I suggest Blue (medium hold) Loctite or similar threadlocker on the set screws. Mine have came loose three times in one year. Hoping this is the last time I have to tighten the screws.
I've had the same problem with the shifter coming loose - even with loctite. Pretty annoying. How'd you remedy it? I tightened the hell out of my set screws and they still won't hold for very long.
Hi Paul, I recommend using that bone tool you used to remove the old boot as a faster way to get the inner ring clips out. I was having issues trying push the clips out directly, so I just dug the bone tool in between the chrom and inner ring, and then pushed the frame inwards to get the clips out.Took care of it really fast and no broken frames.
Paul I realize you used the BFI boot instead of the original in order to save the original one. However, considering the difficulty of removing the plastic ring from inside the factory boot (and the chance of breaking it) and how difficult it will certainly be to reinstall the ring in the factory boot (one would need to obtain adhesive of some sort), wouldn'y you say one would be better off just using the factory boot along with the BFI knob? Otherwise, thank you for the instructions! -Ken
MisterWannabee lm curious as well, especially considering is the same exact leather type boots rather than switching to something like an Alcantara. Well I think it may be, and I can’t tell from the video and I wish I knew, is that a new boot must be shorter and have less slack
Very excited to get my shift boot in, except they improperly sent me a DSG boot instead of the manual 😕 almost a month of waiting for the wrong product
Yeaaaaaah I'll just be swapping my knob into the factory boot. I'd rather fuck up the stock retainer ring for the shifter than deal with that headach of separating the boot from the retainer
Thanks for this. As usual, very clear and helpful. Question: My foam boot that's at the bottom of the shifter shaft has ripped. It's pretty much torn in half. Does that matter? Cheers!
Ever get an answer on this? I was wondering which one matches tornado red on a gti, i have the magma ordered but the rosso looks more similar, actually.
are you sure that's the magma one. The magma one on the website looks more like maroon, burgundy, darker red. the rose one is more similar to the one on this video.
Can you DIY on jetta 2017 mk6 2.0l non turbo of anything (engine, maintenece, big brake kit, transmission maintenence automatic 6 speed not a dsg, or anything) :'( great vid as allways
Is there some place to get the black boot retainer? I want to get a BFI shifter and a Clark Plaid boot but I want to keep my stock shifter and boot intact.
Another vote for the DSG install. When I had to pull the center console apart in my wife's MK7 R (to install a DoubleApex garage door opener) that chrome ring that boot is attached to doesn't separate from the rest of that center piece. It turned out that center piece was quite a bit different in the DSG MK7 R then it was in the manual GTI that they used for their testing, they ended up having to revise the instructions for the installation.
I found a chinese knockoff entire shift knob and boot on ebay for 23 bucks. I bought it to see what it looks like and if it looks ok I may buy the BFI knob and put it on that as opposed to destroying my stock boot and knob.......
It’s seems super hard and like I’ll probably be screaming in my garage at the top of my lungs but it does look a lot better than stock, in fact every time I see it with stock boot the boot is ugly pinched, too big and funky looking. As much as I feel like this will make my life hell and scare my wife and kids when I’m screaming and I’ll probably end up having to buy a whole new ring thingie I definitely want it.
This looks really annoying and too much work, I just did it and if you have the right tools and be patients it's actually kinda fun. It's much easier than you'd think, just do it
Hey Paul, I enjoy the videos but it seems like you’ve lost a little enthusiasm. I don’t know if it’s because you’re tired of MK7 DIYs or just in general. I want to keep getting quality videos, so if you have to change projects to that AUDI or any other vehicle you had in mind
Thanks for the feedback. It was pretty late at night when shooting this video which is why you see less energy. I'll try to make sure i get more rest in the future ; ). We will have some other projects coming so stay tuned.
This looks like such a tedious install for the price of these shifters. Why not just include the entire trim piece and make everyone's life easier? make a simple and direct unplug and plug swap. If you break the trim in the process, you're fucked until you order a new set. Kind of turns me off all together on these.
Check out all of our shifter options HERE! - www.shopdap.com/make-model-year/volkswagen/gti/mk7-2015-present/interior/shifter.html
Thank you for the video, this made me realize that I don’t want to bother replacing the boot.
my thoughts exactly
You are the bob ross of gtis
I wish I could paint some happy trees
Video title should be vw doesn't want you you to change the shift knob
Kit should just come with that black trim ring.
Jason Cole for how much it cost yea
I want to do this but it seems like a meticulous pain in the ass
You don't need the BFI boot. I reused the factory boot and it looks/works just fine.
This is meticulous, but you need the practice if you think it's a PITA. Consider getting one and be happy.

