I agree! More top tens. Mario's and Zelda for sure but also I really respect your taste/focus on some video games that mainstream doesn't mention often. So top ten of those too.
Resident Evil 2 (1998) is nostalgic for me as well. I remember the game had just came out, my cousin and I were at the mall food court eating Sabbaro's pizza and right across the food court was Babbage's. We put our money together, get it from the shelf and go to pay for it and the clerk asks for an ID, we didn't even think about that, at the time I was 8 and my cousin was 11. Luckily our grandma had taken us there so we found her and gave her the money and she got it. We got home that night and played it until 4am. What great memories. Now everyone has passed on, and I haven't really seen or talked to my cousin in a long time.
I totally agree with Johnny about the Dreamcast having “arcade” graphics. I remember playing Marvel vs Capcom 2 on my buddies Dreamcast back in the day and our minds were blown away.
Agreed. Dreamcast really had a mind blowing intro with games like Crazy Taxi, Ready 2 Rumble and Sonic. By no means my favorite games or the most replayable but the presentation and arcade quality was super impressive. The controller was fucking horrible but you dealt with it. Its too bad the console died so quickly.
I remember loving Soul Calibur at the arcade and when somebody told me it was on a console and even better looking, I didn't believe them. I even thought some of the screenshots of Dreamcast games were fake at first (as fake CG pics were popular on the internet at that time). But then I realized it was real and even better than I imagined. The Dreamcast is my all-time favorite console as it just did everything right at the time. So many great games... and yes, I did have and enjoy RE Code Veronica and it was actually the first RE game I purchased (although I had played the other ones at friend's houses).
Absolutely love Resi 2 and the remake for it is great as well. Code Veronica was the first game I bought for our PS2 and loved it despite it being quite hard. Had to restart Code Veronica when I got to the plane section and didn't have enough ammo to kill the baddie 🤣 Hated Resi 3 on PS1 as Nemesis was so annoying and I gave up on it and sold it. Twenty years later I eventually completed Resi 3 on Dreamcast in 2019 when I bought my first Dreamcast and 20 years later I loved it.
It's funny because RE5 was my introduction to the series and I still love it. It's not my favorite in the series but it'll always have a special place in my heart
I felt 5 was pretty decent when it came out, as somebody who has been with RE since the original PS1's debut in 96', IF, you played the XBOX360 version. the PS3 port had Blurry/soft visuals and washed out contrast. They completely butchered that version. If they had stuck with RE5's original template, and Mikami didn't jump ship it would of been so much better. No Shieva, the Majini Enemies were all pretty much african american, they also used the environment to their advantage and came at you in larger swarms AND heat played a roll where you were forced to replentish your stamina in the shade etc. Instead, what we got was Resident Evil meets Black Hawk Down. Still, RE5 is a godly when sided next to RE6. that one was a total disaster. Couldn't even finish it.
It's still a really good Co-op action game. The story is pretty awful and it doesn't feel anything like resident evil but the game play is still great.
The original will always be my fave. So simple and straightforward, and so nostalgic. Also love the cheesy dialogue and FMVs. Who doesn’t love a good Jill sandwich!?
Same here, OG 96 release will always be my favorite. I actually go the broken shotgun route so I can see Barry outside w/ Forrest and the other scenes with Barry. Haven't done a Jill sandwich route in a while.
Bought my Dreamcast back in the day for RE: Code Veronica. Graphics were crazy back then. Still one of my fav's and wish it would get the remake treatment.
I played through Code V only recently on the xbox one (original game is available on there) I'm currently replaying all the main series games. It's certainly unique. Far harder than the others, but satisfying and with great level design. Could do with a graphics update, but I like it.
@@pockets6794 everyone might hate me for this but i don’t know what made RE 4 so great that everyone can’t stop praising it. Honestly it didn’t look even scary to me and the gameplay was just ok. I might be nit picking but how the fuck do i take Leon seriously doing a roundhouse kick to knock down enemies? It doesn’t seem believable. Why didn’t they use a more believable melee attack. Like using the stock of your guns? Or even a punch or a front thrust kick
My favorite RE games are RE2 Remake, RE4 and RE1 Remake. I have fond memories of Code Veronica also. The new RE7 and 8 are up there, but not in my top 3.
@@drunkensailor112 cringe you don't understand the feel 4 is close to perfection. There isn't a better game from that era. Everything aside from story was perfect
Your channel is one of the best things on RUclips. It's the highlight of every Sunday and brings my thoughts to a better, kinder place if I'm bogged down by the minutiae of life. Even when the topic is survival horror, lol. We were all very fortunate to live when these games were new. Your enthusiasm for your topic is infectious and beats any other RUclipsr or university lecturer.
Exactly!! It was my favorite resident evil game. Me and my buddy would go back and perfect every level, get the crossbow and gating gun... unlocked every secret the game had. Lol
I’m 41 and I play RE from the very beginning. My list: 10. RE 6 09. RE 5 08. RE 3 07. RE 4 06. RE Code Veronica 05. RE Zero 04. RE Village O3. RE 7 02. RE 1 01. RE 2 I love the RE franchise! Great video guys!
I've been looking forward to this episode for so long. Thank you. It is hard for me to decide whether I like Resident Evil 2, or Resident Evil 2 Remake as the best in the series.
