The Chihuahua is a saucy little hot tamale and not just because of his association with a certain fast-food Mexican restaurant. He's renowned for being the world's smallest dog, but he may well have the world's biggest personality stashed inside that tiny body. That larger-than-life persona makes him appealing to men and women alike.
Fun-loving and busy, Chihuahuas like nothing better than to be close to their people. They follow them everywhere in the house and ride along in tote bags when their people run errands or go shopping. It's not unusual for Chihuahuas to form a close bond with a single person, and they can become very demanding if they're overindulged.
Besides being affectionate housemates, Chihuahuas are intelligent and fast learners. They can compete in agility and obedience trials with just as much enthusiasm and success as larger dogs. That said, they're willful little dogs. You'll be most successful if you can persuade them that competing - or simply doing as you ask - is fun. Use positive reinforcement in the form of praise and food rewards when training your Chihuahua. He won't respond to harsh treatment.
It's important when considering the Chihuahua to take into account his small size. Chihuahuas are curious and bold explorers. They've escaped from yards through small gaps in the fence and can squeeze into places that other puppies and dogs wouldn't be able to fit. And even though they tend to rule the roost, they can be accidentally injured by rambunctious larger dogs.

I've had Chihuahuas for years, both short and long coats. They are indeed a sweet breed and smart. I currently have only two long coats. I have 4 in my pet cemetery and each of them is missed dearly. My latest was cremated and I have his ashes in the tiniest urn you could imagine. They are such special dogs and each one has a different personality. I just love Chihuahuas!
I recently had to put my 18 year old Chihuahua Max to sleep. They are are all you said and more.
I found/adopted a chihuahua mix puppy last month and he's so fricken cute, smart, loyal, trainable, watchdog, cuddly..what else...I'm just lovin and enjoying him so much!

Its just I want my 1st Chihuahua to be a puppy , etc y then after that I'll consider slightly older to senior Chihuahuas .
My Chihuahua puppy found me about 4 years ago on Christmas day. She's also a mixed but looks mainly like a Chihuahua. She's been amazing and so smart and helped my dying dad and has saved my life before. So sweet but you have to let them have play time or else be prepared to suffer.😜

I have a purebred long-haired Chihuahua named Tuffy. She is black, tan and white with a curly tail that points like a periscope when she's outside exploring.
She is the best dog I have ever had. Very low maintenance and very smart.
One night while working at about 3am, I stopped at a 24 hr gas station in the middle of nowhere. There was a self serve pump. No attendant.
I was hauling bulk newspapers and dropped a bundle in front of a small shack that served as a coveinience store.
I pumped some gas and bought a coke from a machine. I was anxious to get home and very tired.
After I left, I drove about an hour before I realized Tuffy wasn't in the car! In a panic, I turned around on a winding gravel road and made a beeline back to the station.
When I returned, she was sitting next to the door waiting. Oh yeah I forgot to mention, she was just a pup back then!
And then there was the time she saw a horse and got so excited she jumped out the window...
I had a chi and a horse. When we went to the barn ..he would always try to push the horses around
What a great story! She sounds so smart! Was she okay after jumping out the window when she saw the horse?
I have a deer head chi/rat terrier mix. She's 7 lbs and LEAN. She spends most of her day sleeping or cuddling me. She's also quite fond of going for car rides, which came in handy when I moved halfway across the country with her. She'll go off when the doorbell rings or when my roommate gets a phone call because she's associated his ring tone with someone about to be at the door (pandemic food delivery). While I taught her to high five and sit, she showed me that she already knew how to "dance" when I got her. She's amazing and I love her so much!
I've had chihuahuas for 61 years. I breed them in the 70s. I can not imagine life without a Chihuahua. I have two smooth coat females at the moment. And i would love to have a long coat female too. One of the best dogs in the world.

I had two. They loved, loved to hike in the mountains here in Alberta in the Rocky Mountains. They can easily do ten miles with some serious elevation gain. But with some snow, they may need a little help. Their little legs can poke into the snow. I put them in my pack then. But they loved it! When I got out the hiking packs they started getting so excited. They are tougher than most people think.

We are guessing our Chewawa is 12 or older. Shes amazing! God knew just what we needed. We preferred bigger breads like labs, shepherds huskiesetc.she is the best dog we EVER had. Not a yippee and she doesn't bark at people at the door or mailman. She lives the lap. She's polite and well mannered. We can take her anywhere. She doesn't bite. She also doesn't do tricks. But she is obedient. She puts when you pet her. Her name is Hope. HangOnPrayExpecta miracle. A gift from God tailor trained just for us.

We just adopted a 4 month old Chihuahua, who had been attacked by a Pit Bull and lost one of her eyes. In spite of that, she is a ball of energy and so incredibly sweet! I love her so much! And speaking of children, there was another family who applied for her, but I got lucky because they had small children and ours are grown.
I adopted my chihuahua when she was about 2-3 years old. She didn't have any training before we got her and she still gets confused sometimes but she picked up on simple commands and recognized her new name very quickly.
I got mine 4 years ago with no expectations beside sit/paw/stay, but after 2 years he started waking me up with a very destinctive bark if I experienced hypoglycemia while sleeping. I figure I've given him treats while trying to get my bloodsugar up, and he connected the dots. So he has turned into a little life saver, and is proof chihuahua's are intelligent dogs.
My little Buddy is 8 years old. I adopted him when he was 4. He's 75% Chichi. He's got a severe heart murmur and a bad hip 😔 He's an amazing companion. I take him everywhere he's allowed to be. He flew for the first time this year and did so well!!! And no, I didn't pull the "emotional support" card. I paid the extra $100 to let him fly legitimately. He's worth it!!!

