Im not ex-military, so cleaning my AR-15 seemed like a daunting task after shooting it. This video was great, made field stripping and cleaning a breeze. Thanks very much!
Seems to hit all the key points. Not quite as thorough as a few of the other AR15 videos I've seen, but then again it it also almost 1/5 the length of some of those out there. A very good quick reference for those out there just getting on board with the AR platform!
@biglu2 when you get an M4 it has the telescoping stock, if your AR has an A2 stock you can replace it with an aftermarket M4 style stock, check Midway USA or Brownells for the parts.
@modex20 The rod he's using is either composite or aluminum. It won't harm the chrome-lined barrel. The solvent is likely Hoppes #9 or an equivalent solvent.
@lordcrusade Got it a little backwards there. AR-15 was Eugene Stoner's original designation under armalite. The U.S. military then designated it the m16, and later the m4.
@P0PZILLA The AR-15 has a floating pin and can be cycled and dry fired indefinitely without fear of damage. The AR-C7 may be different, although I didn't think so.
@wickedrebel512 I use Rem oil to clean surfaces, and some bore cleaner also from Remington, and I use Hoppe's lubricating oil for..... lubrication. I'm new to ARs also, lol but I hope I helped
@cobrachoppergirl in the military, we are trained to keep our equipment in clean and serviceable condition and that means keeping our weapons clean. during cleaning, we're inspecting for worn/broken parts in need of replacement. because of that, it wouldn't matter if we were issued an AR or AK platform weapon; it would still get a high level care. also, also, a fair % of our military in vietnam were draftees with no desire to be fighting a war vs our highly skilled all volunteer force of today.
I'm new to the AR-15 but have done research on it, read the Army manual, etc. gone to ar15.com, and I doubt there is a better, more concise video showing cleaning and reassembly than this one. I don't have any idea why this video is being criticized. This guy does in a little over 6 minutes the essentials which take 30 minutes or more with other video presenters. You guys are overly critical, and if you review the Army manual, you will see that much of it is followed.
Of course not, they're just biased on whose method of cleaning is the best. Get the rifle as clean as you can and enjoy it people... it's like little kids bickering about how each other tie their shoes differently. Shooting USA is highly renowned and wouldn't give bad info in their shows.
I watch videos of Stalingrad, and know, in war you're not going to have any kind of clean workshop or time to mess about cleaning your gun. You need it to work like broom or a sledgehammer so you can beat it to death and keep pouring rounds and fire through it and it keeps on working. I read that most hits against the enemy in the jungles of Vietnam were at 100 yards or less and completely random hits from massed fire rather than carefully aimed rifle fire. So kind of a win for the AK-47/74.
@fulsame1 but AR's and M4's are considered the same weapon as over hundreds of different versions of them some fixed stocks some not but as for everything on the weapon its the same and also the US Army constructs the AR's, M4's (which again are the same weapon just civilian / military terms) and M-16's
What chemicals are you using? I just bought an AR and am very new to the scene, can anyone give me some suggestions? I have an AR cleaning kit that I bought at a gun show but I have no idea what chemicals to use, which ones are the best, etc. Any suggestions/help will be greatly appreciated.
@silvermediastudio But then again I dont know. I mean I've seen the AK field striped, and I can do it too. It just seems much easier than this. But like I said before: I would be easier to have it right in front of me. NOTE: I'm not saying the AR15 is a bad rifle.
@Namnarooni Haha I know you had some good points. I love AR's but it's a pain in the ass in my state when you want to build one...no folding or collapsible stocks, Has to be have a barrel over 16 inches..no flash suppressor or threaded barrels and the list goes on. anyway I just read your comment about going to read an army manual as being cocky..but in hindsight it'd be a better idea then listening to this guy..
Secondly... You wanna run a wet patch with solvent down the barrel and let it sit a while before running the brush... And it will take more than 1 brushing... 5 minimum.
He never cleans the carbon off the gas tube or the inside walls of the upper... all sortsa fun stuff builds up in there. A pipe cleaner is best for the gas port on the bolt.
@Chris28456 - Actually, I made those comments to be constructive but you want to see it as trolling... The things I commented on are actual concerns by a good deal of us who have fired AR style platforms all of our lives... Especially the bit about sticking your pinky in the chamber when the bolt is charged... It's downright stupidity... yet this guy is showing the world how to do it....