Yeah, that's a tough one. I love both versions so much. It isn't like the original game and it's remake, where most would consider the remake to be the superior game and the definitive RE1 experience. The remake of 2 was a similar, but also different experience to the original. They're both great in their own ways. But, I think I would pick the original Resident Evil 2 as my favorite. I think it slightly edges out the remake for me due to nostalgia.
I can't believe Resident Evil 1 is so low! It's one of my favourite games of all time! It was brilliant. I'd never played anything like it at the time and still remember jumping out of my seat at the dogs smashing through the window. Resident evil 1 is an all time classic and I won't hear anything bad said about it.
The game was honestly ahead of its time. It has so many layers. Mansion, garden, sewer, cave, lab. It never ended. Amazing at that time. Also two playable characters
Yeah, 7 just had more up close horror abs gore. It’s amazing. I’m playing RE3 remake right now. And this is turning out to be up there for me as well. Great graphics!
I absolutely love RE7, I think it's a masterpiece, been putting off 8 but will give it a go soon, it's a shame that the consensus seems to be that it isn't as good as 7.
What’s funny is at the start of this video I thought “there is no way these guys don’t pick 2 as the GOAT”. I fully agree. It’s the one that legitimized the genre and that is where all my nostalgia for the series lives. Awesome video!
@@MorrisseyMuse exactly. People will shit on re4 all day but completely ignore how RE2 had you walking into rooms and using 50 shots on a dozen zombies lmao. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it’s very hypocritical to see people say that.
Resident Evil 6 took me 2 full playthroughs to fully appericate. The mechanics are amazing once you master it. The game shines in it's extra modes such as mercenaries, onslaught and survivors. The campaign is not well made but fun to play, especially when you've mastered it's controls which takes a lot of time and dedication.
I happened to have came across a PDF a fan had made of the "advanced mechanics" of RE6 before I played it which let me know about things like the dolphin dive. Thats really what let me enjoy RE6, as a pure action game ignoring the horror roots I was having so much fun dolphin diving around and doing german suplex's on zombies. I was so happy whenever I got to swap character since I could see another melee/suplex animation.
RE6 grew on me with repeated plays, I agree. I mean don't get me wrong, it's just not a good Resident Evil game but it's a fun enough action game if you take it on its own merits. The way all the stories branch off around a core common story is really interesting and I found it enjoyable overall. Not great by any means but definitely decent.
17:03 Actually in RE3 you do go into the police station within the first 30 minutes of the game. Leon is also mentioned in the epilogue after you beat the game, leading up to the events of RE4.
Yeah that was weird that he said that. Makes u wonder how much of a resident evil fan was he because I specifically remember Jill and brad confronting Nemesis in front of the police station right before she went inside. They even had the police station in the remake of resident evil 3
@@nirvanaCNG Yeah he probably played the game once years ago and forgot about it. Not a big deal but I wanted to point it out for people who have not played RE3 yet. I also thought it was weird at 26:08 , he says that the remake is so good but I heard that the remake is missing a lot of content from the original.
@@Girth. they took out the clock tower part which was a pretty big deal since it was my favorite part. RE3 remake wasn’t that memorable to me compared to RE2 remake
Also found it weird that he referred to Nemesis as being unkillable and following you from room to room nonstop... There were only a small handful or scripted events that he'd actually go through doors to follow you, and a huge part of the strategy in this game was deciding whether or not you wanted to run or fight him for special rewards at each encounter when you "kill" him 🤷♂️
Great episode! I'm personally not a fan of the newer resident evil games myself, but I'm happy the series is still going and for all the people that do enjoy them! I want to see a modern take on the old formula, tank controls and all! I can only imagine how incredible the pre-rendered backgrounds would look nowadays. If only...
Nope. You will continue to fight witches, warlock, vampires, and werewolves with faceless Ethan Winters and his forgettable GF Mia entry after entry from here on out.
I liked Resident Evil 7 on PS4 Pro because it offered PSVR support and with a pair of headphones on made the game even more immersive. Have never fell scared with any of the Resident Evil games but in VR number 7 got me so many times. Cannot what for the PlayStation 5 free upgrade which will also likely get PSVR 2 support once the new headset comes out. #ResidentEvil7 #PSVR #Capcom #Sony #PSVR #Playstation4 #Playstation5 #PSVR2
Always love an HCG video. Jonny + Rob automatically bumps it up another point. A whole Resident Evil ranking over 30 minutes long is +100 more points. This is a nice way to end a long day of work and relax before getting back to it. God Bless.
" I totally agree with Johnny about the Dreamcast having “arcade” graphics" 100% I always felt that way and still do when playing Dreamcast games. Now my favorite is RE2 ; )
I’ve never commented on a RUclips video before but I just gotta say I’ve been watching Johnny and Rob for close to a god damn decade and I just want to say THANK YOU!!
