He also replaced Ozzy in Black Sabbath for a couple of very good albums. The band that brought him to the attention of Blackmore when his band Elf was opening for Deep Purple. Definitely difficult to say who is the greatest because it's even difficult to classify heavy metal or simply Hard Rock. Deep Purple, Scorpions, Iron Maiden, can all easily be contenders for great singers in the metal category. When you cross that gray area into rock and a hard rock there is definitely many more singers that could arguably be the greatest.
One thing that I will say is the late 60s through the early 80s was a fantastic time for music.

A little Dio history: He grew up listening to opera singers like Mario Lanza and played trumpet early. While in high school, he joined a band, the Vegas Kings, in 1958, and played trumpet. Soon he became the lead singer and played the bass. His band went through several names over the years. He started out singing doo wop, blues rock, and rock covers. Check out Ronnie and the Prophets with Love Potion #9 (cover). By the 70s, his band Elf were opening for Deep Purple. Try Nevermore from their first album. Once he joined Richie Blackmore's Rainbow, the songs became harder rock and proto-metal. I'll let others tell you about his progression as a metal singer after that. Enjoy!

Ronnie James Dio is Italian-American... he was raised Catholic, and that upbringing gave him a very negative view about religion... That was a huge part of his lyrics. He actually started singing as a teen in the late 1950's and was making R&B/ do-wop records in the 60's. He started a rock band called The Electric Elves, and after hearing Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath... he renamed the band Elf (Ronnie was a short fella!) and played hard rock in the early 70's.
In 1975, Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore recruited Ronnie James Dio as the singer of a new band Rainbow (the first album featured members of Elf) and that was his first taste of fame... But after 3 albums, Dio was axed in favor of a pop rock singer for Rainbow.
In 1980, Ronnie Dio was announced as the new singer of Black Sabbath, replacing Ozzy Osbourne... his musical identity solidified because Sabbath wanted to go darker and heavier... and he did too, bringing Black Sabbath commercial success again. However, he was out of the band by 1982 after 2 albums... Vinny Appice was the Sabbath drummer at the time, and he went w/ Ronnie to form Dio in 1983.
Dio wanted to work w/ an British guitarist, so he picked Irish axeman Vivian Campbell and former Rainbow bassist Jimmy Bain for the band Dio... Their debut album 'Holy Diver' (1983) was a success out the gate... 'Rainbow in the dark' was its standout single, along w/ the song 'Holy Diver'... 2nd album 'The Last in Line' was even bigger in 1984... but after the 3rd album 'Sacred heart' (1985), Vivian Campbell left the band (he's currently the guitarist of Def Leppard) and Craig Goldy (guitar) joined... but Dio never recovered his commercial success.
With 2 more Dio albums failing to sell up to expectations ('Dream evil' in 1987... 'Lock up the wolves' in 1990), Ronnie reconnected w/ members of Black Sabbath and opted to reunite in 1992 for the 'Dehumanizer' album... However, Ronnie quit in 1993 because he refused to open for Ozzy Osbourne. Ronnie reformed Dio in 1993 and released 'Strange highways'... but 90's grunge rock decimated the popularity of heavy metal... and this live clip was shot on that tour w/ Tracy G (guitar), Jeff Pilson (bass), Vinny Appice (drums) and Scott Warren (keyboards).
Dio carried on making records into 2000 and then Ronnie reconciled w/ Tony Iommi (guitar) and Geezer Butler (bass) of Black Sabbath again in 2006 and reformed the band as Heaven and Hell. They recorded 1 album 'The devil you know' in 2009 before Ronnie James Dio passed away from cancer in 2010 (R.I.P.)
Dio songs - 'Holy Diver'... 'The last in line'... 'All the fools sailed away'... 'Rock n roll children'... 'Hey angel'... 'Fever dreams'... 'Killing the dragon'
Black Sabbath (Dio era) songs - 'Heaven and hell'... 'Computer God'... 'Sign of the southern cross'... 'Children of the sea'
Rainbow (Dio era) songs - 'Stargazer'... 'Gates of Babylon'... 'Catch the rainbow'... 'Man on the silver mountain'... 🤘🤘🔥🔥

