It was probably best the series took on a lighter tone, watching a child act like he's genuinely getting traumatized wouldn't make these films nearly as fun

Welcome to my nightmare. The Chucky Good Guy Doll is based on the My Buddy doll, which looks nearly identical to one in the movie. I saw this when I was a kid while that doll was in my bedroom. I also had the Robotron toy, which comes to life in Poltergeist. My trauma is real.
1:15 what made chucky work is his killing skills and outsmarting people. They knew they couldn’t make chucky physically threaten because no matter how scary he look, he’s doll so they made him sneaky and smart.
So, as a kid, I had no cable. My parents were cheap. But as I was constantly staying with my Grandma, while they worked, as a young kid I would constantly scroll the cable channels. It happened like four times and scared the bejesus out of me and gave me massive nightmares.
The creepy and scary thing about Chucky is haha super human grown man strength with magic voodoo powers. He's gotten more powerful over time and has been able to split his soul at this point into various vessels and people. Another example of movies that are smarter than their sequels and pop cultural reputations: Death Wish with Charles Bronson. The first Death Wish is a surprisingly self-aware and very political vigilante film. The sequels are mostly trash, but part 3 is so over the top it has to be seen to be believed.
Someone may have already mentioned this but I think the artist you were thinking of who went deaf and painted the black paintings was Goya. He’s my favourite painter purely because of how raw and unpolished his paintings were, especially for the time (1820s). I’m so glad you mentioned him.

The scary part to me is that you would never expect a doll to hurt you, so although you might be able to overpower him, he is so sneaky and subtle you are dead before you realise what has happened.
In some of Chucky's later appearances they actually do address how he is so effective at overpowering people despite his size and it mostly just comes down to he is super powered by a voodoo god Damballa.
Saw this movie when I was younger and it scared the hell out of me! I learned to love the films and the TV series based on the film franchise. Originally, Steven Spielberg was going to direct the film, but turned down as he was too busy working on Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade. Tom Holland was hired after Spielberg was impressed by the horror comedy Fright Night. William Friedkin, Howard Franklin, Robert Wise, Robert Aldrich, Rocky Morton and Annabel Jenkel, Irvin Kershner, and Jack Clayton were considered for directing.
The creator of Child’s Play is Don Mancini, who wrote the original screenplay for the 1988 film. Mancini also remained actively involved in the franchise, serving as the primary writer and later directing several of the sequels, including Seed of Chucky (2004), Curse of Chucky (2013), and Cult of Chucky (2017). He also created the Chucky TV series, which debuted in 2021, continuing the story of the infamous killer doll. Don Mancini and Universal continued producing sequels, maintaining creative control over the Chucky character. Mancini objected to the 2019 reboot, publicly distancing himself from it, as it had no involvement from him or Brad Dourif (the voice of Chucky in the original films). This split allowed the Child’s Play reboot (2019) to exist as a standalone reimagining while Mancini continued developing his version of the Chucky franchise, including the ongoing TV series.
I think Dolls (1986) is the scariest killer doll movie I've seen. Also, I love the freeze frame at the end of this movie. To me it's symbolic of how Andy is never going to be able to close the door on this chapter of his life. This will stay with him forever, and that haunting ending credits song perfectly encapsulates Andy's ruined childhood and lost innocence.
it’s funny you mention andy navigating chicago better than the police. 😊 it’s the no car effect. i was the same way with my mom, knew several different ways to get where we needed to go by public transport. she’d just ask me. when my son was younger and i’d be driving, i’d ask him the best way to drive and he’d nail it. even had it down to which way had fewer stop signs and which street lights were shorter. passengers are paying attention.
Chucky may not seem scary being a killer doll, but you've got to realize that that's a murderous adult spirit in the chucky doll, along with voodoo powers of the mighty Damballa when he did his chant to put his spirit in the doll. This is why he's strong enough to hurt people. And did you know Chucky's name Charles Lee Ray is based off of 3 real-life serial killers? Charles Manson, Lee Harvey Oswald and James Earl Ray?