12:20 "The fact that almost all of it was one of those escort missions" I have to object here Rob XD. This statement actually made me look up a 7.5 hour full walkthrough of Resident Evil 4 and I made some stats of how much of the game is Leon on his own vs Leon with Ashley. The longest segment in the game where you escort Ashley is from the chapter when you first meet. That part is around 1 hour give or take which route you choose to take. Then she get caught, you meet up and she gets caught multiple times throughout. The time you spend with her only make up around 25% of the game or 1h and 48 minutes in a 7.5 hour playthrough with 10 minutes of that being the segment you play as her. That leaves 4 hours and 53 minutes in the run where you're on your own as Leon with the rest being cutscenes.
RE4 is a masterpiece, even when you beat adas small campaign and leons normal and professional campaign, you get introduced to new guns and suits, like leons 80s outfit and when you get to Ashley she has a fully armored knight outfit which she cant die in at all even when bad guys try and pick her up, they drop her almost immediately. Idk to me its a masterpiece for many reasons.
Same here. No other Res evil game comes close to the evil 1 remake. Maybe 2 and 3. But the first res evil (remake) is hands down one of if not the best games.
I loves code Veronica, didn't have a dreamcast back in the day but got it on the ps2. Have to say I think RE2 is my no1 as well and the remake of 2 is excellent
RE5 is an incredible game. I'd, hands down, put it in the Top 5. There's a reason it was well received (87/100 Metacritic, 9.3/10 IGN, 9/10 on Steam) and became (both) the fastest selling, and *best selling,* RE game of all time (to this day). (The RE2 & RE3 remakes wouldn't even rank. Although the RE2 one was ok.) 1, Resident Evil 4 2, Resident Evil Remake (GameCube then later remastered for PS3) 3, Resident Evil 2 (Original) 4, Resident Evil 5 5, Resident Evil 7 I didn't want to include the Original RE twice so I just went with the remake since it's the better option. For the record, the RE2 & 3 remakes were very lacking accept for graphics. Both were made with very small budgets, with a small team on tight deadlines, and were missing a lot of what was in the original games. The original RE3 wasn't even as good as the first 2 games and, at the time of the release, people were disappointed in it due to it being 6 hours long! That's like RE2 (1998) if you could only play one A Scenario and that's it! It's no wonder the original RE3 was made in just 1 year. And the Nemesis was a dumb/repeatitive enemy who annoyed everyone who played that game. RE Village was also seriously bad despite what people try to say about it. I know no one who actually liked it. It's far worse than 7, and 7 was even pretty bad in some areas. Some of it being laughable (due to how poorly done it was) and borderline cartoon-ish. I still consider that one a good game, overall, though. Just not as good as 1, 2, 4 or 5. Don't get me wrong, 5 had its issues but it was a seriously well made game with some of the best co-op out there to this day. Having beaten every RE game, the minute anyone tries to tell me RE5 was bad I immediately discount their opinions about games as being credible.
@@bill8856 Ohhh, ok. I accept that. I was just thinking of the main numbered games but the original version of Code Veronica was seriously good. Definitely worthy of replacing 7. Possibly 5, even...
RE4 is my favorite and in my personal top 20 gaming experiences of all time. It definitely has some weird issues such as the inventory system, the escort missions and the super zombies that was just irritating after a while plus some parts with infinitely spawning enemies on a timer. What I loved was the control scheme, the weapon variety, the cheesiness of Leon, the area variety and the epic boss fights.
@@alwillk That is a perfectly valid opinion. For me (even though I like RE 1-3 as well) RE4 put some new life into the series and graduated from the clunky controls and made the game more accessable and modern to a degree. RE5 and RE6 definitely went to far and lost the horror part completely.
4 is my favorite, followed by 5, then prolly the original re2 coz its the first one I played. I think the blend of action and horror is what makes RE unique. I suppose re7 was a good reset in some ways but I hated Ethan and the backwoods setting was just not my thing. Village was much more fun even though Ethan being a clueless normie boy most of the time was still aggravating.
The game that really got me into the series was RE revelations. I never and still to some degree like to be scared but revelations did it in such a way that it would hit you then you'd overcome whatever it was and then feel empowered because of it. Also have you guys played or heard of the resident evil boardgames that steamforged games made? They're a great representation of the games with tension and lots of stabbing zombies to conserve ammo.
Resident Evil 7 and 8 would have to be my favorites. They were unbelievable, near-perfect horror experiences to me. The first-person perspective made it so much more intense. 7 truly scared the shit out of me on numerous occasions.
Instant click cause I love RE. Now time to get triggered when they hate on RE4 and 5. EDIT: Since they asked about our fav games, REmake1>RE4>REmake2>RE5>Code Veronica>Outbreak1>RE1>RE2>RE3>REmake3>RE0>RE7 Also, I hate 6 too lol. Umbrella Chronicles was pretty fun but Darkside had terrible camera. Haven't played 8.
Id love to see you guys use this format with other franchises small and big. Both of you ranking games together and discussing your seperate opinions is just so cool i love it
Excellent video, guys! For me, the 2019 remake of Resident Evil 2 is number 1. It’s the absolute perfect remake & imo actually exceeds the original. I also love that they incorporated the original soundtrack & menu sound effects as an option…just a brilliant game all around!
Completely agree. My favorite RE game and my favorite game in recent years. I'll always have nostalgic memories of the original trilogy on ps1, but RE2 remake is so damn good.