I want to thank you for such a wonderfully accurate video on this very special breed. As the owner of two amazing chihuahuas I have seen so many videos and posts that only portray them as evil little rat dogs and it infuriates me. Chi’s are like any other breed. If not trained and socialized correctly of course they could be difficult dogs like any other breed. This video highlights the amazing qualities of this breed while informing of the “bad” that is common in this breed such as not getting along well with small children. As I mentioned I have two chihuahuas brothers from the same litter that I rescued at 7 weeks from a backyard breeder in my area. I was surprised to find they have total opposite personalities. They are wonderful animals that deserve a better reputation in the dog world.

We adopted 3 different kinds of chihuahua and the one that bonded to me is a short hair deer head mixed with pug . I socialized him at doggie park , I trained him to be gentle with children but I instruct them what they can but there was one little kid who was too much for him gave him a warning bite thank goodness it was a warning bite.
My husband and I owned chihuahuas for almost 30 years we went our separate ways after 28 I kept a mother and her new born pup. Mom I found dead one morning, no warnings, after I had her for 16 years She was a short hair but gave birth to both long hair and short hair. I got the mom my ex got the dad ,a dear head. Mom was apple the pup I kept was a apple as well. I also got to have her in my life for 16 years but arthritis got in her hips and I had to have her put to rest,one of the hardest things I ever had to do. Now I have another chihuahua ,my daughter rescued her for me,they said she was mixed with another small dog but I don't see it in her.She is a very sweet and loving dog.But unlike my other chihuahuas if she get outside she runs. My mother and daughter rarely left my side.
I've had a lot of really big dogs. Never did I ever think of getting a chihuahua... Then, just a couple weeks ago, a friend of mine basically dumped her 2 chihuahas on me. She gave me the dogs's medical records... We have bonded. They are incredible dogs! They are really snugglers. The smaller of the 2 gets cold when it's 90 degrees, so he wears a sheep-skin coat when it's below 90 degrees.

My Chi loved everyone (except this one child who we believed tormented it) and he was a bit shy at first with people but once he got to know the person he'd never get off their laps lol

I too had Poncho at 15 that I had to put down, I decided l loved him enough to let him go. It has now been 10 years, I just 3 months ago got a replacement. I find the new pup lovable, but not on the scale of the one I lost. I am thinking it may be understanding, how devastating a pets loss can be

Many inaccuracies, despite the good intentions of the narrator. One, the Techichi dog (pronounced te-shi-shi) was common in Mesoamerica, true enough, but was not exclusive to the Toltecs. Recent DNA analysis has confirmed that both chihuahueños (their correct name) and xoloescuintles ARE native to México. Some cross-breeding may have occured, of course. One has only to look at the sillY AKC and the British "version" of the Chihuahueño and the supposed "standard"that they promote to see this. The "carvings" the narrator speaks of are actually paintings, and the sculptures shown are from the Colima state region. Just a few friendly comments. Greetings from Guadalajara...

@@lisaroy9538 Yes. Mine had seizures. They didn't last long and not often but I would just pet him until it was over. He wasn't in pain.
My Chi has a lot of seizures. He is on phenobarbital and still has seizures at least once a week or more. But, Ozzie is sweet as can be and we love him to bits.

She lives on a farm in aberdeenshire scotland and one night as she came through to the back porch from the kitchen to let bear out through the catflap ( she has 7 cats) for his last pee of the day there was a badger with his nose sticking in through the flap. Before she could start bear was off after the badger in to the darkness and came back 10 seconds later safe and wondering why his mum was having a meltdown.
Please watch for predator birds.... they can take your baby away in a split second! Don't leave them outside alone!
This is good advice. Our eldest dog passed away recently, but when he was still alive he would often go potty late in the night. One time an owl swooped down and tried to take him. He would have died if I hadn't been out there.

I have two Chihuahuas. They have strong personalities but they don't play together. My black chi Soosie won't let any other pets on the bed at night. When I come home from any trip they get so excited even if I'm only gone a few minutes

I was going to say that obesity is a HUGE problem with the breed because they love to eat and they are so cute so we over reward them and thats bad for them.
It's also easy to give them the wrong size training snack. What looks like a reasonable portion to us adds up if you're feeding a bunch of treats in a training session.

I wish my chihuahua was cute and peaceful, he is cute but very aggressive and bite me really hard I bleed. I have never had a dog being aggressive to me and I’ve had lots of dogs in my 63yrs.

My chi pup loves EVERYBODY . She loves kids. She's very smart but very stubborn . She just turned 1, & is cutting her molar teeth so shes chewing everything again. She eats every veggie except greens...not a fan.
