    Update Sept 3, 2022: In the Tesla 2022.24.6 software update I believe it disabled radar in my April 2021 Model Y as well as Auto-High Beam is turned on at night when Autopilot is on with no way to disable it. So far it seemed like it wasn't working great and would randomly turn high beams on/off, but no way to disable in settings.
    Update August 24, 2022: As pointed out by a viewer Tesla has apparently now started to turn off radar in cars equipped with it for the first time and updating them to Tesla vision only via software. This was not the case at the time of filming this video. It's unclear if this is going to include doing this on all Tesla's that are already radar equipped or if they're just testing a small segment, but let's hope it doesn't cause those cars to also have issues with phantom braking.
    What's odd about this development is it hasn't been widely reported and there's nothing official on Tesla's website. Tesla only mentions transitioning new cars to Tesla Vision only. While there's plenty of articles from 2021 reporting Tesla would no longer include radar hardware in new cars, there was never a mention of turning it off in cars already equipped with it. The only article I can find was posted on August 24, 2022 although the viewer mentioned it in early August.

Looking forward to more camping and travel videos. I plan on doing a US tour soon from home in SW Colorado to as many music venues and historic sites as I can. Hey Steve - You're welcome and that's so cool and sounds like a great trip. I'm jealous 😀
      I love outdoor amphitheaters and have also wanted to do that with a few friends. Just set out for a month or so and hit all the great summer concerts.
      When I was younger I went to a lot of concerts in Wisconsin at Alpine Valley Amphitheater where I saw Van Halen 3 times as well as Rush a couple times.
      Also saw some concerts outside in Chula Vista California just south of San Diego at the Amphitheater there.
      The one I still haven't made it to, but always wanted to is Red Rocks Amphitheater outside of Denver not far from you apparently. Always had the desire to see Of Monsters and Men there (if you're familiar with the band). Red Rocks looks amazing!
      Well, I'm glad you're enjoying your Model Y and would love to see you out on the road 😀 Safe travels on your trip and always feel free to ask any questions if you run into something you're not sure about.

    How & where does the Jackery battery plug to the Tesla? Smart idea taking the air fryer & placing everything in the bear box.

    • @bryanhauer
      @bryanhauer  2 года назад +1

      I plug it into the 12v plug in the drivers side rear cargo area. I just leave it plugged in and let the car constantly top it off. In a Tesla the 12v battery is constantly topped off by the main battery. and the Jackery 1500 is 1.5 kWh of storage so the 75 kWh Tesla main battery has no problem keeping it topped off. I'll occasionally just use the 2x100w solar panels when camping in sunny areas to charge up the Jackery as well. Cooking with a hot plate or air fryer is the biggest hog of electricity, but I've never run the Jackery all the way down even when cooking for an hour using multiple devices. I've loved it so far and having an EV that can just silently run it all day is a game changer.

    Hello there. I would like to ask the starlink. Is that the starlink roam you have? What kind of service do you have? Mobile regional, mobile global or mobile priority??? Also, i saw before your video with starlink how you install and prepare it but having a hard time finding it again. Can you please send the link? Thanks again.

    • @bryanhauer
      @bryanhauer  Год назад +1

      Hi Rita - It's Starlink Roam. Make sure you have Roam selected at the top of the website before entering your address. It's Mobile Regional you likely want. Should be around $150/mo and you can pause service when you're not traveling. For instance I'm in MN right now for most of the summer and have it paused, but when I get ready to head back out on the road in a month or two I'll just unpause it.
      Here's the link to the review video I did when I set mine up, but just a warning... Starlink's service and naming of services has changed quite a few times since this video so you won't need to do a lot of the things I did in this video and instead just follow the directions they send you and it's super easy to setup. ruclips.net/video/leb9Txu2728/видео.html

    Phantom braking. My first experience with it was on I-70 heading west through Kansas and it was pretty unnerving because it was so unpredictable. Oddly enough, we had no issues on I-70 through Missouri. I think there’s a book out there called What’s the matter with Kansas. Maybe they can add this nugget to their addendum. Pretty sure our Y was built in August of 2021, so it’s definitely vision only. Hoping that they can solve the problem through better software because I doubt they’re going to revert back to the previous technology they’ve worked so hard to eliminate. Anyway, another great video! I seem to learn something new from all your videos. Thanks!

We are not waiting for the 400 to 500 mile range vehicles. However, increased range would be ideal when you’re traveling for long periods of time like we will be when heading out west this fall. Hoping that we can fit a small refrigerator behind the passenger seat and not use the ice chests.

    Great video...thanks! In the video you mention you currently use the Tesmat system for sleeping but in the links below you link to the EXPED mattress. I'm concerned about our heads drooping without more support for our heads above the footwell between the top of the back seats and the back of the front seats. Can you expand a bit on how you use the Tesmat to solve that problem? It sounds like you've also had to deal with the same issue. And give me a link for the Tesmat so I can give you credit and you can get your affiliate commission.