What about if you say RE2 remake is well done (graphics) but the game itself and it’s format is too dated to allow the remake work in these modern times? That’s coming from a person who played the original and even replayed it and got the remake years later to only find nostalgia wasn’t enough
@@phillipcollins1103 it's your opinion but not the general consensus. It was nominated for most game of the year categories for a reason and it wasn't just nostalgia that did that. Most game remakes never reached that level of prestige prior to 2019.
My favorite from the old games is resident evil 1 and from the "recent" revelations 2. But from 1 till Code Veronica all of them are great. After re4 the games started to follow an action route that I don't like very much. Still resident evil will be will forever one of my favorite gaming experiences ever, great memories.
Resident Evil will always be my number one. I remember going to the video store in 1996 and picking out Resident Evil out for rent, having known nothing about it. I was blown away from the moment they escaped into the mansion, where they thought it was safe. I didn’t have a memory card, so every time I played it I had to start from the beginning. I had played it again on the ps1 a few years ago, after not having played the original for many years and I still had the mansion completely memorized. Just thinking about it right now, I would be able to make a layout of the mansion.
I remember my parents being uneasy with me wanting the game so much, but I finally annoyed them enough and they let me get it. RE1 was CRAZY for the time, it really did absolutely scare me shitless and gave me nightmares, but I couldn’t stop playing it. I was quite young at the time and I’m surprised I actually managed to finish it because at the time that game was so damn hard! But back in those days games were hard to come by because my parents didn’t have a lot of money, so the only thing I could do is grind it out, and man thinking back on those days, I loved it so much, even though I was constantly on the verge of full blown panic attacks at every moment while playing, hah!
For me it was a tie between 2 & 4 I started with 2 when i was 10 years old and was hooked ever since. But re4 remake i personally think is the best it took everything from 4 and made it better, darker and scarier it changed up the right aspects so i felt like i was still playing a new game but also playing re4 it was a good balance.
Ironically I've actually put a lot of time into RE6. Mechanically, it's a really fun shooter game. It's very engaging and the mercenaries wasn't bad. After RE4 the series became exactly what The Fast & Furious franchise became. It had good moments and visually wasn't an eyesore. The games linear path was a complete hindrance as well as the four separate campaigns. Making the game an actual grindfest. So if I'm being completely honest, RE6 is one of those games I put on for dumb fun and it's one of my guilty pleasures. I hate to admit it but I like the game. More so than I should.
Playing 6 right now!!!6 is awesome ....Like it better then 5 ....5 is great but 6 had the better gameplay....I love all Resident Games....All of them for there own thing.....If I had only one to pick 2 takes the win!!.....
I'm a newer fan just hopped on the band wagon with resident evil 7 And played 4 back in the day on the game cube/ps2 Here's my list of the game I've played 1.Re2 remake 2. Re7 3. Re8 4. Re4 5. R3 remake
Resident Evil 2 (N64) version and Resident Evil 4 (GameCube) version are my personal favorites. The first play through on each of these games was amazing and breathtaking.
The original RE2 will forever be my number one. Partially because of Nostalgia, but also because it's such a damn good game that still holds up, it's perfection. RE6 is easily the worst, but also a victim of the way the series went: With the storyline it HAD to be more action oriented. RE4 and 5 already moved from Horror towards shooters, and RE5 is unironically one of my favorite Co-Op games. RE6 had to be an action game for story reasons, but the story telling is also what ruins the game. Confusing, overly long, unsatisfying conclusions to plot lines.
@@guillegarcia7146 I'm referring to the story of the series as a whole. RE1 had the virus limited to a mansion, perfect for claustrophobic horror. RE2/3 expanded it to the entire city - still suitable for claustrophobic horror. But by RE4 and definitely with RE5 (and even C:V) it already turned into a worldwide crisis. They could've done a side story focusing on a regular person (like RE0 and RE7 basically were, or in some way, The Last of Us for an example outside the series), but if you want a conclusion to the story of this worldwide bio-weapon crisis, with Wesker and Chris and everyone else getting a story arc, Action is the only way that makes sense. The specific story and story telling of RE6 was bad, but I can't fault them for making it an action game after all the groundwork they laid over 6 prior games.
@@menhirmike but then again, the story of chris and wesker was over in re5, re4 didn't set up anything for leon, and jake is a new character. They decided to bring back the old characters to make an action game. They weren't forced by the story
Resident Evil Code Veronica was rumoured to be RE3. Capcom developed it for Dreamcast, but was contractually obligated for three mainline RE games on PlayStation. Mikami has said CV should be a numbered title and it makes more sense it should be 3; the games get progressively bigger in scope as they go, which makes the PS RE3 a little bit of an oddball story wise.
4 is awful compared to the rest of the series aside from the characters it strayed so far away from a survival horror into an arcade style shooting game a la house if the dead.
Amazing video guys. I would love to see you guys do this with other franchises. It would be so much fun. Love how you guys did your own list with disagreements. Makes the conversation so much more interesting.
I haven't played them all yet but so far it goes like this: 1. Resident Evil 2 (Both the original and the remake tbh) 2. Resident Evil 1 (REmake > original imo) 3. Resident Evil: Code Veronica X 4. Resident Evil 3 (Original is much better than the remake imo) 5. Resident Evil 4 (The setting wasn't my favorite) Looking forward a lot to playing through the rest, especially 7 and 8.
