    NZ is about quality of life. The trade-off is a high cost of living. I'd still take NZ any day. I've lived in the US and Australia, and I always end up back in NZ. The high cost of living is worth the quality of life. A lot of Kiwis take NZ for granted but it's a lot better than almost any other country in the world.

    When we left Auckland for Sydney a couple of decades years ago, Auckland was dirt cheap compared to the rest of the world. When we left Sydney for London 15 or so years ago, Auckland and Sydney were both still dirt cheap and seen as backwater countries compared to the rest of the world. But now that the NZ and Aus dollar has increased in strength and the increased globalisation of the world, Auckland and Sydney are more expensive to live than most of the world (especially food). I actually find living in London and Europe and most of North America cheaper than Auckland or Sydney. NZ and Aus are now seen as "safe lifestyle resort" style countries.

      Totally agree with you paws. Many if my friends in America talk about how housing is a lot more affordable in their state compared to Auckland. But at the same time San Fran and NY continue to be much more costly vs even New Zealand. Things have really sky rocketed here over the last few years especially the food and transportation costs. Thanks for the insight 👍😊

    8:15 I remember when I was in NZ for some months I took it for granted to drink from the tap and I was really unsure after the first time because for me it tasted a lot like chlorine. My mates told me it tasted normal and not like chlorine. Maybe its because im spoiled with swiss tap-water. I later learned, the more i went away from Auckland (and probably the other bigger cities) the fresher the water tasted. So if you're used to really fresh water, you should be prepared to the city-water. You can drink it though and you will get used to it pretty fast.
    Upside: When I came back to Switzerland, it was the best thing ever to drink the super-clear swiss water again ;)

    Wow! What a great breakdown, very detailed, and covering all the necessities for living.
    We live in the Bay Area (Sunnyvale, California). We’re about 40 miles south of San Francisco. It is very expensive to live in this area because we’re right in the heart of Silicon Valley. Pay rates are higher here compared to other areas, which helps a little bit, to pay for accommodations 😬.
    People from other areas often called us crazy for living in the Bay Area, because of the cost.
    We also have the best weather in the country, so we pay for that too😰
    Ideally, for renters (like us), you rent from a family owned apartment. Rent is usually cheaper compared to corporate owned properties.
    Hopefully, we can buy a house soon. That’s the ultimate ideal situation 🤞🏽

      We've had a few people comment from the states and it seems some of the more popular cities in America as well as some of the European countries are a lot more expensive than New Zealand. Really interesting findings and you're absolutely right where there are high paying jobs there are high paying costs hahaha 😅

    I lived in the south west of the UK for 3 years and I always thought the UK is the most expensive until I visited New Zealand. I stayed in Auckland for a few months and God I was shocked! Everything is so expensive and sometimes even more than the UK. At least in the UK you can get cheaper food and a few other things if you check carefully. Aotearoa & Hawai'i are comparable in regards to the cost of living. The only thing is HI is slightly more expensive than NZ overall, except for transportation (public transport, petrol, etc.) and clothing. Food prices are high in HI since most of it has to be shipped from the U.S. mainland. Homes in the Hawaiian suburbs tend to be smaller in living space compared to NZ suburbs since space is limited being on smaller islands than the North Island and South Island. Hawai'i and Aotearoa do share a common Polynesian culture and the nature in both "countries" are breathtakingly beautiful. The price to live in paradise, right? I wouldn't mind living in NZ even if it's for a temporary stay. Thank goodness there is direct flights from HNL to AKL!

Looking forward to experiencing some Hawaiian culture 😁❤

      @@PeterandYen, yes, both Paris and Montreal are great, for different reasons. Paris probably is the most beautiful city in the world if your thing is architecture. Also, there's no shortage of things to do there. Montreal's like that, too, only more "small(er) town" in feel. Montreal feels much more like Auckland. But the winter is hard. It's not so much the cold as the snow and the ice. It's really easy to slip and seriously injure yourself if you're not careful, and it's tiring having to be so careful all the time. I'm looking forward to just being in flip flops, even in winter!

But just as a comparison, what I earn here in Auckland is roughly the same as what I would earn in Montreal for the same job, but the average Auckland rent is *double* the average Montreal rent. I really don't know how people on lower incomes survive here. Also, people pay income tax on the first dollar they earn (which isn't the case with Quebec or Federal Canadian income tax).

