    They are NZ fur seals. If they're on rocks, they're seals. Sealions are found more often alone, on sand. They are rare and endangered - but you find huge colonies of NZ fur seals.

    Fantastic...I have been to Aotearoa 8 times since 1999...I have been to Wellington, but have never been on a ferry across the Cook Strait to the Sth Island ❗ I definitely WILL do it on my next trip to Wellington ❗

    If you do the over night sailing, they let you board the ship around midnight, get all tucked into bed, then the ship leaves about 2.30am, and you wake up as the ship arrives into Picton, refreshed and ready for your drive down to Christchurch.

    I've done this crossing twice, both times from South to North islands. It's one of the most beautiful ferry crossings in the world, with the crossing of the Cook Strait and Queen Charlotte Sound. The only ferry route that is comparable is the BC Ferries route from Tsawwassen (Vancouver) to Sidney on Vancouver Island, Canada.

    The overnight with cabin, from memory is that you can board with your car/camper at about 11pm and hit the hay to wake up to the morning service (saves on sleeping in the carpark). So you get a sleep and shower before leaving port at dawn for the crossing. Get some breakfast , enjoy the trip and drive off at the other end.
    I'm not sure if they still have this particular cabin service, but they do have cabins, and they now have a dog friendly policy if you want to have your dog on board, but in restricted areas.
    Cabins also provided for heavy vehicle drivers.
    Bluebridge is great.

    Bluebridge ferry came about because of the trucking owner Jim Barker...He booked one of his trucks onto Inter Islander (which is owned by NZ govt) ..& they told him he'd have to wait...So he said I'll buy a ferry then! & he did! Amazing story bout a working kiwi man who started with 1 truck & built a fleet...call in to Otorohanga on your travels & check out the Jim Barker playground...fabulous adventure playground & picnic area for families passing through...donated to the town from the late Jim Barker...He started his business in this little town & never forgot where he started out...kudos to his family...

    There are 2 ferry operators that operated passenger, vehicles (car/campervan/trucks) and freight between Wellington in the North Island and Picton the South Island, being InterIslander and Bluebridge. Interslander like Bluebridge offer onboard cabins, food courts. movie theatre and plenty of passenger space. Interislander has more sailings than Bluebridge.
    Crossing for both four operators is 3.5 hours which is made up as - approx 50 minutes in Wellington harbour, 1 hr 5 minutes crossing Cook Strait and 1hr 10 mins in the Marlborough Sounds which cover alot of area. You only see a small part of the Sounds. The Marlborough Sounds where a network of valleys prior to the last ice age.
    Just a point to note - These ferries main function is to carry freight, so car/campervan and passenger space may be reduce depending of the freight being carried, so it is important to have a reservation. The other reason to have a reservation, Cook Strait is notorious for rough sailings due to weather, and sea swells, so if any sailings are canceled, passengers who have reservations are given rebooking priority to other sailings.
    Josh and Ashley are correct, taking a Cook Strait ferry sailing is an unique scenic experience.

    I did a 8:30pm sailing in the bluebride and arrived just after 12am, and the only people on the boat were truckers, and there were like 15 of them, you don't need a cabin such a waist of money for a 3hr sailing, its so easy to just sleep on a couch when there is no one of the boat
    I have done this trip more then 15 times in my 18 years. And try doing this trip at Christmas time when there are hundreds of screaming rats crying and the weather is a shit hole, then in no way is is luxurious

      @@seniorfamz4090 I live in Wellington and I'd never even heard of Bluebridge-only the Interislander due to the massive TV ad campaign they had a few years back (okay, a while back when people under 50 still actually watched TV). And you know that any company with a massive ad campaign isn't going to be cheap, so I've never imagined myself using it and always recommended that people search the internet for what must be a cheaper option out there.
      So subsidising this trip as a form of advertising is the best thing for Bluebridge to do, because it doesn't cost them a fortune, it doesn't turn off people like myself who are suspicious of anything that qualifies as an 'ad campaign', and most importantly it reaches a key market for them of international travellers on budget. And because this is a whole video rather than a short 30 second ad, people get to see that the ferry's low cost doesn't mean you're sailing in a dinky shack-boat. It's all well and good to have an ad that consists of several selectively beautiful crew members smiling at the camera in the most glamorous parts of the ship before cutting into a bunch of cinematic shots of the journey's scenery that were all taken at different times of day in order to be the most flattering, but these days most people-young people in particular-want to get an actual look at something before committing their money to it. So given all that, the fact that Bluebridge sponsored this video coupled with all of the (actually pertinent) footage it contains makes Bluebridge look like a very nice place to commit your money to.

    • @WAYAWAYWithAsh
      @WAYAWAYWithAsh  5 лет назад +2

      lol I did think it was a little funny the way she worded it, but what she meant was, if you compare all the options we could find, Bluebridge is typically the least expensive of the ferry services.

    my number one recommendation is the inland scenic route of east coast from chch down . lots of little walks off it and it takes you through the hills of the Canterbury planes, little longer trip but not just the main highway. If your heading to the west coast the Arthur's pass is a must.
    Before the earthquakes i would have told you to go to see the baby seal at Ohau stream waterfall in kaikoura. look up on Yt "seal waterfall kaikoura" if you want to see what it was like and get really jelly. There is so much to do and see here it just hard to pick one. The inland route is my back yard used to travel to work along it most days so it a good drive that bypasses the main highway for a bit. Type "Inland Scenic Route, Canterbury" in google maps to find it

    I was always told a boat can go on a ship, but a ship won’t go on a boat. Another version I heard was ships have decks and boats do not. I served in the merchant navy and it seems that only old sea dogs get upset when you call a ship a boat. Just call them what you are comfortable with😘

    This is purely an ad for Bluebridge and should be disclosed prominently as same. A 3.5 hour journey makes cabins seem like overkill. I took Interislander (cheapest last month) and had a great seat, great view, and fine service. I'm sad when you present these as "travel" videos when they're really ads.

    • @kimm3473
      @kimm3473 5 лет назад +2

      They were pretty clear about it and included #ad. I find they are some of the best at still providing useful content in paid sponsorships. If I go to NZ, I might consider taking a ferry not a plane. I know Bluebridge is an option and would still check out others to compare then make an informed decision. I respect your opinion though. Sounds like it isn’t your thing:)

      Morally and legally we're obligated to inform of a partnership, which we did multiple times throughout the video, and in text form in the description. The truth is a ferry crossing was a necessity and we would have filmed it regardless... because that's what we do on "travel" videos.

    It's been a decade or so since i last took that trip. Have traveled it several times over my life. Thanks so much for showing it to me through fresh eyes. Entering or exiting Wellington at night by ferry is beautiful, but you really want to enter Picton by day to see all the natural sights.
