Yep, I learned too late by accident about the "bat on the shoulder" technique. I realized after I had stopped playing organized ball that I had hit the best when I was doing drills that required starting with the bat on shoulder. Can't fill a young player's head with mechanical mumbo jumbo. Keep it simple and drill. So much hitting instruction is way too complicated. Trying to hit a baseball is no time to be thinking about anything. If you start a swing well, you'll probably end it well.
Okay, I understand the first move of snapping wrist to hit catcher on head and moving hips at same time, what my son and I are struggling with understanding is how to adjust to high inside fast ball or low outside pitch etc..using this concept of swinging, we believe this can certainly hit nukes with a pitch down the middle but we are still learning proper mechanics and just looking for a better/dumbed down explanation of adjusting to anything not down the middle....any one that believes in and is having success with what Teacherman is teaching..can you help describe how to adjust to those more challenging pitches in a different way as we are very intrigued and want to give this a go
If its high inside, your rear arm should stay in same position at contact as pre swing. Basically you wont extend your arms. Low outside would then have some extension in your back arm at contact and you would have more dip in your torso. He has a video about how he believes to attack these pitches
You don't adjust your swing to inside and outside pitches. The difference between inside and outside is timing. For outside pitch you need to swing later, let the ball travel deeper into the zone and you will naturally hit it to the opposite field for inside pitch you swing earlier and the ball will naturally be pulled. For high and low pitches you start with your hands up ideally so you should not need to adjust your hands. Low pitches means your hand should go lower and gravity will help you get to the ball.
That's the one thing I hate about coaching! When you look at a kid and tell them exactly what to do, and they completely ignore you. Or won't even look at you.
You say neck slot but many do this with bat off the back of the shoulder. Any thoughts on why off the shoulder wouldn’t be as good as from the neck slot?
I like launch plane as a concept better than “getting on plane”. Launch plane implies you are always on plane with the pitch, rather than starting somewhere else and getting there in the middle of the swing.
That looks like your wrist will hurt when you do that movement. I bat righty and and my left wrist hurts as if its going against it's natural motion. Any help??
As a former pro, I can tell you starting off kids with bat on their shoulder is great first step. Like he says, gets bat on plane with body tilt.
Doubt you're really a pro. C'mon man.

Can’t agree more. I started all my kids that way because it was easy for them to understand as well
Great idea - also prevents tension
Phillies! Love all your stuff and it’s really helped my LL team and applying it with my travel kids now.
I actually did this by accident one day in slow pitch softball and I crushed it, so I kept that stance still til this day
Ive just tried this for slopitch as well... it has yielded great results

I'm with you seems as if this would create a pull hitter rather than someone who can hit the ball anywhere
When you pivot the hands, aim the barrel using the end of the grip. The grip should line up with where the ball will be.

Good stuff, much appreciated.

Bat on the shoulder - George Brett always did this
Your thoughts on George Brett’s swing?
Does that include at launch position?
You say neck slot but many do this with bat off the back of the shoulder. Any thoughts on why off the shoulder wouldn’t be as good as from the neck slot?
You would not believe what pops up when you type george Brett’s name in the search bar in RUclips. The funniest story ever!! Thanks!
Yes, bat on shoulder!!!!! Woot the biggest insult to a pitcher.

I think 🤔 you are 👍 i did it and I think 🤔 you right that you amigo. 👍👍
Bo bichette, manny machado, Bryce Harper, all load up from bat on shoulder.
That's still a rotational swing unless you golf or uppercut everything
This must be why Cal Ripken held the bat on his shoulder near the end of his career. It makes too much sense.
I also find the armpit is a good starting point
Terrible
How so?