Slappy from Goosebumps.. when I was about 10, I had a bunch of the books, and after locking eyes with Slappy on the cover for too long, I got freaked and ran, ended up slipping down the stairs and got the wind knocked out of me, burned up my back too. Chucky never gave me that feeling but the doll and dummy episodes from Twilight Zone do it for me.
I remember when I was 5 or 6 and I was flipping through the channels on tv late at night after having a bad dream, and after channel surfing for awhile I went into the movie channels and the first thing I see and hear is Chucky's melted corpse saying "Hi I'm Chucky, wanna PLLLLLAAAAAAYYYYyyyy..." And I was freaked the hell out because I had zero context so I thought i was watching some kid looking being burning and melting and saying creepy shit. It was my first encounter with the fear of the unknown and it has stuck with me permanently.
Something this film does that is never really accounted for in all following films is that the Chucky doll’s appearance changes throughout the movie to become more and more human. The hairline recedes, dark circles form under the eyes, the eyes turn teal blue like actor Brad Dourif’s eyes, he becomes paler, and the skin goes from latex doll to more and more flesh like towards the end. It’s a subtle and effortful detail that I think makes this one easily the best in the franchise in terms of being creepy.
Oh man, I really hope you will take this all the way and watch the whole movie series and the TV show. The quality varies - as does the genre - but it's really impressive as a labour of love, not to mention from a technical standpoint. The same writer, crucial parts of the same crew (Tony Gardener, the lead puppeteer and sfx artist) and even the cast (going through generations, as Brad Dourif's own daughter appears in the later movies and show) all stayed with it or returned to it in a period of over thirty five years, which is a testament to how much it means to them. You'll never expect where the movies go and how it ends up in the TV show. (Exception being the reboot movie which had Mark Hamill voice Chucky). And yeah, Andy is undoubtedly the cutest kid in movie history.
It was at this moment that Andy would never be the same again and… I would imagine that he’d never celebrate his birthday anymore. I wouldn’t blame him. It also kind of kills me whenever I see that boy cry while thinking Chucky is gonna kill him when Chucky had some even worse planned for him!
This movie came out when I was about 9 years old, AND I had a talking doll kinda like him at the time (only it was a girl called "Cricket"). The movie scared the crap out of me. My doll ended up in a garbage bag, stuffed as far into my closet as I possibly could 😂
I'm one of these who was traumatized by Child's Play as a kid thanks to a neighborhood friend who was a few years older than me. I was only 7 whereas he was 11. His older sister would babysit us and she wasn't a great babysitter as we would watch any movies that they had. They had a lot of horror movies. This began my experience of horror movies in which I watched films like Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Halloween, Hellraiser as well as several others to name some. I fell in love with Horror movies as a kid. My parents had no idea at all. Not until Child's Play. I didn't know what kind of horror movie I was going to watch and during this movie, I didn't finish it. Instead, I cried and ran back home across the street. My parents found out quite quickly. I was so terrified of Chucky that I even threw my younger brother's life sized dolls into the basement where I rarely went. I refused to go into Spencers at the Mall because they always had Chucky dolls. I also even avoided the horror section at Blockbuster simply because I did not want to accidentally see the cover of Chucky. That's how traumatized I was, and yet, I was fine watching other horror movies. I really grew up on a lot of other horror movies. It wasn't until around 7 years later or so, when I was just entering high school, that I finally got over it by watching the movie. It can be a goofy movie and I ended up loving it. Went on to watching all other Chucky movies, haha. Wild memories. Many years of nightmares. Love Chucky now, though.
The doll breaking out into swearing is both darkly hilarious but disturbing to think about how Andy was left alone with someone like that. It harkens the feeling of a child being lured in by a predatory adult using kids toys, quite literally in this case
This movie was so great to watch back in the day, always watched horror movies with my family even though I was only 10 at the time, 80's parents didnt give a shit about violence in movies, as long as no graphic sex scenes, then all good.