    I was born in NZ, I left to live in the UK 20 years ago so have spent most of my life in the UK. I came back for a short period for work/holiday for 3 months. I stayed with a lady in Whakatane in a granny flat type building 6x3 meters. She told me it cost her $8000 for it plus an additional $8000 for the man to come put it up for her (was a flat pack pre-assembled type one) Took him 2.5 days. I couldn't believe it! $16k all up. In the UK could've bought the same size thing for £2500 and £400 for a couple of guys to assemble it if wanted. So that's like $6000 all up equivalent. She showed me a fence that was not long put up, appox 8m long and it cost her $800 (standard post set in concrete and paling job) took the guy 1 day and that was just putting palings only on - no posts or rails. Then showed me a tree she was getting cut down and that was $800 as well. Its actually a pure rip off. I really was astounded, she told me its pretty standard in NZ. Question is... Why is it! I kind of found NZ a very greedy money hungry nation overall, sorry but it's just the vibe I got there. Sad really. The UK is definitely cheaper by a long shot, and food wise too, and rent, higher wages and lower house prices overall and much more opportunity for careers and travel is cheap. I sold an old 2004 Citeron work van just before I went to NZ, £300 - basically scrap value. In NZ it would be worth about $7000. Astounding! Even though I am a NZer, I couldn't live there again, I do love NZ, don't get me wrong but it's just unaffordable and too slow and kinda feels a bit behind the rest of the world with many things, whilst at the same time being extremely expensive. It's an odd combination.

    We left NZ exactly 3 years ago after 1 year in Auckland and 5 in Dunedin. We had many many reasons to leave but right up there was cost of living, it's ridiculous. Compared to the UK most things are double or treble the cost in NZ. I honestly don't know how people survive in NZ, all our wages just went on the basics, there was never anything left over. So all that happens is you lead an incredibly boring life in a country that's not really very exciting.
    Best thing we ever did was sell up and move back to the UK. Life is so much easier and fulfilling.

    See, I'm moving from Ontario, Canada to Auckland New Zealand in October and this is more reasonable than pricing here (currently). The housing, food, gas, utilities, phone bill are all very similar to what it is here, the big difference is the living wage. In Ontario, minimum wage is $15 an hour vs. here its about $21. That alone makes a huge difference!

    If I could land a really, really high paying job, I'd like to live in Auckland. The nice suburbs as so fucking nice but you gotta dish out probably $3m+ to get a house.

    Considering New Zealand is mostly a farming economy the price of meat dairy and veggies is astronomical, what happened? when I lived in NZ in the 1970s they practically gave meat and dairy products away, it was way cheaper than the UK where I had came from, now I think there would be riots here if we had to pay some of the prices you all have to pay and as for housing costs blimey I thought here in England was expensive but compared to Auckland our prices are a steal and I never thought I would say that, this video was an eye opener for anyone thinking of moving there.

    Nothing like watching you guys stuff at 1.20 am haha. Those little drawings are dope and I didn't know you play the piano like a boss. Nice stuff bro! Possibly a theme song coming any time soon? Haha. And damn it sure isn't cheap there. I try to eat mostly organic foods too so groceries would be through the roof haha. I guess you just have to make sure you're ballin' hard income wise ey to keep up with all those prices ey? Anyway it does all of us some good to struggle for a bit so we can appreciate the abundance more. As long as we can get out the struggle. But you guys apartment and your parents place look niceee

I am so jelly that you can play the piano >.< I've always wanted to learn. All that food looked SO good, especially the egg that you cut into. Wonderful video! I live in San Diego and the cost of living is very similar, the main difference is that on top of all the living expenses, we still have to pay for healthcare. So for me, NZ is actually a little bit cheaper. Does NZ have different school districts or do they all operate as one? Here, school districts also determine the price of some homes: better schools, more expensive homes.

    • @PeterandYen
      @PeterandYen  4 года назад

      Regarding the school districts in the big cities it works exactly the same. The better school zones are generally surrounded by higher priced properties.