I met Dio in person. Songwriter symposium years ago in Long Beach or thereabout. Nice guy.
Refused to speak poorly of anyone, at least to a fan wearing a Dio t-shirt.
    Anyway.
Maybe I'll catch hell from the other Dio fans here, but Mistreated is and was a song David Coverdale wrote with Ritchie Blackmore and Deep Purple performed on their albums Burn, Made in Europe, and Last Concert in Japan. Great as Dio is as a singer? And he is? David's version of Mistreated is the definitive version. Dio doesn't have David's soulful bluesy delivery. Sorry Ronnie.
    Also.
I would have said start your Dio journey with Rainbow, and not necessarily just Stargazer, even though it's a great song.
Kill The King would have been my first choice from Rainbow On Stage. Back when Jimmy Bain was still playing bass and Tony Carey was still on keyboards.
I love every song on Long Live Rock and Roll so that'd be next but😮 Rainbow Rising has great songs too.
I would also have suggested Man On The Silver Mountain also from On Stage. The studio version on the Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow album feels different because the original version of Rainbow was actually Elf with Ritchie Blackmore on guitar.
Ronnie was very loyal to Elf, and he would not join forces with Ritchie Blackmore unless Ronnie's band Elf could become Rainbow.
Ritchie wanted Ronnie, so he caved in.
(So saying Ronnie joined Rainbow is actually not correct.
Ritchie Blackmore had left Deep Purple and was forming a band together with Ronnie James Dio. Hence why Elf was the band on the Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow album.)
Ritchie also hated Elf as his backing band and fired all of them except RJD for Rainbow Rising.
So, On Stage features the version of Rainbow on Rising: Cozy Powell on drums, Tony Carey on keyboards (he had a hit later with his next group Planet P and their song Why Me which Tony sang lead vocals on), Jimmy Bain on bass, and Ritchie on guitar and Ronnie on vocals. The only two complete albums the Rising version of Rainbow played on.
Long Live Rock and Roll dropped next, and there's a live album connected with it, but, good as bassist Bob Daisley and keybardist David Stone are? The Rising band from On Stage sound way better.
Ironically? Bob and David are pictured on the cover of Long Live Rock and Roll, but I believe the Rising version of Rainbow recorded more than half the songs on that album. I think Bob and David only played/recorded like 2 tracks.
    The funny thing is?
Kill The King actually made its debut on On Stage and was on Long Live Rock and Roll afterwards.
Usually bands do a studio version then the live version. Not Rainbow.
Then after you sample Rainbow, definitely check out Ronnie's tenure in Black Sabbath, after Rainbow but before his solo band, Dio.
Heaven And Hell is a great album with pretty much no bad songs on it.
The Mob Rules is also excellent with few if any duds. I also liked Dehumanizer by Black Sabbath with Ronnie back in the fold after leaving to form Dio.
(They eventually changed their name to Heaven and Hell when recording and touring with RJD because Ozzy rejoined Sabbath and they didn't want to confuse the fans.
Black Sabbath were occasionally mocked as Blackmore Sabbath while Ronnie was in the band, because they sounded more like Rainbow and less like Sabbath with Ronnie singing.)
Then I would check out Dio's Holy Diver album, and start with the song Holy Diver. Then check out the follow up The Last in Line and check out that song and We Rock, and maybe even check out Sacred Heart, also a great album and song, and try the album Dream Evil.
(That song vied with Dokken's hit Dream Warriors for the prime spot in the 3rd Freddy Krueger movie. Dokken won that battle but Dio's Dream Evil was a close contender.)
Rainbow in the Dark by Dio is a good song. Don't get me wrong.
As with my suggestions for how I would have had you start your Cinderella journey?
I wouldn't have started your Dio journey here.
    But.
    That's just me.
(And actually? I believe the last version of Dio featured Doug Aldrich on guitar, Rudy Sarzo on bass, and Simon Wright from AC/DC on drums.
    And Ronnie looked older.
And was. Vinnie Appice is still on drums here, so this isn't all that old.
Needed to clear that up. Vinnie was on Sabbath's The Mob Rules because Bill Ward quit after recording Heaven and Hell because he missed Ozzy. So Vinnie was the drummer for the Heaven and Hell version of Black Sabbath.)
    Also.
    Do you intentionally bleep yourself?
I don't mind the swears myself but I'm a 62 year old dude...just saying. Do you intentionally self censor? It seems a bit silly. Sorry. Unnecessary? Yeah. That. Don't be afraid, my dude.
    Also.
Dio was a New Yorker. Born in New Hampshire but raised in Cortland New York.
His favorite guitarists were British however. (Ritchie Blackmore, Tony Iommi) or Irish like Vivian Campbell, so Ronnie's other guitarists tended to at least have to sound European. Like, he didn't hire Jake E. Lee because Jake sounded too L.A. to Ronnie. Doug Aldrich could play Blackmore perfectly so he was an easy fit.
I don't recognize the guitarist here. It looks like maybe Jeff Pilson on bass but I don't recognize the guitarist. Not Rowan Robertson from Lock Up the Wolves and not Craig Goldy either.
I did see Dio live with Vivian Campbell on the Last in Line tour and on Sacred Heart with Viv as well. The battle with the dragon on stage. Also with Craig Goldy after Viv left. Anyway.