Nice, I grew up a big fan of this franchise.. Child's Play 3 is my personal favorite, it was actually the first R rated film I ever saw when I was like 8 lol..
Oh my god you have to watch the rest of the franchise, one of my all time faves. There are only two mediocre entries in the whole thing which are the remake (which you can skip) and three. The rest are insanely fun camp that lean more and more into satirical horror comedy.
So the chucky franchise is probably the most consistent slasher series there is. That’s because they’re all written by the same guy. After 3 they become more satirical but they’re still pretty good and curse of Chucky is actually one of the better ones imo which is the second to last. Haven’t seen the show yet but heard good things. Highly recommend you checking out at least the first 4
With "Jaws", Spielberg wanted to show a lot more of the shark but their creation was looking unrealistic, so he filmed most of the film around it until the shark looked right. It worked out beautifully. Art through adversity.
The chucky franchise is awesome. The same actors and crew have stuck with it for decades, and you can see the love that goes into it. Even the bad movies have their moments. Chucky has this weird quality where he’s both hilarious and super messed up, similar to Englund’s Freddy I suppose but it really works with him being this killer doll. He’s both creepy where he’s this uncanny valley doll who’s super fucked up but also the premise of this foul mouthed killer Beanie Baby is just kind of hilarious.
The reason Chucky is by far my favorite slasher franchise is that it's all been written by the same guy through the entire run (Don Mancini), and he's genuinely taken it to some bizarre places. i love the child’s play franchise! chucky is seriously an underrated horror character. he always used to freak me out the most too haha.
The 2nd movie is even better.
That painter you were talking about is Francisco de Goya
Brad Dourif the greatest character actor ever IMO. And every role I've seen him in, he gives 150% without hamming it up.
it’s funny you mention andy navigating chicago better than the police.
The artist who painted the walls of his home after his wife's death was Francisco Goya. Entertaining Reaction as always James 👍
I was lucky enough to see all the 80s movies in the theater ...this one was awesome!!!!
My doll ended up in a garbage bag, stuffed as far into my closet as I possibly could 😂
In the words of my uncle, watch out for that Chucky James! Man that dude scared the shit out of me with these films. Hahaha
Movie that ages like fine wine
4:11 I’m sitting and I’m like “it’s Chicago” shrugs my shoulders 🤣😭
Child’s Play 2 is 🐐 status
The doll breaking out into swearing is both darkly hilarious but disturbing to think about how Andy was left alone with someone like that. It harkens the feeling of a child being lured in by a predatory adult using kids toys, quite literally in this case
My dad showed me this movie when I was like 5 and it scared the living hell out of me!
@24:28 reportedly, the man gave himself an aneurysm in childs play 3.
Just from voice acting is crazy.
That’s awesome. Really enjoyed this film so that sounds like a lot of fun!
Highly recommend you checking out at least the first 4
Bride of Chucky is my favorite of all of these films, I hope you get a chance to check it out.
Best movie in the series. It gets more comical with each movie both takes away from the movie and adds the charm of Chucky.
The 80s man the best decade for horror
16:26
Such a great moment 😂
The scars became Chucky's signature look but he's always been creepiest at his base design imo.
James as my OG reactor. I hope one day you'll do the The Empty Man and help it get the attention it deserves.
This movie straight up scared me back in the day.
Hi, I'm Chucky, and I wouldn't talk if I were you. Heidy-ho!
Calling the cops hahaha
Brad Douriff who voices chucky is Billy Bibbet from One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest
please continue I love watching you and the second I saw you are watching Chucky i immediately pressed it.
awesome! happy people are enjoying this as much as me
With "Jaws", Spielberg wanted to show a lot more of the shark but their creation was looking unrealistic, so he filmed most of the film around it until the shark looked right.
This is sort of a Christmas movie I think…totally..
The best movie of the entire franchise.
That’s academy award winner Brad Dourif who plays Charles Lee ray in the beginning and is the voice of chucky btw
I don't remember Brad winning academy award? He was nominated for sure but never won one.
