Returning To Marawi After ISIS (HBO)

- At the 2017 Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) this Monday, trade talks were at the top of the agenda, but Trump also took the opportunity to congratulate Duterte for his strong stance on terror, and the liberation of the city of Marawi last month.
Militants aligned with ISIS took hold of the city in May and what was supposed to be a two week battle turned into a five month long siege, where the Philippine military (assisted by U.S. intelligence, weapons and funding of 13.6 million dollars) struggled to take down the highly equipped and skilled opposition.
But, the battle is far from over. This is a Muslim majority region, prone to sectarian violence and anti-government sentiment for close to a decade. Now the state will have to re-build trust within a shaken and fragile community, as residents cautiously return to the outskirts of the city.
VICE News was there at the height of the battle in June and returned to count the cost of war.

Why are you putting subtitles when they are speaking in English. I could clearly understand what they are saying. It feels racist to me
"We're not battling people, we are fighting ideologies. You cannot kill ideology, you can only render it irrelevant"
- 1st Lt. Villarosa
That's some wise words soldier, you deserve high respect 🙌
Matalino. Future general.
Yes ideology can't kill it will spread everywhere and the only thing to stop ideology is education
If this is smart to you, then you're a fool.
Filipino is the most optimistic people in the world, they are still smiling despite of big problem. Rise again Marawi. Greeting from Japan.
Hakamuzo Ichura ありがとう!

totally agree, my lovely wife is Visayan
@Alexie Sergie Rios mali pa spelling mo bro
I love Japan 🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵 :)
I had absolutely no idea this was going on in the Philippines. The ISIS propaganda has spread far & wide. What the soldier said “you can not kill an ideology only render it irrelevant” is such a great point. I hope to see ISIS ideologies be irrelevant very soon.
Bailey Energy these guys have actually existed for decades. I think they just recently pledged for the ISIS because they both share sick ideology. Philippine soldiers have been fighting them for a very long time like I said. I grew up in Davao city and those fuckers bombed the city of Davao countless of times. Heck, I almost become a victim when those sick bastards bombed the city bus terminal.
So sorry to hear that brother. Glad you're well & may these sick bastards pay for what they have done.
Dont forget that muslims have lived in these lands long before christians.
yet the poorest in these lands are dominated by them.
Bailey Energy two words, it wont, it will just go on and on, maybe in time will innovate but it will not be erased🤔
I really like the way he explained the ideological battle
That 1st Lt Villarosa is a genius..the statement have a deep meaning..well done soldier for protecting your country..salute from Malaysia

His English is extremely great!
They have to be able to speak English before graduation.
looking at his patches, he seems to be one of the units that trains with US SEALS
its a 2nd language there
They strictly have to pushed us to learn english at school. English subject to us is equivalent to mathematics.
I was raised in a Family that always uses English at home. They know 2 local dialects of the country but I get to learn english a lot more from them at a very young age. It kinda helps, yes. But when you speak english at school or in some other public place, people would either look at you as some weird mofo, or just laugh at you.
that army guy spoke really well!!!
Exactly..because he came from phil military Academy..a premiere military school here in philippines
Thats the result of using english in your daily lives as mean language even at home.and you were taught in an early age.we filipinos know how to understand and speak the language.only that,we seldom used esp. at home because our family members will probably taunt and tease of being an american.
Its because for us Filipinos, its really our 2nd language. From our history, we've been colonized by the Americans, and from there up to now, its been integrated to our school curriculum starting from a young age.
@boob marley If philipini english is very abysmal, how would you describe other nationalities especially in mid east? Also, why do Koreans go to Philippines just to learn English? Why not your country?
Even poor in philippines can speak basic english
That is one smart soldier.
You need them smart nowadays ^^

They keep sending this poor girl to every hell hole on earth...but she does a good job.

Yeah I'm not saying most of the world is in imminent danger, I'm highlighting how extreme ideologies can take hold in poorer nations
So sad the city was devastated. The officer spoke very well.
It made me in tears when the kid saw his laptop that has been broken i wish the government can replace some of there things that has been destroyed

Lt. Villarosa is a smart guy.
smiling while watching house been Destroyed is the most filipino thing.
That Lieutenant was very smart
Filipinos people are complex people. You need to be a Filipino to understand us. Same it goes to other Nationalities. But in the end, we strive, we smile and we dream. Its good to have foreigners who tries to help, understand and love us. May Philippines prosper after all of these trials!!! MABUHAY KABAYAN!!!
It's so strange with Vice that they both have amazing journalism like this, but also have pieces where they get mad at white vegans for not segregating the food they eat by "racial origin"

Villarosa appears to be highly insightful and intelligent.
the boy and his father is a Christians. for sure.. and he said he wll never comeback in marawi again ..good decision
You're the only one who came up with that conclusion and I wanna know why you think they're Christians. Because you'll never know. Marawi majority of ideologies are Muslims. It's an Islamic city ffs
@@MarkyPaligs he probably thinks that way cuz the accent of a Muslim when speaking bisaya is obvious. But then again, if he's a Christian, maute would have killed him already. He must have known some passage from Qur'an.

@@horyshet5810 nah, more of what dr1p said because this uprising has been going on for decades in the Philippines. Only Duterte ended it because he learned that these local terrorists became too dangerous to allow more into our country when they declared alliance with ISIS, hence the declaration of martial law in Mindanao.
Very brave woman in you miss isobel yeong
0:33 how can he still laugh when his home got destroyed?
Literally Filipino.
Because We Filipino Are A Very Strong And Postitive Minded People, Just Because We Lost Our Homes It Doesn't Mean That We Can't Be Happy Again. And God Is Always With Us.
Sometimes we laugh because we're having trouble accepting what we see we're in shock. So we distance ourselves from the fear or pain of the circumstance by laughing it off.
It is what it is and we laugh it off.

That 1st lt.. Was really a product of pma... Well educated and trained
The government did a really great job in fighting over ISIS in marawi. The war in syria wasn't like this. Yes they killed the leader of ISIS and declared to have won the war but I don't think so. They just created the next generation of monsters. More deadly. Because they engraved more hate to the people. In marawi it's different. The soldiers said so themselves, they have fought the ideology not the people. They respect their religion and now the government is helping them to rehabilitate. They have housing and road projects, they will also have new facilities like schools and hospitals. Thanks to this government admin who has a very great heart for all the filipinos.
Bruh I can't believe they still had to put subs for Mary(the woman organising the burying) and Lt. Villarosa and not for the british lady, they were understandable
It’s so sad that many died.
Mostly terrorist.
This is why we should not allowed terrorist or go to War.
Capt Villarosa is a The Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) Awardee for 2020.
If the citizens of this town take the guns and fight isis Force's,they never have to leave they property etc,but always they do what the government say...is time We the people fight the enemy.
Luis Hernandez the irony is most of the people in marawi are symphatizers.. they taste their own medicins.

This is why the philipinos need to pull their troops from afganistan....oh wait.
This! For whoever thinks ISIS and Al'Qaeda etc. has a grievance with the West because of Foreign policy, Israel, or whatnot, this is a slap across the face - The Jihadis want to destroy all freedom and all culture that is not Islamic no matter what country we are talking about. China, Russia, Philippines, Myanmar, Niger, Somalia, and of course the whole West all have a serious problem and war of ideas with Islam, not because of what these countries do, but because what these countries stand for. They stand for un islamic worldview.