    Fuel in NZ isn't too bad.
    In the Czech Republic it's about the same cost, but minimum wage is about $4.70 NZ...
    A 1 hour bus ticket is $1NZ
    An all day underground ticket in Prague is $7.40NZ
    A first class train ticket from Auckland to Hamilton would be about $10.
    I get a half litre of beer at the pub for between $1.70 and $2
    Rent a modern 2 bedroom apartment for $156NZ a week including power, water and heating.
    Get a meal at a local restaurant for $10NZ including a beer.

    At least it's not as expensive as Perth in general. Perth is one of the most expensive cities in the world.
    Housing prices in Perth are some of the highest in Australia too.
    But petrol is way more expensive in NZ than the average $1.50/L in Perth. Japan costs about ¥150/L.
    Renting my 2 bedroom apartment with a kitchen and no living room costs ¥45,000 a month just one stop from Osaka.
    As you know eating out in Japan can be very cheap but it's super expensive in Perth.

    Me, a Swede living in Stockholm.
    - these prices sound awfully familiar…
    While I’m watching this, 1 nzd is about 6 sek.
    3000nzd = about 18500sek. Even after taxes, that is considered a pretty low monthly income for 1 person and won’t get you far in Stockholm.
    Housing is so expensive it’s almost funny and the gas and electricity price is just rising and rising.

    Okay, $600-800 Auckland rent for a 3 bedroom is either an understatement or a really lucky find. its closer towards one-thousand per week on a 3 bedroom house - which is why most people house-share (or 'flat') to split costs up between 3-4 people typically as rent can then be dropped to a more reasonable $250 per week (per person). Still - you can get a whole house to yourself for that money in some parts of Australia. Brisbane and The Gold Coast for example have brand new 3 Bedroom HOUSES that will set you back $350-400. It wouldn't surprise me if statistics found Auckland to be one of the highest income to living discrepancies in the western world.

    • @PeterandYen
      @PeterandYen  5 лет назад +1

      The Auckland rent I've quoted is more of an average rather than focusing just on expensive 3 bedroom places in central Auckland. For example you can get a 3 bedroom place for 500 in flatbush. Where as 600 will get you a decent 3 beddie out south or west. I believe Auckland places 23rd in the world's expensive cities ranks.

    • @mattl1962
      @mattl1962 5 лет назад

      I would assume the world's expensive cities rankings don't list average household income versus average household costs in that equation - which (in theory) would make living in New Zealand be put further up the ranks. I agree with you, and it isn't the most expensive country for property on the world market, given that the NZ dollar isn't really as competitive as the Aussie Dollar, the US Dollar or the UK Pound.

    I live in Massachusetts, USA on the man made island of Cape Cod, one street from the ocean. While your meat is surely more expensive, the rest of the food seems similar to our costs. I pay $250 USD a week for a small 1 bedroom based on a 4 wk mth. Most places will cost $1500 a mth. My phone is $35 with unlimited, electric about $25 with no choice as to who my provider is, water included in rent, oil for heat and hot water runs me about $400 a yr. Internet $95 monthly. I can not drink water from the tap. Restaurants seem to be similar prices too. I work for a large hospital group so my health/dental insurance costs run me $100 a month, which is the exception not the rule. Lots of folks have been saddled with $1200 to $2000 monthly for health insurance., not to mention the copays anywhere from $10 to $75 per visit and then deductibles of $1500 to $5000 per yr, meaning you must pay the first $1500-$5000 plus the monthly cost before insurance will pay for a visit/procedure. The quality of life has been drastically reduced for most in this country in the name of Capitalism. My cost of living is roughly 75% of my income working 32 hrs a wk. I've been giving serious thought to expatting, since I have family in Sweden, I looked to the north, then my daughter suggested NZ. Now I can't see any where else. Thank you for your videos. Peace.

About unlimited fibre (internet) you can actually get really cheap if you know to shop around, what we got is unlimited fibre from 2 degrees for just $59.99/month, about power, i think we got the cheapest now for just 30 cents per kilowatts, so for us a family of 3 and a dog our power bill is around $80 a month. Water is around $40-50 a month. We are on the North Shore.

