    NZ is about quality of life. The trade-off is a high cost of living. I'd still take NZ any day. I've lived in the US and Australia, and I always end up back in NZ. The high cost of living is worth the quality of life. A lot of Kiwis take NZ for granted but it's a lot better than almost any other country in the world.

    When we left Auckland for Sydney a couple of decades years ago, Auckland was dirt cheap compared to the rest of the world. When we left Sydney for London 15 or so years ago, Auckland and Sydney were both still dirt cheap and seen as backwater countries compared to the rest of the world. But now that the NZ and Aus dollar has increased in strength and the increased globalisation of the world, Auckland and Sydney are more expensive to live than most of the world (especially food). I actually find living in London and Europe and most of North America cheaper than Auckland or Sydney. NZ and Aus are now seen as "safe lifestyle resort" style countries.

    • @PeterandYen
      @PeterandYen  6 лет назад +12

      Totally agree with you paws. Many if my friends in America talk about how housing is a lot more affordable in their state compared to Auckland. But at the same time San Fran and NY continue to be much more costly vs even New Zealand. Things have really sky rocketed here over the last few years especially the food and transportation costs. Thanks for the insight 👍😊

    8:15 I remember when I was in NZ for some months I took it for granted to drink from the tap and I was really unsure after the first time because for me it tasted a lot like chlorine. My mates told me it tasted normal and not like chlorine. Maybe its because im spoiled with swiss tap-water. I later learned, the more i went away from Auckland (and probably the other bigger cities) the fresher the water tasted. So if you're used to really fresh water, you should be prepared to the city-water. You can drink it though and you will get used to it pretty fast.
    Upside: When I came back to Switzerland, it was the best thing ever to drink the super-clear swiss water again ;)

    • @PeterandYen

    Aotearoa & Hawai'i are comparable in regards to the cost of living. The only thing is HI is slightly more expensive than NZ overall, except for transportation (public transport, petrol, etc.) and clothing. Food prices are high in HI since most of it has to be shipped from the U.S. mainland. Homes in the Hawaiian suburbs tend to be smaller in living space compared to NZ suburbs since space is limited being on smaller islands than the North Island and South Island. Hawai'i and Aotearoa do share a common Polynesian culture and the nature in both "countries" are breathtakingly beautiful. The price to live in paradise, right? I wouldn't mind living in NZ even if it's for a temporary stay. Thank goodness there is direct flights from HNL to AKL!

Really want to try some of the og poke stores. Good to know how we should be budgeting our money. Sounds like it's gonna overall cost us a bit more than a new Zealand holiday which is all good as you say it's the cost of staying in paradise and in my opinion totally worth every dollar. Looking forward to experiencing some Hawaiian culture 😁❤

    Wow! What a great breakdown, very detailed, and covering all the necessities for living.
    We live in the Bay Area (Sunnyvale, California). We’re about 40 miles south of San Francisco. It is very expensive to live in this area because we’re right in the heart of Silicon Valley. Pay rates are higher here compared to other areas, which helps a little bit, to pay for accommodations 😬.
    People from other areas often called us crazy for living in the Bay Area, because of the cost.
    We also have the best weather in the country, so we pay for that too😰
    Ideally, for renters (like us), you rent from a family owned apartment. Rent is usually cheaper compared to corporate owned properties.
    Hopefully, we can buy a house soon. That’s the ultimate ideal situation 🤞🏽

      We've had a few people comment from the states and it seems some of the more popular cities in America as well as some of the European countries are a lot more expensive than New Zealand. Rent, food and utility prices are the same ish here in Sydney... despite our petrol being a bit cheaper, travelling around is bit expensive if you’re driving cause we have to pay tolls. We also have to pay for 3rd party insurance on top of our rego fees which is like $400 ish for 6months.

    Wonderful video! I live in San Diego and the cost of living is very similar, the main difference is that on top of all the living expenses, we still have to pay for healthcare. So for me, NZ is actually a little bit cheaper. Does NZ have different school districts or do they all operate as one? Here, school districts also determine the price of some homes: better schools, more expensive homes.

