    This is the best car RUclips channel. It's so comfy. No one screaming at me, no 420BLAZEITBRAHH crap, no one shilling some stupid tshirt, no cringe worthy jokes... just direct discussion about cars.

      It's b/c Mr.Metcalfe is one of those rare care journalists like Harris that give out informative automotive information. The others are just playing pretend; or trying to mimic them & just catch up at best.

    • @FrankDBoyce
      @FrankDBoyce 7 лет назад +2

      I agree with both of you guys but I honestly think the main difference is that both Harry and Chris actually go out and drive the cars. Even Shmee you wouldn't really see him ripping around a field like that to actually test the car. No one cares about how much carbon a car has we just want to see how a car performs.

    it sounded like a tractor at the beginning
    the great thing about Harry reviewing a car is his technical knowledge and his fairness.
    he tries an ice covered Hill and it fails,at the point most presenters would roll out the 'its no range rover, up this Hill"
    but no,Harry goes and fetches his range rover,tries and fails the same Hill (and puts it on the film).
    quality review as always.

    • @ericrawson2909

      Bryan Yes, agree, sounds like a tractor, and although I might love a tractor, there is no way I want a car that sounds like this. I much prefer my almost worthless 1998 XJ. V8 petrol that will scream to 6800 rpm. Trouble is the cars I desire are £100k upwards new. Can't justify spending that, and no way would I consider this diesel lump. I also have a 1997 diesel escort van, in a way it's fun to drive as you can keep your right foot to the floor most of the time without being illegal!

    Thats a comprehensive and honest review.
    One thing though: The Levante does NOT directly compete with F-Pace and macan (D-segment) but with the upcoming J-Pace, RangeRover Sport, chayenne and so forth (E-segment).
    A kerb wheight above 2 tons and a 0 to 60 time of 7 sec, with the standard issue 3.0 diesel, are pretty much standard in this class.
    So no wrongdoing of the Maser here...

    I heard that Land Rover where venturing in to the two seater low slung sports car market. Using a modern development of the Lotus Europa with a 6 litre W12 engine based on the Rover K series.! Interestingly the whole rear of the car comes off,and it comes with small seats above each rear wheel, so mechanics can get comfy whilst doing headgaskets repairs. It's even going to have cup holders in the engine bay.happy days.

      @Jimbo8012 7 лет назад +23

      +Liam Beeson-Clune - You're joking surely?! I hate SUV's with a passion but this is actually one of the better ones to look at.
      How can this be the most horrific SUV on the planet when the BMW X6 or the X4 exist?! These 2 abominations are the most hideous car designs ever commissioned barring the 1st gen Fiat Multipla and the Chrysler PT Cruiser.
      It's substantially better to look at than a Range Rover Evoque or any of the other Range Rover products tbh. It looks hundred times nicer in the flesh than a Jaguar F Pace.
      Compared to a Gran Turismo or Ghibli it's not great but compared to some of the above, it's like a super model.

    If I was in the market for an SUV and I had that type of cash to blow, I would go for a Tesla instead.

    The maserati levante is the best car (suv)
    I believe that the 15 inch footwell you are correct and its also a bit tight between the steering wheel and the foot pedals as the center of the chair is the brake paddle rather than the gas paddle
    Instead of discussing the car complicatedly generally i would like to say that is a complete suv in terms of look, stabilization , chassis , safety , offroad , onroad
    Your youtube channel is very discuss full and with less words you have gave to us (the viewers) a complete view of the car you want to describe to us ( the maserati levante )

    I agree Harry a twin turbo would change the car.
    A small turbo to enable free revving from lowdown, then the larger turbo coming in at the higher rev band with the power. I find this combo can give diesel engines a petrol feel. The BMW 123d did this brilliantly giving it big torque with fast revving and impressive performance.

      Manufactures are only moving into the SUV sector because that seems to be what most premium buyers want today. At least this Levante is heavily biased to good on-road performance, the handling really was very good for this type of car.

      These cars are often the only thing that keeps large sportscar makers afloat. Porsche was pretty much saved by the sales success of the Cayenne in 2002-2004.

    • @fundiver198
      @fundiver198 7 лет назад +6

      Think about it this way. Porsche today is an SUV manufacturer, who also make sports cars. And without the SUVs the brand would probably be dead or at least seriously struggling.

    • @joetacchino4470
      @joetacchino4470 7 лет назад +1

      fundiver198 yes, but that's an SUV that drives like a Porsche, and has the build quality and interior of a Porsche. Not a re-badged FCA parts bin special.

    • @fundiver198
      @fundiver198 7 лет назад +4

      +Joe Tacchino You are missing the point. Many people hated the Cayenne, when it came out thinking, that Porsche should never build such a vehicle. But it gave the company profits, which it could use also for improving its sports cars.
      And if Maserati is going to have a future and be able to build great cars, they need sales and profits. Its as simple as that. And globally there is just much more sales in SUVs than in sportscars or high end limousines like the Quattroporte.
      If you dont like the brand and wish for it to have a future, why are you even watching and commenting on this video? If you would rather own a Porsche, then fine, good for you, buy a Porsche. But we are some, who find, that the car world would be a bit boring, if only the german manufacturers were present in the premium segment.