easy to clean and doesn't have the spring you have to watch out for that the AK does (unless you take the buffer tube out like this video shows, which again is unnecessary for a field strip). The AK isn't hard to clean either, but if you think this is hard then you've obviously never handled either or probably any gun.
This video is kind of odd. You talk about putting oil on several areas that don't need oiled every cleaning (or ever in the case of the dust cover pin, that never really needs lube) yet you don't say anything about lubing the area the bolt contacts the carrier and the four 'rails' that the bolt carrier contacts the upper. Those are some MAJOR areas that you missed! Also for everyone saying this seems so hard and an AK would be a lot easier, have you ever actually seen either? The AR is super
He doesn't lube the rails on the bolt carrier which he does catch in his notes (probably because we noticed it too). Whatever you do, DO NOT use a Q-tip to clean the inside of the gas key. I repeat, DO NOT EVER, NEVER EVER, use a Q-tip to clean out the inside of the gas key. You'll learn the hard way that when the cotton tip comes off the end of that stick and lodges in the gas key. You will then look at the gas key and think to yourself, "oh FiretrUCK"!
@brentfoto There are much better videos out there. The fact that this vid is ONLY 6 minutes is part of the problem. A rookie to the AR15 has no business touching their gun if they are only watching this video. This goes well beyond field stripping, which most users shouldn't be doing. Some of the cleaning tools are wrong (ie an aluminum brush). Stick with AGI's armorer DVD for a thorough look at cleaning and explaining why we do and don't do certain things.
It's not too complicated. I just got an AR-15 and I am taking it apart on the regular. This video is quick, to the point and shows a little further into the process of the takedown than most do. It also shows oil points. Stop whining. Fags.
ugh, I hate when people shove their finger in the chamber, even worse when they teach others to do it. Very unsafe and a horrible idea. Looking is more than enough, there is not going to be some hidden bullet in there that you can't see. Don't stick your finger in there and risk losing it.....
No this is so wrong. If anyone were to actually do this their weapon would be worse off then when they started. Everything he did just loosened the crap inside. He didn't even clean the bolt carrier or even the inside of the bolt. And don't even get me started on the star chamber. Sorry but if you're going to look for help on how to clean an AR-15 look for someone who knows what they are doing.
u guys have no idea of what ur doing with that weapon , ever heard of scrubing the parts clean of all carbon , no I didnt think so , bad function check as well go figure , plus he calls alot of parts incorrectly , if u want to know how to clean this weapon right talk to some one who is or was in the military or read a field manual
Im not ex-military, so cleaning my AR-15 seemed like a daunting task after shooting it. This video was great, made field stripping and cleaning a breeze. Thanks very much!
Funny how a 6 and a half minute video can be so concise, helpful, and effective, than videos that take 10 minutes or longer.
Seems to hit all the key points. Not quite as thorough as a few of the other AR15 videos I've seen, but then again it it also almost 1/5 the length of some of those out there. A very good quick reference for those out there just getting on board with the AR platform!
Thanks for this fantastic video, it's been very helpful in cleaning up my AR.
Wow, the simplest and best video I have seen, has helped a lot!
Very good. Best I've seen and lighted well enough to see what you were doing.
Thank you for your instruction. Very clear and careful explanation.
@biglu2 when you get an M4 it has the telescoping stock, if your AR has an A2 stock you can replace it with an aftermarket M4 style stock, check Midway USA or Brownells for the parts.
Hickok45. Spray with Ballistol, except in the gas tube. It likes to run wet.
@modex20 The rod he's using is either composite or aluminum. It won't harm the chrome-lined barrel. The solvent is likely Hoppes #9 or an equivalent solvent.
I just bought one today. Thanks for the info.
Very good video man. Would you mind providing links to where I can buy the ar-15 cleaning kit and the cleaning solution used. Thank!
@lordcrusade Got it a little backwards there. AR-15 was Eugene Stoner's original designation under armalite. The U.S. military then designated it the m16, and later the m4.
Thank you. Very good tutorial.
@tatetalk Definitely. They're quite straightforward to work on.
Thanks for the great video!
Subscribed.
Fantastic video! Thank you so much!
It looks just like hoppes #9 solvent real good stuff leaves parts shinning
Is it okay to jam the cleaning rod thru the bore like that without any kind of guide?
What was the mixture in your solvent bath?
@P0PZILLA The AR-15 has a floating pin and can be cycled and dry fired indefinitely without fear of damage. The AR-C7 may be different, although I didn't think so.

