The Maytag engineers that designed this agitator configuration must have never ever, in their life lived as a kid or in a household with kids. This design begs the opportunity: ,,,,,,hey, i wonder how many objects, necklace chains, nails, coins, shirt sleeves, buttons, etc etc etc will be trapped as they slide back and forth over this slot while water drains out. HMMMMMM.....yeah, i would rate this design as "stupid as dirt". And to have to hammer drills, rust eater, vicegrips, airballoons and Gandalf's staff to get the agitator off. yeah, another example of stupid. Last maytag for me.

I tried boiling water, CLR, PB Blaster, citric acid, freeze-off, i took two tie downs and put under and attached to a 2x4 and did this over 3 days on and off, a shoe string, and nothing worked at all. I finally thought why am i going through all this work and it's only $26 for a new washplate on Amazon. So I ordered a new one and took the hammer to it. Even getting the few pieces stuck to the gear was a huge pain. It was like it was welded on. There was no way this was coming off any other way. Only wish I would have done it earlier.

A tip for removing the wash plate. Once i removed the bolt, I sprayed that area with a little wd40. I tried the shoestring method, to no avail. I decided to grab my harbor freight gloves that have a rubberized coating on them, to wrap the shoestring around my fingers to assist in pulling up. That failed. For some reason I grabbed two of the fins and accidentally pulled the wash plate straight up and out lol. The shoestring would have never worked because I pulled it too much to one side (to keep it from slipping out) that it was wedged under the drive pump plate.
I think by reading about the problems people had, I was expecting for it to be very difficult, so I didn't start with the easiest method. So don't be like me... try the easier, less forceful way first. 😂

Hello. OK, FOllow the bouncing ball here, this is not that difficult. FIrt, remember the splines that connect the wash plate to the transmission are tapered! Prying up on ANY side of the plate only makes things worse since it pinches the splines together and all manner of yankiing on the edges simply tightens the two splines even more! Here is the best way that worked perectly for me: First, once you remove the center bolt, pour either heated white vinegar or a good spray of BLASTER around the bolt hole making certain it gets into the splie area. Let that soak in for at least an hour. Next, gently tap all around the center collar of the plate including tapping both sides of each impeller vane. NOT TOO HARD, just enough to break any corrosion between the two splie parts...make and female. Probably should NOT hit down onto where the bolt was...that will only further jam the splines together. Not doo. Now, take a GOOD pair of channel locks, tightly grip anywhere around the top edge of the bolt collar (the raised circle that surrounds the bolt), and yank up. Voila, it should come right out but make certain you pull it STRAIGHT UP and not torqued to one side of the other. All the other methods only worked againsT you. And when you are ready to replace the impeller or wash plate, make certain you take a good brass brush and clean out the splines as much as you can to remove any loose corrosion. Take a tooth brush soaked in blaster or WD40 to clean out the inside of the plate spines. Then, coat both splines with a good Anti Seize lubricant (Permatex is a good choice in the gray tube). Replace the wash plate or agitator and exercise up and down gently to evenly better distribute the lubricant. You are done. Relplace the bolt with the BLUE Lock Tite lubricant. Now if you need to remove it at a future date, repeating the above provess will allow the plate to be removed easily if even you need to do that. And no, the lube will not stain your clothes. It is fully encapsulated by the tight fit of the two splices. Enjoy.. Dr. Z (Lou)

This does work, thank you. Before I attempted this I ran a quick wash cycle with hot water only and 1 cup of citric acid. I bought the spring pullers on Amazon. I had to lay it against the concrete and smack it with a hammer to thin out the hook part so it would slip in between the agitator and the barrel. I got two screwdrivers in and tugged on the third portion of the agitator. I also tapped the center/shaft periodically with the rubber mallet. I think I read a comment saying there has to be another way. There might be, but this does work for about 8 bucks..

For the life of me, I cannot get this plastic agitator plate off my Whirlpool WTW5000DW. I removed the 7/16” nut completely and used vice grips to try and pull it up to no avail. I almost wonder if there is some other screw somewhere holding it in since it is so stubborn. I’ve gotten the back of my hammer underneath the lip of it to pry it open and it just cracked the plastic. This thing is either insanely fused on or there is some other screw holding on to it. Tried WD-40 and that didn’t make a dent on it at all.

I figured that the strong back and forth movement during the wash cycle should loosen it. So I loosened the pulsator screw (not remove it) just a bit, put it through the wash cycle a few times, then finally removing the screw and presto, the pulsator plate floated right off the base. One clue that it’s ready to come off is when you hear a knocking noise during wash cycle.

I call b.s. I'm about to get my 2 ton engine hoist to rip that sucker out. I had a steel cable threaded under the wash plate. Was pulling the tub up into the top of the housing. Smacked it a rubber mallet, and knocked holes in the stupid thing.

I just used a tap to thread the agitator and ran a bolt down it to push the agitator off

@@jbishop4581 . I ended up breaking the pulsator off. Had to cut 2 deep groves, across from each other, in the metal hub that has the splines that fit over the shaft. And then chiseled it off. I was through messing around. Lol.

Some one made a comment another video placing little larger screws into the holes and let them stick out from 180 from each other. Use two pliers and pull straight up and it worked for me.

I’m having trouble getting the screw out of the washer. The whole tub spins. Any suggestions?

I had same issues using a ratchet and socket. Threw the socket on impact drill and it took it right out

Have someone hold the tub and use two hands on a big socket wrench

I used a nylon strap from a cargo ratchet strap binder. Came right off.

Why would the wash plate need replacement?

Things get stuck underneath them. Currently watching this because there’s a pillow case stuck under mine somehow.

These washers will stop agitating the clothes. So the wash plate basically has little teeth in the center that strip after time. I mean not a lot of time either. I have had this washer for 3 years and had to replace it twice. Very poorly made.

And mine hasn’t had anything underneath them either time. I guess it would make me feel better if it were something but it’s nothing to make it do this. Just not a quality washer in my opinion

All that you need to do is in the center where you took screw out. Get a set of plyers and pull up. The part where the 3 ridges meet in the middle.

@humbuckerUSA I've done it all 3 times that I cleaned under the lid 🤷🏻‍♂️. Take screw out, pliers and pull straight up.
