I've got photos of my whole family standing in/on Fox Glacier. You didn't even have to walk from the car park, it was right there. But that was 35 years ago. And winter. There was snow everywhere.
I live in the deep south (more south than Hokitika) and the weather can change within minutes from a beautiful sunny day to a stormy dark day haha glad you enjoyed our part of the world!!
@11:05 That viewing point is just the first one. If you took the other to your left-hand side of the valley you can go much further and much closer to the glacier. We went there in 2013 and the furthest walking point allowed without being in a guided group was right at the end of the glacier itself. Today in 2020 though, judging by Google Map satellite photo, the glacier has receded about 1km from that point.
Yes was at Fox 1997 walked in from the village could walk right up to and touch it only two other people there about five cars passed me walking in how it has changed.
Great vlog. Just looked up some info about that glacier, it seems only to be 400m above sea level there, and the glacier already shrunk and grow again, quite impressive. The glaciers here in the alps definitely only shrink and very fast unfortunately.
I went in a helicopter and walked on the glacier in July 2017! Very cool experience but I was completely terrified of falling on the ice the whole time. I also stayed at that hostel with my Topdeck group. Made me miss NZ soo much.
That's crazy, I did the helihike at Franz on the 1st of March this year, my bf and i worked there for 4 months. I wish I'd found your channel earlier, would have been great to meet you guys and chat while you where there. Also PS, you still wouldn't be allowed to fly a drone at Franz, it's highly unlikely even with a licence. You'd need to be from a big budget movie or news channel I think to be allowed because of the sheer amount of helicopters flying there. It would be a huge risk to life. They would have to ground all flights to allow a drone to fly, so yeah, unlikely unless you're a very influential person.
Its so glad to see your NZ adventure again. So syrreal to watch you travel around the country I called home for a year. Everything is so familiar but yet not. While you were in Fox glacier, did you go to lake Matheson too? Sometimes the pics you get there are epic :) Cannot wait to see more of NZ from you guys!
don't be fooled by glacier sheet clasping at the front ! there is more ice and snow packed on top ! that was from a professor in ice glaciers who specializes in ice movement !
Wow, what a fun vlog. Its always a pleasure to watch your adventures. Thanks a million for sharing it with us. Oh, before i forget, what was the story with the stove :-)
I wish Oprah would discover you and you get a TV show. Ashley is the Rachel Ray of travel. You two always brighten the day. Where are your alpaca sweaters ! Where in the world do you store all your "stuff".
This video was an eye opener. We really have to do something about global warming. Our beautiful planet is suffering as we speak. Thanks for educating us Josh and Ashley.
The South Island's west coast is unique, as it is an alpine rail forest region due to high amounts of rainfall due to the predominate weather conditions coming from Australia, picking up moisture from the Tasman Sea and dumping this moisture as the weather hits the Southern Alps being the main mountain range that separates the South Island's the west coast from the east coast. The Southern Alps is where the Pacific plate collides with the Australian plate. When at Fox Glacier, it seems that you did the Lake Moeraki walk which is a great walk but is not the viewing platform for Fox Glacier Glacier. The fern shown in the video is native to NZ. To see Fox Glacier, it is about 15 minutes by vehicle or approximately 45 minutes to Fox Glacier village. Fox Glacier is approximately 50 minutes drive south of Franz Josef and is a better to place to stay as it is not so touristy as Franz Josef and it is closer to Wanaka and Queenstown. If traveling from Franz Josef to Wanaka and Queenstown, you have to travel through Fox Glacier.. With regards to petrol prices, petrol is expensive due to high shipping costs of crude oil to NZ, refining petrol in NZ and distribution costs, especially to rural regions especially on the the South Island's west coast.
You got ecology a bit wrong. New Zealand forest of the West Coast in botanical term is temperate rainforest. NZ in fact has quite low 'bushline' by global standards where larger native trees stop growing about a certain height - in the lower south Island it about 600- 650 metres above sea level, sometimes lower. It means that in fact NZ doesn't have a true 'alpine forest' category. Also the weather the South Island gets, and particularly the rain systems for the West Coast, come from the southern ocean below Australia. The bottom of Tasmania is roughly in line with top 1/4 of the South Island.
It's such a wonderful place to be!, but as you're going to hostels please show the amenities, I have found them brilliant, and the ambience between fellow travelers is so good cudn't ask for more! Safe travels x
Ashley, that little ribbon in your hair was too cute!! Why are there drone bans everywhere??? 🤔 I suppose those loud little flying machines disrupt the wildlife... And of course they want your money 😅
No the big issue is that too many drone operators didn't know and/or follow airspace regulations and NZ national parks have a high number of scenic helicopter and small fixed wing aircraft on sightseeing trips which also get fairly low to the ground. For instance at West coast Glaciers, where this piece was filmed, there's a guided trip glacier walk which uses Helicopters to transport tourists onto the glacier further up where its safe to walk around on it. There were numerous very near misses of drones and aircraft (so basically near deadly accidents) so the NZ government introduced a regional registration system to make try and control the number and the way drones operating in an area, and they can also trace someone who operates a drone in irresponsible manner. The fee of NZ $50 is simply to cover the administration costs of operating this safety program. As NZ doesn't charge any fees to enter a National Park (or other conservation area) including allowing Campervans to overnight in many scenic areas for free, I don't think this charge is unreasonable.
