Diagnosed with schizophrenia as a teen, Sim Kah Lim was admitted to Singapore’s Institute of Mental Health at 15. An avid artist since the age of 4, his illness dashed his dreams of exhibiting his work to the world, but he never stopped painting.
Now 35 years later, he’s sold over 40 paintings, held 3 solo exhibitions, and with his sister’s support, is finally discharged and out in the world, an example of hope and mental health recovery.

@jarrod yuki you are aware that mental institution isnt prison, arent you? Or is it in singapore? The video said that he diagnosed with schizophrenian which sadly uncurable. Medicines (and/or drugs) could help to suppress the symptom but they would never go. So, maybe only after 35 yrs he finally able to suppress or "ignore" his symptom.

Kudos to his sister for sticking by him.His paintings are remarkable.I would gladly buy them if I am an avid art collector.
I can't imagine the fear and stress he have went through as a 15 y/o in the mental hospital.
Also all the efforts his family members have contributed to him.
What touches me the most is how much he love Singapore. One people, one nation, one Singaporean we are.
yes it is very difficult even for adults to be locked up there and I also cant imagine being locked up behind IMH bars for 35 years. its difficult for some people to hear this but IMH really wasted his life away. those who stayed there before will understand what I mean.
I wished they let him go home to recuperate sooner. those who stayed in IMH know how torturous and boring it is to be locked up in their hell wards. most patients there never commit any crimes yet are locked up indefinitely like criminals. 35 years is too long a time, this may be difficult for some to hear but IMH really wasted his life away.
Kah Lim's latest exhibition is on Saturday, Nov 16, at Goshen Art Gallery in Singapore.

With all due respect, 1 month stay in ICU ward, or nursing home can be costly. but this man stayed for 35years in IMH ward. We salute him. We hope the ruling party can assist in any way or another.
The ruling party will ask that man to help himself while they eagerly await the collection of their high salary.

Mental health shouldn’t imprison ppl in an institution unless ppl are a danger to themselves or others! Even then they should be regularly reviewed!

I'm really envy with his talent, so that he can makes contribution/support to his family and society. Of course he has no worry to support himself. That really makes me look at my self, "actually what can i really do? What do you have? What's ur talent? What's ur contribution? Especially for your parents.

A talented artist, kind heart and he could have problem making ends meet. medication might not work on some schizophrenia patients. It is an obvious mental disorder. pretty surprise he still have enough attention span in painting. The only indication and only explanation He is a fighter. indeed he is, end of video revealed his inner sides , proud & confidence of his effort. If this is god will, he will start from where he is what he have and control, expanding his limit. People might be polite. He cares less. This is the best painting at this price you can get, look no further. I admire him. 10 years ago, resolution=fluent spoken english... tomorrow new year day or not... denial to know... because another year gone, nothing achieve. still empty pocket
