It's like how you wouldn't say you're 'on Australia' or 'on Hokkaido', because even though they're islands they're just too big to really be 'on'. Nice job with saying 'the' North Island though; soo many foreigners don't pick up on that. *L&P* (short for Lemon & Paeroa, the place it was invented) is an iconic NZ drink beloved by kiwis, just like Pineapple Lumps and Whittaker's chocolate.

That pie is a little piece of NZ history! If you noticed the logo on the wrapper it said 'Georgie pie' which was an iconic NZ fast food chain that sold pies of all flavours, for only $1, back in the 80's. McD's bought them out in the 90's and decided to introduce a pie option a few years ago in honour of the brand.

    • @ALucas73
      @ALucas73 5 лет назад

They should still be $2 or $3 based on the price increases, since the early 90s until now, on cheese (from $5/kg in the 90's to $9/kg today), meat ($6/kg to $18/kg), and flour, but they are over $4 now.

Georgie Pie took out a lot of debt in order to expand throughout the country. They were operating at a profit, but not by much and had close to no cash on hand. Given they were expanding so fast and taking away market share from McD's, McDonalds bought the debt from the lending banks and then foreclosed on the debt, forcing GP out of business. It's an example of the worst characteristics of international corporates.

That Pie is called a "Georgie Pie" which used to be a NZ fast food restaurant back in the 90's that McDonalds bought out. They used to have varieties like mince, steak, minced steak & cheese (the one you got), sweet&sour pork, chicken & vege, sweet apple, and blueberry apple pies. McDonalds brought back some of the Georgie Pies because of demand from kiwis.
They were so popular because of the pastry, and they were only $1 for the small (the one you had), and $2 for the large. So for $5 you could get 4 x steak mince and cheese pies and a small fries. Every kid back in the 90's used to go there after school and they used to do childrens birthday parties as well.

Burgers in NZ were originally made at Burger Bars in the 1960s and they had a large Bun toasted, beef, beetroot, cheese, lettuce, mayo, tomatoe, onion, fried egg ,and Watties tomatoe sauce. Maccas made their version to replica this a few years back when they started selling the Angus grass fed Beef and due to public demand for a Kiwi burger.

Lake Taupo is pronounced 'toe-paw'. Ordinary, everyday beef here in NZ is all grass fed which I think is completely different to the US where you have to search it out - so yes - something to write home about! The huge mountain you mentioned at 10.32 is called Mt Ruapehu and was the location of Mount Doom in Lord of the Rings. Hope you were told that at the time - a sacred mountain to the local Iwi (tribe) and a special place for all of us Tolkein fans.

L&P - refers to Lemon & Paeroa - a town in the Waikato.
for the kiwis here - before there was L&P - there was Lemon & Te Aroha -
Te Aroha was a spa town from 1882, when its hot pools were first
developed by the government, until well into the 20th century. People
suffering from a range of ailments came to Te Aroha to bathe in the
curative waters, and to drink them.

The pie is a "Georgie pie". It was a New Zealand exclusive franchise from the 70s to the late 90s. They were brought out by McDonald's. By popular demand McDonald's brought back, sold the pies again from 2013 for a while and then stopped.
They had a awesome selection as well including desert pies and a $1 menu (which you won't find in NZ currently)
    Also, it's pronounced L&P (L and P)
    Kia ora, awesome video!

8:27 one thing here in nz that most people do with their frozen cokes is to drink the bottom part with all the flavouring and then eat (yes physically chew) the part with less flavouring at the top because thats where a lot of the ice clumps and it just dissolves in your mouth.

If I remember correctly, MacDonald’s brought out a pie franchise in NZ called Georgie Pie, then closed all the outlets throughout the country to give themselves better consumer advantage. In doing so they breached the consumer laws here in New Zealand, so a group of NZ lawyers took McDonalds to court. So to comply with NZ law McDonalds have sell the Georgie pies on their menu. It was a victory for Kiwi’s when an American corporation got put in their place by little old nzer’s.
