- The legendary John Lennon mural in Pacific Beach was destroyed with spray paint last week and the vandal’s actions were caught on camera.
“It was an iconic PB landmark,” said Leslie Dufour.
The longtime Pacific Beach resident says the mural, painted in 2006, was based on a famous photograph of Lennon. And it quickly made the neighborhood come together.

They use sticks that you can attach spray cans on, or the top a van or pick up truck on the sidewalk. It's a local who vandalized the building who knows the area. That probably took all of 20-30 minutes to tag.

Some people are just assholes. I had a 4,500 square foot Coin and Collectible shop in Phoenix. Even with security system, cameras recording 24/7, metal gates across windows I still felt it was just a matter of time. Every coin shop owner I know has been robbed at least once. Best was when Mike Green of Phoenix Coin Shop had an attempted armed robbery. Got to see video even the cops and news didn't. Couple followed Mike into shop at opening and the man drew a handgun and pointed it at him. Mike then drew his Glock 9mm and shot the guy in the hip. His faithful sidekick tried to flee but door was shut. Mike kicked the assailants gun away then kicked him in the face. Held them both st gunpoint till PD arrived. They both got time. I ran my neighborhood and nobody even thought about trying. Slept on the couch and watched Seinfeld at night. Cooked on a grill outback. Would Wali right through groups of homeless shooting up and they all addressed me by sir. Dogs smell fear. They become full of fear when they know you have none.

Where was the outrage when Lee circle in New Orleans was vandalized? Whether or not we agree with the subject of a mural or monument does not matter. Ownership is what matters. You do not get to destroy another persons property because you don’t like or agree with the property, EVEN if it’s in public view. It’s a criminal offense, and until ALL of the vandals who have been identified through video or photos destroying these monuments are held accountable for their actions, THIS vandal who destroyed this mural of John Lennon cannot be held accountable for his actions. Period.

Kinda sad the only vandalized historical murals making the news are of pop culture figures. I love The Beatles, but there are so many beautiful and historical murals that have been vandalized in my neighborhood that will never see the light of day again, they were landmarks of the neighborhood and have been left tagged and graffitied for years.

If it doesn’t belong to YOU, and you paint on it, your a vandal, PERIOD. Just because you don’t like John Lennon, or Robert E. Lee, does NOT give you the right to paint over their monument or mural, NO MATTER YOUR FEELINGS, unless the monument or mural BELONGS TO YOU! Until EVERY KNOWN VANDAL who has defaced a monument is held accountable for his or her crimes, the vandal who painted THIS MURAL cannot be held accountable for THIS crime. An eye for an eye.
50,000 a year? How about make him pay it off by being in a work crew removing city Graffiti on streets and hwys? Post a billboard with his face and contact info and when paid off billboard comes down? Also has to work as a janitor in a HS or nursing home too! I think crime would drop!! Lol

Pacific Beach is a cesspool of drinking, hookups, homeless, and overpriced real estate that the majority of San Diegans avoid. It's about time it gets some art that matches the reality of the situation.

As a graffiti artist: we’re exactly that. We don’t ruin anyone else’s art. Either get permission from the land owner or do it underground where no one will be bothered by it. Period.