@himoms1001 AR15 is a semi automatic only version of the M16 and normally doesn't support the use of the m203 unless your barrel is gov profile.
recomendations on a certain type of oil?
great info=well explained=thanks
Good video, but how many people have a vice to put their AR into when they clean it??
great video..

@tatetalk What do you find so confusing? It's 4 pins, about ten parts.
it has the exact same firing mechanism as an m16 thats badass
@fulsame1 but AR's and M4's are considered the same weapon as over hundreds of different versions of them some fixed stocks some not but as for everything on the weapon its the same and also the US Army constructs the AR's, M4's (which again are the same weapon just civilian / military terms) and M-16's

@jbjeter17 thanks for the suggestion bud. Got some ballistol the other day that stuff is amazing!!!
I personally only drop the bolt carrier forward with a snap cap in the chamber.
Wow AR's have sooo many parts its crazy
i´m argentinian. our army use the FAL buut it´s interestig to see how to disarm an ar15
@luisg254 All M16s and M4s are AR-15 style rifles.
As an AR noob other than him not cleaning the bolt carrier or the bolt did he do that bad on cleaning it?
@562davo Try Ballistol. Best stuff i've ever used.
By all means, on the little fiddly pieces, rush right past and make it a wide shot
0:48 why he drop the hammer? Seems unnecessary
Thanks for the video, but you forgot tell the audience to pull out the bolt before reinserting the Firing Pin Retaining Pin. Better luck next time.
Put a patch over the brush and the tight fit will expedite the process.
What about the gas block and gas tube? Is it just me or are we forgetting about the to parts that get the most dirt buildup?
@silvermediastudio But then again I dont know. I mean I've seen the AK field striped, and I can do it too. It just seems much easier than this. But like I said before: I would be easier to have it right in front of me. NOTE: I'm not saying the AR15 is a bad rifle.

This dude is just raw dogging his hands in that solvent
@Namnarooni Please make a video showing the proper way.
does the gas tube ever need to be cleaned
@Chris28456 - Actually, I made those comments to be constructive but you want to see it as trolling... The things I commented on are actual concerns by a good deal of us who have fired AR style platforms all of our lives... i cant get my charging handle back in. help???
@silvermediastudio I don't know, I guess if it were in front of me It would probably be easier to understand.
Seems like many of you dont like this guys cleaning process. Anyone have a link to a real 'expert' cleaning process?
easy to clean and doesn't have the spring you have to watch out for that the AK does (unless you take the buffer tube out like this video shows, which again is unnecessary for a field strip). The AK isn't hard to clean either, but if you think this is hard then you've obviously never handled either or probably any gun.
@Smooov516 AR15 is the civilian name but basically its an M4 in military terms
@himoms1001 - Is your google broken?
Aren't you supposed to wipe off excess oil from the parts that will get hot, before you shoot of course?
This video is kind of odd. You talk about putting oil on several areas that don't need oiled every cleaning (or ever in the case of the dust cover pin, that never really needs lube) yet you don't say anything about lubing the area the bolt contacts the carrier and the four 'rails' that the bolt carrier contacts the upper. @airsoftdude1990 for men? i have 3 ar-15's :/....
From the color of it, it looks like hopp
He doesn't lube the rails on the bolt carrier which he does catch in his notes (probably because we noticed it too). Whatever you do, DO NOT use a Q-tip to clean the inside of the gas key. I repeat, DO NOT EVER, NEVER EVER, use a Q-tip to clean out the inside of the gas key. You'll learn the hard way that when the cotton tip comes off the end of that stick and lodges in the gas key. @iTsStEpHyyyy Good for you, but in general, for men. Because more Men enjoy weaponry than Women. Just as more Women enjoy Martha Stewart than Men.

@TexasWhitetails1
obviously
When are we gonna come up with something with less steps? With ak’s you don’t have to do that.
Don't recommend the physically inspection part - . - might end up loading your pinky in~
Cleaning the AR? Har... Harrr.... don't you know that the AR-15 is a self-cleaning rifle?
Man, I'm way too spoiled by my Ak-47.
It's kinda like a Martha Stewart cooking show, but for men.
most videos are like 5 part 9 minute videos. this one is 6 minutes with a 20 second safety check. chill out brother
si confusing compared to an AK47 or AK74S
@CumminsRescue24 If you have dirt in your gas tube, you've got bigger problems.
mini-14 is like a female mud wrestlers, bitch dont care how dirty she gets, just gonna keep going till her opponent submits.
He didn't even do a functions check.
Yeah... Boys & Girls, It's never a good idea to stick your pinky finger into the chamber with your bolt charged back....
@Chris28456 - Please a standard Army field manual and quit relying on videos like this to hold your hand.
It's not too complicated. I just got an AR-15 and I am taking it apart on the regular.
This video is quick, to the point and shows a little further into the process of the takedown than most do. It also shows oil points.

@airsoftdude1990 wonder if he went to jail aswell.

I'd rather not buy it if I have to do all that
You have to clean ANY gun.. It’s part of owning a firearm
It's become alot simpler since then. U really don't need tools to take it down 😊
Then you probably don't need a gun....
Lmao
No this is so wrong. If anyone were to actually do this their weapon would be worse off then when they started. Everything he did just loosened the crap inside.
