Great conversation! Never listened to the podcast before but this movie gets me yapping like crazy. It's sort of what got me into KR in the first place, the hype for this movie (being a big Shin Godzilla fan) got me interested in checking out the franchise to begin with.
And it's very interesting comparing your perspectives, coming from Heisei and Reiwa, as opposed to me starting from the beginning. Stuff like original Hongo being a tormented (and very handsome) man, a second Rider, and the darkness, all of that really surprised me getting into the original. The first 13 episodes are kind of like my Bible; I often joke that I've watched the very first episode more times than Hideaki Anno has.
It actually kinda spoiled me, I didn't vibe with Shin at first because it just felt like NGE with a KR skin. Of course, I've come around on this once I got the very personal take Anno had on the material.
Related to the comments made in the episode: every Aug in this movie (aside from #0) is based on someone from the original 13 episodes. The Chameleon Man is actually from my favorite episode of the '71 show, the two-parter which introduced Shocker's origins.
Which is also the first episode I believe that had Hongo fight with a sword, which blew my mind, I just thought it was the coolest thing ever.
Also I find the comparison to The First/The Next interesting. I watched those for the first time recently, and I agree that The Next is a lot more interesting. I really love when Kamen Rider goes back to its horror roots, I think it's a core part of the story, honestly.
I have a lot more to say but I've already said plenty, so I'll leave it at that for now.