And like every other new zealander who did not pay a TV license to watch TV. I wouldn't bother with a license for the drone. I wonder what the fine is.
Sad what's happening to the environment. Think of the polar bears!..... Wait....🙈🙄 Are uou guys heading to Japan with E & A? The people in New Zealand seem so friendly!! And there I was thinking it was just Thomas & Sheena who are so chirpy! 😜
Sarah we’re actually splitting with E & A for now. We’re headed to Thailand 🇹🇭!! More sunshine. We’re not ready to go to winter weather again just yet;)
Sarah we also just did a series in Peru and it was amazing. Check out our Peru playlist ruclips.net/p/PLNoO2EcowQXtsqqM4Fzvl17jZXCb4CpZw but I don’t know if it will make it easier to decide 😊 They’re both amazing!
@@WAYAWAYWithAsh I've watched all your videos and Ur the reason I wanted to go to Peru in the first place from Ur trip to Machu Picchu! I never miss a video from u both! As soon as the notification comes up, I'm 🤓🧐 lol! Thank you tho 😊
Liking that Ashley's eye shadow & hair ribbon match... Looks good :) 2:50 "Loverly night of sleep"...? Playing with words, or typo...? :/ Oh no, NOT pants... 3:18 LoL, "Let's go see the... Global warming"... 9:25 You are right, that is expensive for petrol... (Australia has it ~25% cheaper) 12:56 Was waiting for Eric's card to snap... ;) A little more noticeable you lacked battery in this video, not hugely...
I've been having issues forming words lately, too; I blame the new moon. Also, pants are stupid, I agree! Lol but was this, perhaps, a small jab at those jerks leaving comments about your shorts? 🤔🤣 On a sad note, climate change. It sucks that we brought our world to this (see crowded parking area for one example). That glacier recession is crazy!
Yeah it's a weird balance where individually I can do very little to help the earth but collectively as our attitude shifts we start to make better choices
@@WAYAWAYWithAsh - Using a campervan and car is putting more CO2 in the atmosphere, which is contributing to global warming and erratic weather conditions. hence glaciers are receding.
If you're planning on visiting New Zealand, just keep in mind that while the fuel prices may seem high, a lot of that is various taxes including infrastructure and also healthcare levy, so if you're in an accident you will be completely covered and won't get charged a cent for the hospital visit even if you're a foreign visitor. We like people to be alive and healthy. And at the end of the day, our fuel prices are actually the 6th lowest in the OECD.
Also Franz Josef or Fox have some of the most expensive petrol prices in NZ as it is so remote. The cities would be at least 15c to 50c per liter cheaper, depending where you go
The stress y'all were going through is evident (since I heard about it through WayMore). I don't know if I would have guessed; but it isn't your usual style. Still good though. Reminder to all - Global Climate Change is a reality.
Nothing 'bitter sweet' as you said about global warming and glaciers vanishing it's very sad and a serious matter which eventually destroys this planet!!!

I so thought the licence would break in the door. Daylight savings in New Zealand is the best.
I remember the Glaciers used to be right down to the barriers when i was a kid,it's so sad to see it shrinking.
There is a certain irony in flying around the world to witness the retreat of a glacier.
So cool to see you guys travelling around the region I live in 😊 You should come back and see the northern West Coast too.
Real nice video. You all have made me want to go. Thanks for sharing your travels.
You definitely should if you get the opportunity!!
Hokitika - there are beautiful jade shops there and you can find it on the beaches, you should grab a souvenir :)

Ahhhhh!!! Ramble and Ritual in Hokitika make the best cheese scones in the world!!! South Island is beautiful!
"The weather has taken a turn, I've had to put pants on" - That is a kiwi statement if ever I heard one lol
Glad i saw it when it was still in its glorious form
Cool videos guys! Keep up the New Zealand adventures
One more Vid in NZ than off to Thailand.
Also a very cool destination. We are going to the Philippines after NZ! Have fun over there , looking forward to more vids @@WAYAWAYWithAsh
I remember being able to take a chopper to stand on it. And got pics of being up next to it. Changed a fair bit.
I remember going here as a kid around 20 years ago and it looked much different, the glacier wasn't a far walk from the carpark.
Massive love to you both.... loving aotearoa when this whole pandemics is over you guys need to come back..
Very Happy to see you guys in NZ! Im travelling to Auckland next week and ill be driving until queenstown! Hope to see you around there