      Hey guys thanks for watching wow guess we've grown a fair bit over the last few years. Crazy that we're almost as populated as London now. Yeah for a massive country/continent Aussie population is pretty small. Hope to see you both in New Zealand one day 😊👌

  • @GustheStruggleBus

    Well I really like how you went into detail with everything. I can't believe that gas prices are so high over there. I guess it does make sense since you guys are so far away from everything LOL. Your parents was really nice and I think it's very interesting that it is pretty much the same cost to get a townhouse 10 to get an actual house. Thank you so much for the detailed information

      Hey guys a lot of people actually live in campervans here too 😊 not so many bus conversions. But yeah filling the petrol will cost you a bit 😉 if you ever come to New Zealand hope this helps with the budgeting 👍

    OMG those drone shots throughout the video 😍😍 Auckland is stunning... but WOW paying that much for petrol and coffee ... Also had no idea there was a difference between an apartment and a unit until right now 😂

      Hahahaha in us the wording for apartment and unit might be different but in New Zealand there is a big difference 😉 yeah petrol food can cost quite a bit but the quality of life is really good 😊

    Can I stay at your mum and dads place next time we visit Auckland? Looks like a pretty sweet pad 👍
    Cost of living looks on par with Australian cities. Except fuel is much more expensive in NZ. Noticed this on our trip a few years back.

    • @PeterandYen
      @PeterandYen  6 лет назад

      Hahahaha hey guys yeah mum and dads place is very comfortable it's cause mum loves decorating 😂 I think Auckland is really similar to Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne. Slightly more expensive food wise and way more expensive with the petrol.

    • @LeonandTash
      @LeonandTash 6 лет назад

      I reckon Sydney still beats out Auckland on a high cost of living and we'd say Brisbane is probably a little cheaper but that was definitely changing when we left at the end of last year, costs of power/gas/petrol and eating out in the city were definitely going up. Perth was an awesome change from Aucklands costs when we first moved there, but a few years later things like power and water costs were on par. Here's hoping we don't see all the Aussies moving to NZ for cheaper living aye 😂🤣😂

    Love your parent's house! Here in LA, a 2 bedroom + 2 bathroom apartment goes for about 3000 usd/month... I think that translates to 4500 nzd/month... maybe we gotta consider moving to New Zealand 😊

      Yeah I seen some other videos but I think your video is right on the living cost of NZ. I totally agree that meat is a crazy price. There's lots of good countries😊. It's a hard choice.

      @@AsterCalibur Once you own a home its not so bad. But thats the problem. I am 45 and bought my first home 2015. I simply could not afford the home I have if had waited. Still life is good and I can pay the countdown (supermarket) prices for meat. But its New Zealand and you can always go and get it yourself. Fishing and hunting is in the DNA here:-)

    • @AsterCalibur
      @AsterCalibur 5 лет назад

      @@rickginza Houses are not too bad in smaller areas but like most big cities in the world NZ is also high. Yeah if you got the gear for it alright you still have to pay for petrol in lot of places to go where you like to go unless you live really close by. Yeah meat you can get at the butchers for a little bit less also but meat overall is expensive.

    My first comment has to be about the gasoline price, man.. I would like to work only to feed my car .. or give it away :)
    Your parents' house is amazing!! Everything seems very expensive to me. What about the salaries there? What is the earning/expending relation?
    Thanks for sharing your beautiful NZ with us :) Btw Deloite should pay for the add :)

    • @PeterandYen
      @PeterandYen  6 лет назад

      Yo bro yes the summary is definitely everything is indeed pretty expensive... minimum wage is $16.50 an hour and on average people are paid 10 to 20% less here vs Australia yet the costs are about par. Many people live with big mortgages as houses are very expensive too vs their income. But in the end of the day it is a beautiful county just need to be aware of how expensive things are. Gasoline prices are eye watering for sure 😥

    I was a bit surpriased u can spend around $120 for 2 people for a week, if u are meat eater Im sure that is a lot more. We are vegans and we spend around $150 (sometimes a bit more when u also need to top up the cleaning products) for 2people per week.
    Anyways apart from that, this video will be super helpful for many people.

    Auckland is expensive just like any major city would be like newyork, london, paris.Its the same everywhere... Im sure smaller cities are a lot cheaper than auckland.. My friend rented a room in London for which he was paying £200/week lol ( just 1 room ) and this was about 5 years ago