    • @PeterandYen

      Regarding the school districts in the big cities it works exactly the same. The better school zones are generally surrounded by higher priced properties.

    See, I'm moving from Ontario, Canada to Auckland New Zealand in October and this is more reasonable than pricing here (currently). The housing, food, gas, utilities, phone bill are all very similar to what it is here, the big difference is the living wage. In Ontario, minimum wage is $15 an hour vs. here its about $21. That alone makes a huge difference!

      Assuming both people work for about 40 hours a week for the whole year. A minimum wage salary will earn you around $35,000 a year before tax. Around $30000-35000 a year before tax on a lower or minimum wage. If you're in a higher wage job you could earn an income six figures. Depends on what jobs you're qualified for, also job experience in the field you apply to. Taxation is according to income brackets. In addition, if you have lots of kids and your income doesn't suffice, the government has a doles system. But there are stringent categories in receiving social security/financial help in NZ. The WINZ body looks after it... (Work and Income NZ ).

Just looking at bread, 2x loaves for $5.50 where as here in the UK I can get the same loaf for £0.59 (or $1.17)! I would really love to come back to NZ to live & bring up my son but I'm not sure I could afford to now. I mean even the average NZ wage is lower than the UK equivalent.

      I reckon Sydney still beats out Auckland on a high cost of living and we'd say Brisbane is probably a little cheaper but that was definitely changing when we left at the end of last year, costs of power/gas/petrol and eating out in the city were definitely going up. Perth was an awesome change from Aucklands costs when we first moved there, but a few years later things like power and water costs were on par. Housing prices in Perth are some of the highest in Australia too.
    But petrol is way more expensive in NZ than the average $1.50/L in Perth. Japan costs about ¥150/L.
    Renting my 2 bedroom apartment with a kitchen and no living room costs ¥45,000 a month just one stop from Osaka.

    Hi Peter...fantastic and helpful video...I had a couple of quick questions and wanted to know if you or anyone else could reply since I will be shifting as a student in a couple of months :)
    1) When it comes to renting, are there accommodations with food included? Like a bed and breakfast/dinner sort of thing?
    2) Just as water is included in the rent amount, is electricity cost also included or is that paid separately to the landlord/lady?
    3) If I am staying an hour away from the University, is traffic usually issue in the mornings (meaning, I would have to leave much earlier) or is it generally smooth?

    • @PeterandYen
      @PeterandYen  5 лет назад +2

      Hi Russell awesome all the best at uni! Answers below.
      1. You can join a homestay option if you're attending primary to high school. You will be looked after by a family who prepare food for you and a room. If you're going university or higher no such lodging exists you'll need to get your own accommodation.
      2. Electricity is something you will need to pay directly to electricity company. Water isn't included if you get a house either only apartments.
      3. Traffic will be a HUGE issue. Better to live near a train station if you're far from the city otherwise it's going to be a very long commute for you. For people living 20km from the city it can take 20 during non peak traffic to get to city. During peak an hour.
      Hope that helps!

    Okay, $600-800 Auckland rent for a 3 bedroom is either an understatement or a really lucky find. its closer towards one-thousand per week on a 3 bedroom house - which is why most people house-share (or 'flat') to split costs up between 3-4 people typically as rent can then be dropped to a more reasonable $250 per week (per person). Still - you can get a whole house to yourself for that money in some parts of Australia. Brisbane and The Gold Coast for example have brand new 3 Bedroom HOUSES that will set you back $350-400. It wouldn't surprise me if statistics found Auckland to be one of the highest income to living discrepancies in the western world.

    • @PeterandYen
      @PeterandYen  5 лет назад +1

      The Auckland rent I've quoted is more of an average rather than focusing just on expensive 3 bedroom places in central Auckland. For example you can get a 3 bedroom place for 500 in flatbush. Where as 600 will get you a decent 3 beddie out south or west. I believe Auckland places 23rd in the world's expensive cities ranks.