Funny story about this track, (maybe someone has already mentioned it,) Ronnie thought this song was a bit too "pop" when he composed and recorded it for his first solo album, "Holy Diver", he wanted to take a razor blade to the master tape but his band mates talked him out of doing that, saying he was mad and it was a brilliant track; it became his biggest major radio single.

Welcome to the cult 😁. When Ronnie James Dio sings, he reads you a book and immerses you in the story. I’m a huge fantasy lover and his lyrics almost always have some kind of message embedded in a fantasy story.
Great reaction again and look forward to your next video! Btw you probably have heard Dio way before that Tenacious D song : remember ‘Love is all’ by Roger Glover? That animated video from the 70s with the frog playing guitar ? That song is sung by Ronnie.

One thing I'd very much like to see you doing a reaction to is a Romanian band called Bucovina and their song "Așteaptă-mă dincolo de moarte" (Wait for me on the other side of death).
The band dedicated this song to their good friend Adrian Ruginâ (June 18 1977-October 30 2015) who tragically died while running in and out trying to save other Metal heads from the burning Club Colectiv in Bucharest Romania on October 30 2015, the blaze ending up claiming 64 lives (including Adrian) and 184 people injured out of which 146 people needing urgent medical care due to severe burns.
    R.I.P Adrian.

I wouls certainly recommend Mistreated (Live 1977 Munich) with the band Rainbow and anything from the Black Sabbath Albums Heaven & Hell or The Mob Rules. The man had THE most remarkable voice with very little traiing. Used to be a trumpet player so I guess that's where his breath control. Mistreated is a song by deep purple with Ritchie Blackmore on guitar and David Coverdale on vocals and Glenn Hughes on bass and vocals. Ritchie Blackmore left deep purple to form a band with DIO Rainbow. So yes do Rainbow mistreated live in Munich 1977. In a separate reaction to deep purple mistreated live 1974 at the California jam. When he was in Rainbow (the band Deep Purple original guitarist Ritchie Blackmore founded after Deep Purple) he made some classic masterpieces like "Stargazer", "Gates of Babylon", "Long Live Rock 'n' Roll", "Tarot Woman", "Catch the Rainbow" and lots more.
