Great seeing a novice have a go, as that is what most of us are? plastering is the ONE thing I don't attempt as I want a really good finish, I have done some and can do a reasonable job but unless you are doing it every day it is so difficult to get that final coat smooth, no bubbles etc. Great video for anyone wanting to have a go though, well done you.
I think you did a great job for a first go. You'll tell how good your job was when you start painting. Little word of advise, you definitely need to get your second coat on sooner. Perfect mixing though
Nice one ! i know that the vid is dated, but you did eclectically well. I have also stared DIY plastering and it is hard job but once you get it done correctly it is really rewarding :)
@@HelpfulHomeDIY You say that, and there's nothing wrong with a bit of sanding here and there, but sanding a whole plastered wall (or, god forbid, ceiling) is really something you don't want to do regularly. Really, harder than you might hope.
utube882 thanks matey! The finish was ok, but it did need a good sanding down once dried. Still a few bumps after painting but my wife and I are happy with it 👍
You shouldn't still be trowelling after those dark brown spots are appearing on the wall. Those are areas of crystallised gypsum that appear right at the end of the process after 3-4 hours. If you touch the dark brown spots it is obvious that they are much harder than the surrounding lighter areas, and it's all but impossible to do anything with them. All of the trowelling should be finished well before they appear.
Hi Paul. Can't remember to be honest but if you go to my webpage on it, I'm sure you'll find it - www.helpfulhomediy.co.uk/how-to-skim-coat-plaster-onto-plasterboard/
Good man for having a crack n it looks smashing if it is your first attempt but don't say "it anit as hard as people think" I'm not digging ya but plastering is an art and I'm at the point now where 100m of skim a day has become the norm, it just takes practice... You learn by doing 👍
Hi Charlie, missed this one. I'm not belittling the fine work professional plasterers do, I simply found that it wasn't as difficult as I initially thought it would be. The finish wasn't professional standard, obviously, but it was good enough. The aim of this channel and my website is to encourage fellow DIYer's to give stuff a go, and if I feel that something isn't as difficult as what most people think, then it seems fitting to say so. Sorry if it came across as disrespectful to yourself, that wasn't my intention. All the best.
Love that you labelled the cup of tea, must make sure I note that down in the list of things I'll need when I start plastering!

Thanks Tomy. Agree it's definately one of the hardest diy jobs to do
Thank u
Fair play to you. I’ve recently plastered a chimney breast and that was hard enough. It’s definitely harder than it looks.
Good for you mate, nothing a good sanding can't sort out

Far play for giving it ago, probably like yourself I hate paying labour. How was the finish smoothness? Was anything noticeable when you painted it

Great vid buddy. Why did you stop uploading vids?
Hi Marcus, thanks for asking. It takes a lot of time away from my fam. I'll get back on it at some point
I’m just about to plaster for the first time, and this is a real help and encouragement, thank you

Thanks Nathan, appreciate the tips and explanation 👍

Grand job!
Did it look good painted?
Any further advise 4 years on??
there is no skrim tape on the edges of the plasterboard?
Yes, there is! if you had seen the previous video on how to attach skrim tape you would have seen it? doesn't show up well in the video though.
Hello
hello son :-)

Hehe
That's an external corner trowel its not for internal corner's. Useless for skimming
Still, it works a treat