    • @mattl1962
      @mattl1962 5 лет назад

      I would assume the world's expensive cities rankings don't list average household income versus average household costs in that equation - which (in theory) would make living in New Zealand be put further up the ranks. I agree with you, and it isn't the most expensive country for property on the world market, given that the NZ dollar isn't really as competitive as the Aussie Dollar, the US Dollar or the UK Pound.

That's our main train and transport hub, it's close to the viaduct too and the wharf if you're planning on catching a ferry anywhere like to Waiheke. Also depends on your budget but anywhere in or around the Viaduct will tend to be expensive as that's the most tourist area.
      You can use this website for public transport planning: at.govt.nz/
      Renting a car is usually the best way to get around Auckland conveniently though but if you prefer buses and trains to get around then staying in the city cbd itself will be good. Queen St is a key shopping street to help you get your bearings too. You'll find restaurants pretty much everywhere along/around britomart, (upper) queen st, lorne st, victoria st, viaduct too.
      Hope that helps somewhat and that you have a wonderful stay in Auckland! 🙂👍

    Well I really like how you went into detail with everything. I can't believe that gas prices are so high over there. I guess it does make sense since you guys are so far away from everything LOL. Your parents was really nice and I think it's very interesting that it is pretty much the same cost to get a townhouse 10 to get an actual house. Thank you so much for the detailed information

      @@AsterCalibur Once you own a home its not so bad. But thats the problem. I am 45 and bought my first home 2015. I simply could not afford the home I have if had waited. @@rickginza Houses are not too bad in smaller areas but like most big cities in the world NZ is also high. Yeah if you got the gear for it alright you still have to pay for petrol in lot of places to go where you like to go unless you live really close by. Yeah meat you can get at the butchers for a little bit less also but meat overall is expensive.

    3000 dollars a month,,, too expensive! I am glad I am living in a small town here in NZ~~ you can easily find a decent flat to share, around 120 dollars a week plus bills might up to 120-150 dollars if you got 2-3 flatmates, and we don't have to pay transportation fees as Massey student here in Palmerston North since its all free to take a bus within the city if you are studying full-time. my bill normally ranging from 1200-1400 a month, so literally half the prize or even lower compare to big city Auckland lol

      Hi Andy thanks for dropping that valuable insight in. No wonder students go outside of Auckland to get their education. $1300 average for living expenses a month is so much more affordable than it would be in Auckland! Makes total sense as you don't really want to start your working career with a massive pile of debt 😅👍

      So are the prices more affordable the farther your from the city, such as housing. Cause it also happens to be a downside if your job is in the city and you live in the outer parts 😬

    Very well presented. Are there property taxes to pay as well as rent? In UK we pay council tax to the local authority. And tax on wages / health care?

    • @PeterandYen
      @PeterandYen  5 лет назад +1

      Hello you only pay property tax here if an owner sells a house as a trade rather than an investment. There are no capital gains on investments. You do need to pay council tax on your property. There is an additional acc tax which covers accident compensation for rehabilitation back to work for kiwis. If you rent there are no additional taxes to pay.

    Hi Peter and Yen, can you give me advice on renting an apartment in Auckland CBD, I will be there on November and I am looking at trademe.co.nz and I don't understand the inclusions in the rent especially the "Hot and cold water included". How much is the cost if tenant will pay for the hot water? Forgive me for my ignorance but in my country we install a heater in each bathroom. I appreciate your immediate response; by the way this is for a single apartment occupant.

    • @PeterandYen
      @PeterandYen  5 лет назад +1

      Hello hello, apartments normally include cold water free. And depending on the apartment hot water you'll need to connect through a hot water vendor or just pay an electricity bill. If you live in a house you need to pay for water which includes fresh and waste water. Then you pay for electricity or gas which will heat the water. A bit confusing but if you rent a place your landlord will be able to help with all that. Expect to pay around 60 to 80 nzd per month for a single person. If they list as hot and cold water included means its bundled in your rent.

    $3000 a month comes out to $36,000 a year. As an US citizen, this seems not too bad. Would you say anyone working a typical job could afford this in NZ or is this only affordable for those with high paying jobs?