Resident evil 4 is the best game out of the series , just can’t beat it , sound track was so fire and use to get me creeped out to play it, plus the merchant is so iconic , I’m sure anyone who’s played re4 can recognize his voice without lookin
Resident evil 2, 3 and code Veronica were actually forbidden in Germany and you couldn’t buy them 😄 4 didn’t play in Eastern Europe btw. I think it was Spain 🇪🇸
I remember I bought a GameCube for the sole reason it had RE 1 Remake and RE Zero. Important to note that while I enjoyed RE4 on GameCube and still think that it was the best version of RE4 for a long time, but RE 1 Remake and RE Zero were the exclusives I was mainly after. So I've got to say I don't know if it's my nostalgia or the excitement I had for the games I had wanted to play for so long and finally got to, both games became some of my favorite RE games I've ever played. I actually don't think I was ever frustrated with the changing of characters mechanics in RE Zero, I think it was quite refreshing at the time and something I enjoyed. So in the general scheme of things my favorite 3 games in the series are RE 2, then RE 1 Remake and then RE Zero. My 3 least favorite games are RE 6 (OF COURSE, hate this abomination!), RE 5 and, surprisingly, RE 3. The last one I kinda don't like because it looked like my favorite RE2, but completely changed the pace and the focus of the game. It felt much more fast and action-y and kinda shallow and less horror oriented in it's overall atmosphere and design compared to RE2, and it didn't sit well with me. In the end I didn't hate the game, I was just kinda disappointed (cause I really wanted more of that RE2 goodness).
Funny, I did the same thing. I bought a GameCube JUST for Resident Evil. I wanted to play the RE1 remake, RE0, and RE4, which were all exclusive to that console at that time. It also helped that RE2 and RE3 got GameCube ports, which I bought as well. So I had a nice RE collection going for my GameCube. Code Veronica had also been ported to it, but for whatever reason I never got it. I don't remember ever being frustrated with switching between characters in RE Zero either. I thought it was kinda cool and unique. My sister definitely had a problem with it, though. She didn't care for the mechanic at all either. That, combined with the game's difficulty (It IS one of the harder RE games) made Zero her least-favorite of the ones she's played. She didn't like it so much that she couldn't even finish it. Are you talking about the remake of RE3? Or the original? Or maybe you feel the same way about both and it doesn't matter which one. I actually adore the original RE3. Not as much as the original RE2, but it's up there. The remake was a disappoint, but I still enjoyed it for what it was. I don't consider RE6 to be an "abomination". Yeah, it kinda sucks as an RE title...but on it's own, it's a pretty fun game. I enjoyed it.
@@SlasherIncorporated Yeah, I'm talking about the original RE3. I didn't even try the remake, that's how much of a disappointment the original RE3 had been to me. And when I saw that the RE3 remake received lots of bad and kinda meh reviews I thought: "But of course! The original was not so good to begin with. What did you expect from the remake? You can polish the turd all you want, it would still remain a turd at its' heart". Sorry, lol, I just really don't like RE3. Can't help it, it was very mediocre and uninspired, in my opinion. Like a DLC to a really great game, made by people who didn't understand what made the original great. :-)
RE6 is a fun action game! I had a friend play through 1-Village for the first time recently and they even said they really enjoyed RE6 and thought it was fun. It may not be scary, may not have the best level design; but it is a fun action game with a great mercenaries mode.
RE: Code Veronica on the Dreamcast was one of my favorites. The graphics back then blew me away . Anyways great vid guys! Look forward to seeing some more rate videos .
My personal favorites are RE2, Code Veronica, and Village. My whole life I would have said that 2 was my top favorite Resident Evil game but I think Village has taken that spot for me. I loved everything about Resident Evil Village, from the gameplay to the lore to the graphics and setting. I had so much fun playing through Village. Great episode guys, this was really fun to watch.
10. Re 7 9. Re 0 8. Code Veronica 7. Re 3 6. Re 8 5. Re 6 4. Re 5 3.re 2 2. Re 1 1.re 4 If we include the remakes the list would be different Remake 1 is the best resident evil 🐣
My list : 1) RE2 remake 2) RE3 original 3) RE3 remake 4) RE1 remake 5) RE2 original 6) RE4 Atmosphere of 7 and 8 are great but FPS is just no for me when it comes to survival horror. Waiting on the gold edition to play 8 3rd person view.
It’s a shame the RE3 remake was so short. When I played it, it seemed more refined and a bit faster paced than RE 2 remake. If they would have put a mercenaries mode in that game the playability would have been through the roof. That being said my favorite as of now has to be RE 2 remake. Hands down.
I know I'm coming to this discussion over a month late, but yeah, what a shame with the RE3-make. Genuinely baffling that they decided to cut content from an already short game in the name of "reimagining", only to leave us with an unsatisfying package with albeit fun mechanics carried over from the excellent RE2-make.
3 was my first RE and is my all time favorite. The characters, nemesis, the SETTING (esp clock tower, raccoon city) were so iconic and unforgettable to me. Maybe some other games are objectively better, but this was the game that made me feel the happiest and accomplished.
