PS

Could this be used to make selections for exposure blending easier?

@@f64Academy that's so cool. Sometimes find it hard to get an exact selection for blends that km happy with. Thanks Blake.

So I am guessing these videos are designed for the more advanced as the average user does not use key commands. This platform is hard enough to use then you ad having to literally learn another language, ie key commands on top of trying to figure out how to be skilled at photoshop. Why don't these tutorials give you the path rather then keystroke shortcuts which no one knows except for some pro? Then there is the concept of how close are we getting to just doing AI and photography skills are no longer a factor. I mean if I can take a bad photo and make it amazing in photoshop does that make me a good photographer or just good at creating what is essentially a human version of an AI image? Yea I think photography in a traditional sense is on the way out. Even Ansel Adam's manipulated his photos but at least they were real and not photoshopped. We are going way beyond dodging and burning and even my better half says she no longer knows if a photograph is real anymore. I want to be a good photographer but I cant compete with AI and people editing photos in photo shop to make a lackluster shot great.

Being a good photographer starts with accepting that you are an artist first, and an artist will use any tool necessary to make good art, period. These are tools, Ansel had his too, and for his time, he was "Photoshopping" his images to the extent he could. Open your mind and your photos will come to life. There is a lot more to good art and photography than just the camera. Photoshop IS the BEST digital darkroom we have.

I'll be the sole contrarian here by stating my position that I am against these kinds of AI tools to alter what we saw when we took the photo. Live with the sky you had or come back another day.

For sure, but you can use the select sky here which is much more powerful in my opinion.

Dean, Not always an option. Its a tool you can choose to use or not. I prefer to not have arbitrary limits on my creative vision.
