    Jeez that Captain was a well-trained hero.
    Double checking his cockpit warning lights, moving the passengers to the front to counter the pitch by changing the center of gravity, having to decide the safest place to land, refusing to fly over heavy populated areas for saftey, and THEN controlling the pitch via the engines.
    Wow....just wow.

    Having another engine in the tail has saved so many.
    The Tristar was one of the finest Airliners every built.
    There is another thing the Tristar had that was very unusual on an airliner, "Lift Dumpers."
    As you push the control column forward the aircraft's attitude would remain the same, as little spoilers would lift up on the wings and reduce lift.
    This could have been a big factor in getting this plane to come down.
    It was one of the safest Airliners ever built. Loved the old bird.

    • @RaysDad
      @RaysDad 5 лет назад +41

    • @conorcorrigan765
      @conorcorrigan765 5 лет назад +65

      Because everything back then was the equivalent of first/business class today, and cost the same as what business/first class costs today. What you are complaining about is the invention of this thing called "economy class" which opened up flying to people who had never been able to afford it before. If you can't afford to fly first/business, you wouldn't have been able to afford to fly during the golden age at all. Economy class may suck, but it is still better than not flying at all- wouldn't you agree?

I'm not sure ppl would watch near misses and almost died, no one wants anyone to die, but we watch, because it's fascinating how they solve accidents and the re-creations for shock value. It's intriguing, but obviously devastating. What's it like for those ppl.. NTSB, rescue workers? They've seen shit I wouldn't wish on anyone. It's taxing on the psyche, mentally haunting, with the sights and sounds, smells etc. of an accident.

    After seeing so many disastrous videos on that DC-10, with the similar rear mounted engine, I finally found one rear mounted engine that actually HELPED, I mean SAVED all these lives by that thrust differential.

    Loved Delta having worked for them for years. Only time I was terrified was on approach to land in San Diego. It was smooth sailing until suddenly we shot straight up in the sky. Lol, the pilots were so calm and just told us they were going to try to land again. Never knew what happened, just grateful we were all safe

    i was once on a flight where they had to shut off the engines and restart them 2-3 times. I remember the pilot saying something like, "folks, we're going to restart the engines and glide down a few thousand feet. It's normal procedure." A flight on TWA, summer 1985.

    This may have been from decades ago but I was on edge watching the video. Thankfully the plane made a successful landing. The captain and his assistants did a great job. "Skilful and competent" in handling the aircraft during an event that could easily have ended in tragedy.
    It's also comforting to know that lessons were learned, with changes and improvements made to aircrafts to prevent something similar from re-occurring. We owe it to all those people from decades ago who helped make aircrafts what they are now.

    That was some fine piloting. I remember this incident. The #2 engine on the L-1011 had a slight downward angle which helped lower the nose when the thrust was increased on that engine.

    Well trained pilots, usually in these videos you see at least one screw up. Not here, the captain, first officer and even the flight engineer were heroes on this flight and got the plane safely on the ground. I hope the passengers thanked their pilots when they landed at LAX.

    • @watershed44
      @watershed44 5 лет назад +3

      The Cohesive Garage
      Indeed, I just cannot believe this untrained baggage guy could pull those stunts off. MAYBE fly the plane sure, but the acrobatics while in the actual pilots seat with the g forces and other stresses on him?
      Not the same at all as any regular video game. You'd at least have to train in a real flight simulator for many many weeks, he didn't do that.
      The more I learn about this "story" the more I think it's fake news.

      MarioBit
      Even video games can't prepare an unskilled person such as this to perform such complicated actions, remember you have g forces and many other factors involved. This story is fishy really.

    I know there are great pilots across Airlines. I will say that I prefer Delta because of the Military experience. I once walked away from a Jet Blue Flight when I saw how young the crew was. Unfortunately, that flight crashed with oxygen tanks. I can only say I was glad I was such a jerk and took the later Delta flight. Outstanding piloting from this man and crew!