Unlike the rest (or most); I actually love RE6 as it has the most ambitious, varied and best controls the series ever had. Also soo many multiplayer/coop options ( split screen, Online and local adhoc cool in the Switch). It is probably number 3 for me as an RE game as it isn't a traditional RE game, but it still a great game overall). RE Zero is my number 10 and yes coop would have made more sense for it.
Village was a bit of a letdown for me. Feel like the first person style Resident Evil games worked better in a more personal, claustrophobic setting, rather than the sprawling Village in 8.
@@josephmissig5301 my exact concern. Was really excited for Village, but wasn’t anything I’d return to. Definitely worry 9 will follow the same formula.
Only played the original three games, and absolutely adored them. Badly wanted to play Code Veronica, but didn't have Dreamcast. By time RE4 came out my life was very different and I basically lost track of RE. I do remember being turned off by it as from what I'd seen it looked so different from the first three. Played a little bit of 5, but kind of hated it.
Oh man, I’d love if you guys took this same format and ranked other franchises like Zelda, Street Fighter, Mario etc.
Street Fighter, please!!!!!!!
I agree! More top tens. Mario's and Zelda for sure but also I really respect your taste/focus on some video games that mainstream doesn't mention often. So top ten of those too.
Definitel
Yes!!!
Building off of this a ranking of the FF series would be awesome as well!!
Go talk to your cousin and play Resi2 remake together! 🤓
I totally agree with Johnny about the Dreamcast having “arcade” graphics. I remember playing Marvel vs Capcom 2 on my buddies Dreamcast back in the day and our minds were blown away.
It was games like Power Stone, Crazy Taxi and Soul Calibur that really sold the look for me
The Dreamcast is based on Sega’s Naomi arcade board which is why it has such an arcade feel. It’s a essentially a home version of Naomi.
@Ms Aileen Valentine While I was bummed they did away with the pre-rendered backgrounds and fixed camera angles, RE 4 is universally loved.
Wow imagine starting with one of the worst games in series... I'm so happy I started with RE1 I will say tho that 2 Is my favourite in the series
One of my favorite gaming channels on the tube for years now. Cheers. Great video as always
Johnny's videos with Rob are like youtube "chicken soup for the soul" lol. You guys can take us all back to simpler, happier times.
This was an EXCELLENT episode, seeing the different video game preferences of Johnny and Rob is something I could watch for hours!
I love that you guys give Code Veronica the love it deserves, it has issues for sure but it's still my favorite of the classic style RE games.
Definitely the one I enjoyed the most back in the day. Haven't played any since GameCube 😬
Hell yea, playing Code Veronica on a Sega Dreamcast, after loving RE2 on the Playstation. Was a great time.
I never get tired of you and Rob talking Resident Evil - thanks for this!
Agreed.

“Totally”
“Fair”
Gotta love their back and forth lol
I only started watching Happy Console Gamer this year, now going back and watching the older ones Rob is the man. Every episode with him is great.
The original will always be my fave. So simple and straightforward, and so nostalgic. Also love the cheesy dialogue and FMVs. Who doesn’t love a good Jill sandwich!?
UN-RICO!!
Same here, OG 96 release will always be my favorite. I actually go the broken shotgun route so I can see Barry outside w/ Forrest and the other scenes with Barry. Haven't done a Jill sandwich route in a while.
The original longbox and 1st ed jewel case. The DC with the updated soundtrack...UGH.
Anyone who makes the claim remake is better than og is a phillistine
@@benjaminharrison1522 Loved both but to say Remake didn't vastly improve upon the original game is asinine.
They definitely should have remade Code: Veronica before RE4
The only reason I got a dream cast and what a game
@@pockets6794 everyone might hate me for this but i don’t know what made RE 4 so great that everyone can’t stop praising it. Honestly it didn’t look even scary to me and the gameplay was just ok. I might be nit picking but how the fuck do i take Leon seriously doing a roundhouse kick to knock down enemies? It doesn’t seem believable. Why didn’t they use a more believable melee attack. Like using the stock of your guns? Or even a punch or a front thrust kick
best RE out there
My favorite RE games are RE2 Remake, RE4 and RE1 Remake.
I have fond memories of Code Veronica also. The new RE7 and 8 are up there, but not in my top 3.

RE5 online coop made it really fun. I have great memories of playing that game through multiple times and getting the platinum trophy.
Exactly!! It was my favorite resident evil game. Me and my buddy would go back and perfect every level, get the crossbow and gating gun... unlocked every secret the game had. Lol

Nostalgia factor makes the og one better, but new fans will obviously say the remake made it better
100% AGREED!!!
1 kinda sucked for me until the GC remake. That remake is still top 3 to this day and still looks amazing.
@@KingofPho75 did you play it when it released or at a later date?
The game was honestly ahead of its time. It has so many layers. Mansion, garden, sewer, cave, lab. It never ended. Amazing at that time. Also two playable characters
I agree. When re1 came out there was nothing else like it!
Great video. I like RE7’s closeup approach like RE1/2 did. 8 is good too but I enjoyed 7 more.
I enjoyed 7 more as well 8 is to 7 as 3 is to 2 for me.
Yeah 7 is much better horror vibe 8 went to much action route in my opinion.