    • @OmgMellophone
      @OmgMellophone 7 лет назад +2

      Yeah just like Jaguar jumped into the game as well. I believe they sold more F-Paces in it's first month of sales than the entire Jaguar line-up. I'm glad Maserati jumped into the SUV market as well... not only does it look beautiful (in my opinion) but it's a smart move on their part... because they know not everyone can afford their higher end cars like the Quattroporte or the GranTurismo.. not that this SUV is exactly cheap ( in the US) but it's better than paying 100k+ for the other models. Honestly once I get my degree and the vehicle I have no completely dies, I will probably look at a Levante,F-Pace, or Cayenne/Macan. All 3 look great in my opinion, the only downside is for the price of a base Levante I could get a maxed out F-Pace.

    I remember the shock and disparaging remarks when Porsche launched the Cayenne but it saved the company and provides the profits to continually evolve the 911.
    Like it or not, SUV's are massive sellers, which shown no sign of losing popularity, hence the likes of Lamborghini and Bentley have even joined the fray.
    I think it's very difficult for a brand solely known for sports cars to launch an SUV which also encompasses the design heritage of the brand without it looking a little awkward in places. Original Cayenne and Bentayga spring to mind and many seem to agree.
    I think the Levante is a good first effort, especially given it starts at £55k here in the UK, so it's competing with the X5, ML, Q7 and XC90. Many manufacturers are reducing the development of diesel engines or even completely removing them, such as Porsche, so you can't blame Maserati for not offering anything better than a 275bhp V6 diesel for those markets that require a diesel option, such as Europe.
    The petrol engines are indeed more in keeping with the brand and they do receive some good reviews compared to the diesel model. The new Trofeo V8 will hopefully take it to another level and give the Levante the halo model it should have had from launch.
    Like all large SUV's, the Levante needs big wheels to offset the large body and raised ride height, and the Levante certainly looks better on 21s and especially so on the 22s of the Trofeo V8.
    Having seen a few in S trim on bigger wheels, the Levante is making much more sense to me.

    Another excellent video Harry. I do like your modern car reviews, but i prefer your old car ones more though. The history of them and styles you just cant have anymore. That said though, ill look forward to your next video, whatever it may be. You have a cool job!

    Great real-world review, Harry. I see a lot of people are abhorred by a diesel SUV wearing a trident badge. I'm trying to be philosophical about it; I recognise the business case for an SUV is too strong for Maserati to ignore. Hopefully it will make the company so much money they can afford to build other cars that do their racing heritage justice. ... still wish it was more of a looker.

    I believe to have read, that the high output(424 bhp) petrol version will be made available in the UK after all.
    I think Maserati should make a version with the 2.0l 4 cyl. GME engine that Alfa uses. With 300 bhp and +400 nm. The Ghibli could also benefit from such an engine.

    I usually stay relatively unbiased with this sort of thing, but if I were to buy a vehicle in this segment, I think the Porsche Macan does a fantastic job and really looks the part. Not to say this doesn't, but for the money, the Porsche just executes better to me. Regardless though, another great review! Thanks Harry!

    I drove an Audi Q7 for a while,and yes it was quick for a big car,but a tad wide on some English roads,hitting all the bumps was an unavoidable option at times. It had every upgrade fancy wider wheels ect,but it tramlined a lot,would also aquaplane at low ish speeds, you where kept busy driving it.but by way of an odd comparison,I'd get in my old Saab900 Classic convertible,that aren't known for their torshional rigidity,but after the Q7 it felt like a go kar,t narrow so you could take a nice line up twisty hillclimbs nice steering and yes it wasn't to fast but you could still get pleasure as you harried it along! The most telling difference though was how separate from your more glamorous passenger in the Q7 you could barely interact over the huge centre consul.yet in the Saab you sit side by side with your partner,and whilst changeing gear there is genuine interactivity.

    I'd buy a Masarati GT Coupe or Convertible in a heartbeat, but a Masarati 4x4? Don't think I could. It's always going to be a Range Rover for me. Nice looking though, and it will sell to the Cheshire school run brigade like the proverbial hot cakes.

    I bet the neighbors are thinking, "there goes that hoonigan Harry drifting his Maserati around the bottom 40 again..." :) I'd like to hear Harry's thoughts on how it compares with a Range Rover Sport, BMW X5 and a few others that fall into the same price point and performance characteristics.

    Great review - so detailed, intelligent and comprehensive. You just don't get this anywhere else in these post-print days. (Supercar Classics is sorely missed.)
    You've probably nailed the conundrum of the design brief for this car: Firstly, it needs to translate the essence and virtues of a Maserati to an SUV (a paradox) that could even be diesel powered (an anathema). Secondly, it needs to be a credible off-roader but still be a sporty Maserati on-road even though 90% of the buyers couldn't care less about either. (They just need lots of logos and a big price tag as they drive it around on shopping trips.)
    That said, I still feel Maserati may want to host a link to your brilliant field test on their website, LOL! (I once did something even more lurid in a mate's 911 Carrera and he complained he got a massive bill for hosing down the mud and grass from all the crevices in the undercarriage. Wonder if the ride height adjusters saved the Levante from a similar problem?)
    Looking forward to finding out if the Stelvio has an 18" footwell and great connectivity....

    It's a nice looking vehicle, not sure the engine options compete with the F Pace though, at least in the UK. Also, glad you still have the old L322!