    • @bryanhauer
      @bryanhauer  Год назад

      Thanks Robert! This is an old video so no longer use the TESMAT and actually wouldn't recommend it at all anymore. It's inferior compared to the EXPED or others on the market. I've never had to worry about my head drooping down with my EXPED and even put my elbows up there sometimes and because of your weight on the rest of the mattress it doesn't droop at all. Nice thing about the EXPED is that it's memory foam with honeycomb air pockets so you get the comfort of a quality memory foam that rolls up into a small size to fit in the sub-trunk or even frunk. I would recommend getting the additional widget pump as it makes it super easy and is ready to go in about 3 minutes. It's so much more comfortable than the TESMAT and the company behind it is so much better. In fact, I'm not even sure TESMAT is in business anymore. Many reports of that and they've not returned any emails to me or customers. I highly recommend giving EXPED a try 👍🏻

The average loss for a gas car is 15-20% when adding a cargo box as well so while it is slightly more, it isn't probably felt as bad as many gas SUV's can easily get over 400 miles on a tank. Phantom Breaking depends on the roads. It's a MASSIVE problem and makes autopilot unusable across highways and especially at night. It's dangerous it's so bad.

    • @bryanhauer
      @bryanhauer  2 года назад +1

      It also depends on the car. Saying it’s unusable in general isn’t accurate. Although it may be for you. For instance I’ve driven 35k miles in just over a year and had it happen 2 or 3 times early on and never once since. While others have experienced it many times a drive. I’m not trying to minimize the frustration for those that do see the issue as Tesla absolutely needs to make it perform better & more consistently. I know if I experienced it all the time I’d probably get rid of the car. Luckily I don’t and it’s worked great and so far has been my favorite feature.

    • @bryanhauer
      @bryanhauer  2 года назад +2

      Not sure I understand what that has to do with software or ownership. So you’d feel better if you had to go to a dealership to have them download it for you instead of over the air? Sorry. Not sure I follow.
      Refrigerators get over the air updates and you still own them. Same with phones.
      Technology won’t stop so while the shelf life may be more limited due to technological advances, I’m not interested in owning my software/hardware for decades. I suppose I could see your point if you wanted to buy it and keep it for decades, but 99% of people don’t so that. They buy their car, make payments and drive it for 5-7 years before upgrading. Also rarely do people pay cash for cars or their house(most can’t afford to & those that can wouldn’t as it’s a terrible use of capital) for that matter so barely anyone actually has ownership… they lease to own from a bank. If you stop paying they take your car or house.
      Not jumping on you either, just not quite sure I understand what you mean 😀

      @@zerokool-2058 Ahhh got it. Yep, for sure different. Technology is moving so fast that I think the days of owning a classic car in the sense that in 40 years from now will people be buying 2022 Tesla's as classic cars?? Probably not as they won't be officially supported any longer. As we've seen over the last decade company's like Apple, Google and Microsoft have shortened the time a device is supported and is considered legacy. That poses a problem for people looking to own cars for long periods of time so I can see your point there, but honestly... I think those days are just over. Don't get me wrong... I'd love a '68 Mustang so I get what you mean, but I do agree the shelf life will most likely be less. I do however think they'll be able to retrofit them with upgraded software and hardware. They've made it so the computer chips can easily be upgraded by Tesla. They already do a bit of that.
      My guess is they'll still support them for 20+ years or so (you can still drive and charge the original Tesla Roadster & that was 15 years ago). I bet a 3rd party ecosystem sprouts up as well that will provide some type of support.

      @@zerokool-2058 For sure. I like that they send constant updates every month to make the car better, more efficient. It's similar to when Apple or Google release a new operating system for their phones and we all get a new look or new features. For instance the 2021 Holiday Update from Tesla included things like being able to view the cars cameras remotely or the blind spots now show the camera from that side when you turn the blinker on. Those weren't there the day before, but with an over the air update, everyone can now use it.
      I honestly do think they design them so they not only last quite a while, but so the computers in them can be easily swapped out and the rest of the car remains a normal car albeit with way less parts that a gas car.
      Current Tesla batteries are under warranty for around 8 years and 120k miles and are said to last between 20-35 years. I suppose someone who wants to collect them could have the battery packs replaced in 25 years similar to having an engine replaced and then have the computer chips upgraded.
      Not to mention the life of the brakes due to little usage as I mentioned in the video.
      If you're looking to buy one soon and hold onto it for a decade or so, I think you'll be just fine. One question I often think about is more around what the resale value will be once the market is flooded with EV's and since technology is moving so fast, what will that look like for selling or trading in a 10 year old EV. That might end up looking more like the phone market where 10 year old cars are obsolete. Because of their price I imagine it will probably be more like 15-20 years, but the shelf life will surely be less.
      Thank you for the original comment. It's an interesting one to think about.

    Are you actually thinking of releasing your own sun shades, or was that just a joke?

      @@bryanhauer I bought the evannex heat shields before I found your channel, so I have the silver and white ones unfortunately. Love the idea of matte black on one side. Mine seem like they could be a newer model of yours though. They came with the suction cups attached so I can’t reverse mine, and mine have straps to roll them up for storage. Definitely wouldn’t recommend storing them that way though, because it makes it difficult for them to keep a flat shape against the window. Maybe that’s one thing to keep in mind as a negative to storing them rolled up when you’re thinking about storage for yours? If you need someone to test them out, I camp a lot in my Model y, so just let me know and I’ll be happy to help!

      @@JoshHolme Thank you for the insight! Super helpful and I'll definitely reach out and send you some for testing once we get closer to that this summer. Also agree about rolling them up not being good. Mind do have those straps too, but I never use them. I'd prefer some type of light neoprene sleeve. Definitely don't need the suction cups except for the roof, but even those I'm trying to figure out a better solution.