Yeah, 7 just had more up close horror abs gore. It’s amazing.
I’m playing RE3 remake right now. And this is turning out to be up there for me as well. Great graphics!
My favorite is 7 as well. I have the VR version and love it
I absolutely love RE7, I think it's a masterpiece, been putting off 8 but will give it a go soon, it's a shame that the consensus seems to be that it isn't as good as 7.
What’s funny is at the start of this video I thought “there is no way these guys don’t pick 2 as the GOAT”. I fully agree. It’s the one that legitimized the genre and that is where all my nostalgia for the series lives. Awesome video!
2 was more action for me, the original is the only game in the series to be 100% survival horror
Been torn from playing 6 since release. I feel obligated to one day just to get any lore I missed out on.
Mercs looks fun too.
I like to join the game as a zombie
Had so much fun watching this episode with Rob! Your videos together are always great. Big hug for both of you and I hope you guys are keeping well.
Johnny hasn't actually played through most of these games obviously. He didn't know anything about Rebecca and he called her Rachel.

A great walk down Resident Evil Lane. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Always love an HCG video. Jonny + Rob automatically bumps it up another point. A whole Resident Evil ranking over 30 minutes long is +100 more points. This is a nice way to end a long day of work and relax before getting back to it. God Bless.

I have a weird soft spot for the first Revelations game i thought the setting and the campy nature was really enjoyable.
Plus it blew my MIND on 3ds back in the day
That one is great, it's one of my favorites.
When RE4 came out, many people commented that it was the first time an escort mission in a video game was actually enjoyable!
He says he didn't like there wasn't any zombies in Re4 but puts Re7 amd Re8 on top of his list which didn't have zombies
@@adamsingh7262 agreed! It was an extremely influential game.
Resident evil 1 Remake as my number one as best Re and best video game of all time
Same here. No other Res evil game comes close to the evil 1 remake. Maybe 2 and 3. But the first res evil (remake) is hands down one of if not the best games.
I love when people knows about videogames like you, I like this format
I loves code Veronica, didn't have a dreamcast back in the day but got it on the ps2. Have to say I think RE2 is my no1 as well and the remake of 2 is excellent
RE2 on 64 was my first love but Code Veronica really hooked me, I never felt more pride beating a game! Best story, best creepy vibes.
Johnny could almost dress up as Berry from the first cut scene in the original resident evil and nobody would notice a difference!!!
Haha!!
Although the RE2 one was ok.)
1, Resident Evil 4
2, Resident Evil Remake (GameCube then
later remastered for PS3)
3, Resident Evil 2 (Original)
4, Resident Evil 5
5, Resident Evil 7
I didn't want to include the Original RE twice so I just went with the remake since it's the better option.
Spot on, but I would've put the original version of Code Veronica (not X which was worse in terms of visuals, gameplay and audio) in place of RE7.
4 was when the series took a downturn from survival horror to an arcade style game where the answer to all problems is to shoot everythjng.
My fav Re1 remake and Re2 remake
8 is so good. It goes 8- 3-2
Instant click cause I love RE. Now time to get triggered when they hate on RE4 and 5.
EDIT: Since they asked about our fav games, REmake1>RE4>REmake2>RE5>Code Veronica>Outbreak1>RE1>RE2>RE3>REmake3>RE0>RE7
Also, I hate 6 too lol.
I wouldn't call it a perfect remake but it's very close. My only knock is the B scenarios were done a little lazy.
Used to love watching your channel back in 08/09, great to see you and Rob man still going :)
My favorite from the old games is resident evil 1 and from the "recent" revelations 2. But from 1 till Code Veronica all of them are great. After re4 the games started to follow an action route that I don't like very much. Still resident evil will be will forever one of my favorite gaming experiences ever, great memories.
Resident Evil Revelations 2 deserves a lot more love. That game is so underated.

I’m so glad I’m not the only one who liked the resident evil 3 remake.
Love if you guys rank games of other franchises. This was a great idea.
Personally, my favorite Resident Evil game is 4 followed by REmake 2: Electric Zombie Boogaloo (as I'd love to call it), and 7.
This is quite amazing that in 2022, everyones fav RE game is still RE2. I am so glad because it's the only RE game I own. It makes me feel good.
So refreshing to see some Code Veronica appreciation. Easily my favourite.
Agreed!

Same! Code Veronica most underrated game ever
I have no interest in the Resident Evil franchise yet I still watched this whole video. That's just the amount of wholesome appeal this channel has.
Resident Evil is one of my favorite game series, so hyped to watch this (just started). :D
@Slawsers Resident Evil for me :)
@Slawsers Sucks that Silent Hill is up in the air now. Seems like we won't see another mainline series entry for a long time, if ever.
For me it was a tie between 2 & 4
I started with 2 when i was 10 years old and was hooked ever since.

Finally
We’ve been waiting a while for this one
The original RE2 will forever be my number one. Partially because of Nostalgia, but also because it's such a damn good game that still holds up, it's perfection. RE6 is easily the worst, but also a victim of the way the series went: With the storyline it HAD to be more action oriented. RE4 and 5 already moved from Horror towards shooters, and RE5 is unironically one of my favorite Co-Op games. RE6 had to be an action game for story reasons, but the story telling is also what ruins the game. Confusing, overly long, unsatisfying conclusions to plot lines.