God damn! That was an epic battle. Congrats on winning.

Do you have a video replacing the knob in a DSG ?
Very excited to get my shift boot in, except they improperly sent me a DSG boot instead of the manual 😕 almost a month of waiting for the wrong product
Yeaaaaaah I'll just be swapping my knob into the factory boot. I'd rather fuck up the stock retainer ring for the shifter than deal with that headach of separating the boot from the retainer
Yea just skip the hardest part of the install. Good one
What’s the hardest part?
Does anyone know what the threading of the BFI knob is?
Don't you mean separate Das Boot?
Thanks for this. As usual, very clear and helpful. Question: My foam boot that's at the bottom of the shifter shaft has ripped. It's pretty much torn in half. Does that matter? Cheers!
I soaked mine in hot water and it came off very easy. I'll try and post an update.
update?
Is this the magma forsure or rosso red, seems pretty bright
Ever get an answer on this? I was wondering which one matches tornado red on a gti, i have the magma ordered but the rosso looks more similar, actually.
Does anyone sell the metal trim surrounding the boot? Mine is peeling on the upper left, and is sharp!
Is this the same process for mk7 1.4 Jetta ?
yes
Can you change the height of the OEM shifter? I'm guessing you can, right? Thanks.
Can u make one for the dsg
chris huntly no
Since dont staple in the new shift boot, what do you use ? Tape?
My boot was stapled in 11 places! Took about half hour to unpick them!
are you sure that's the magma one. The magma one on the website looks more like maroon, burgundy, darker red. the rose one is more similar to the one on this video.
Extremely helpful. Thank you
Enjoy your videos, but seems like a lot of potential for broken parts for such a small mod. But still, keep the videos coming :)
Is it works on MK7 golf tsi 1.4T MT?
Can you DIY on jetta 2017 mk6 2.0l non turbo of anything (engine, maintenece, big brake kit, transmission maintenence automatic 6 speed not a dsg, or anything) :'( great vid as allways

You could have showed more of the shift knob... cool video
I wish car manufacturers would just sell the damn shift boot frames
MAGMA!
Is there anywhere to purchase that chrome trim piece that you took off?
Only with the shift knob and boot
I found a chinese knockoff entire shift knob and boot on ebay for 23 bucks. I bought it to see what it looks like and if it looks ok I may buy the BFI knob and put it on that as opposed to destroying my stock boot and knob.......
rjjii1980 any update on that? Was thinking of maybe doing the same thing.
Oliver Macdonald I’m happy with it to date, it turned out nice.
Does anybody sell the actual base. Mine chipped were the metal trim faces the back of the shifter?
Janson Murphy unfortunately it’s almost as much as the stock replacement
It’s seems super hard and like I’ll probably be screaming in my garage at the top of my lungs but it does look a lot better than stock, in fact every time I see it with stock boot the boot is ugly pinched, too big and funky looking. As much as I feel like this will make my life hell and scare my wife and kids when I’m screaming and I’ll probably end up having to buy a whole new ring thingie I definitely want it.
Also, I’d just cut everything off in the first place and fuck it if I sell the car someone gets this bad ass shift knob n boot 🤷♂️
is this possible on a mk5 ?
Yes the same one applies to for that model as well. Are you looking for a boot as well?
Yes everything if possible but I'm confused on how the thread system works
@@epicx1038 no threads on a vw shift knob. the orginal only uses that clamp. aftermarket ones use grub set screws. but no threads on the shaft itself
Anyone know the Allen key size
2.5mm
It seems way more difficult than it should be.
This looks really annoying and too much work, I just did it and if you have the right tools and be patients it's actually kinda fun. It's much easier than you'd think, just do it
all the diy ;s are for manual only. I need a dsg video

I will good luck Paul 😁
Is this fit to Touran 2019?

I want this shift knob but this just seems like a pain in the ass. Why can't VW just make the damn knob screw off like everyone else? Sigh.......
This seems like a giant pain in the ass. Easier to just reuse the Vw boot and replace the knob. I just did that and it was soooo much easier than this
The stock Original shift knob is 100 x better bro -_-
wtf omg # RICERTuning It's just common in USA in EU here nobody do that o__0
It's cause you ppl aren't smart enough to figure this out. Plus you're lazy.
Yeah, agreed. The original is better.
MAGMA!