"Had to be an action game for story reasons" mmm and what if the story was written after they decided it was gonna be an action game?
The OG RE2 will forever be my favorite cause of how amazing it was and the nostalgia i have towards it
Can I just say I love these episodes with you and Rob
RE4 is easily my favorite. I’ve beaten it so many times.
RE5 is a game I really enjoy, but not as an RE game imo.
RE4 is a timeless classic that’s been alive for multiple generations. Like Skyrim and GTA V.
@@jesuspernia8031 and it’s a good reason for that
4 is awful compared to the rest of the series aside from the characters it strayed so far away from a survival horror into an arcade style shooting game a la house if the dead.

Hot garbage take
This video was great thank you for making this!
If you're not ranking resi 7 as the VR mode, you're doing it wrong. That is absolutely insane.
Amazing video guys. I would love to see you guys do this with other franchises. It would be so much fun. Love how you guys did your own list with disagreements. Makes the conversation so much more interesting.
I haven't played them all yet but so far it goes like this:
1. Resident Evil 2 (Both the original and the remake tbh)
2. Resident Evil 1 (REmake > original imo)
3. Resident Evil: Code Veronica X
4. Resident Evil 3 (Original is much better than the remake imo)
5. Resident Evil 4 (The setting wasn't my favorite)
Looking forward a lot to playing through the rest, especially 7 and 8.
You can skip Zero, 5 and 6 easily. Just go with 7 and 8 right away
Re 0 5 and 6 are very much worth playing lol
Resident evil 4 is the best game out of the series , just can’t beat it , sound track was so fire and use to get me creeped out to play it, plus the merchant is so iconic , I’m sure anyone who’s played re4 can recognize his voice without lookin
Great list and RE has been my favorite franchise since the very beginning.
REmake 1 is the only game I have given a 10/10. Perfection. 😎👍
RE 1 remake is in my top 10 games of all time the best of the best
Resident evil 2, 3 and code Veronica were actually forbidden in Germany and you couldn’t buy them 😄
4 didn’t play in Eastern Europe btw.
Amazing episode guys absolutely loved it!
As soon as I saw the title and started to mentally order the games for myself, my first thought was “well, obviously resident evil 2 is number one…”.
Resident evil 1998 ps1 will always be number 1
Johnny is like a combination of Barry and Wesker from the live action RE1 footage. Lol.
RE6 is a fun action game! I had a friend play through 1-Village for the first time recently and they even said they really enjoyed RE6 and thought it was fun. It may not be scary, may not have the best level design; but it is a fun action game with a great mercenaries mode.
Ehh
Great video. I wish that the remakes got their own entries though. RE2: Remake is my favourite 😄
Agreed. I love the video, but I did find it very strange that they did not do that.
Ugh I hated RE8…
Re2 remake is the best, can’t stop playing it. They must remake re1, re4, re5, and re6 with this engine.
10. Re 7
9. Re 0
8. Code Veronica
7. Re 3
6. Re 8
5. Re 6
4. Re 5
3.re 2
2. Re 1
1.re 4
If we include the remakes the list would be different Remake 1 is the best resident evil 🐣
Love Rob & Johnny vids
I just beat the Re 2 remake for the first time and holy shit it was amazing!
Right? My hands down top fave of the series. Bought a console specifically to play it.
My list :
1) RE2 remake
2) RE3 original
3) RE3 remake
4) RE1 remake
5) RE2 original
6) RE4
Atmosphere of 7 and 8 are great but FPS is just no for me when it comes to survival horror. Waiting on the gold edition to play 8 3rd person view.
Totally agree with Rob here, Resident Evil 4 is a good game but definitely not up there in the Top 5 for me.
What’s your top 5 re games?
Loved this video, would def like to see more of these in other series.
It’s a shame the RE3 remake was so short. When I played it, it seemed more refined and a bit faster paced than RE 2 remake. If they would have put a mercenaries mode in that game the playability would have been through the roof. That being said my favorite as of now has to be RE 2 remake. Hands down.
The original re3 is also fast paced
Hell yeah. Re2 Remake is a damn masterpiece
I also rate this very high myself. Four different campaigns + very fluid controls.
I love RE5. Seriously one of my favorites in the series. RE2 probably takes the #1 spot for me.
Village was a bit of a letdown for me. Feel like the first person style Resident Evil games worked better in a more personal, claustrophobic setting, rather than the sprawling Village in 8.
Village is the least scary Resident Evil game to me. It was more action based and I hope Capcom does not go down that road again with the series.
@@josephmissig5301 my exact concern. Was really excited for Village, but wasn’t anything I’d return to. Definitely worry 9 will follow the same formula.
A sprawling village lol thatʼs an antagonism pal
@@JeanBaptisteEmanuelZorg do you feel complete after that comment? I’m happy for you
Only played the original three games, and absolutely adored them. Badly wanted to play Code Veronica, but didn't have Dreamcast.
By time RE4 came out my life was very different and I basically lost track of RE. I do remember being turned off by it as from what I'd seen it looked so different from the first three.
Played a little bit of 5, but kind of hated it.
