R44s Running on the A Line (2007-2009)

  • The R44s used to be the main fleet of the A line until 2010. These cars, which look similar to the R46, were retired due to concerns about their structural condition. Notice the different sounds they make compared to the mechanically-different R46. Enjoy!

    • @NYLifeInNJ
      @NYLifeInNJ 3 года назад +10

      Not sure if that would make much of a difference, because what ultimately led to their retirement was the structural integrity of their car body frame, which was built with carbon steel. During the graffiti era, most subway cars undergone acid treatment, in which some of it was said to have leaked into the car body frames, and thus causing frame rot.
      The general overhaul was done to replace electronic and mechanical components, but not necessarily change anything with respect to the car body itself, minus some small aesthetics on the exterior. It was determined right before their early retirement that the structural integrity of their car body frame may not last long for most of the fleet, before something serious can happen.
      I miss these cars too, as I had grown up with them on the A train

    Nice. I’ll never forget the times I rode the R44 (A) train. Although it sucks now that the R44s retired 1 to 3 years early, it’s a good thing the R46s has survived 2 to 5 extra years to make up for the amount of time used up by the structural issues that could’ve been addressed on the R44s back then. Although the R44s have their own share of issues, they’ll still remain as part of our childhood and will always be known as one of the the legendary (A) train fleets

    “Until 2010, the A line was the mainstay of the R44 type subway cars. The R44s were built in 1971-1973 by the St. Louis Car company, and we’re retired in 2010 by the R160 type cars.”
    Yet, in 2010, not a SINGLE R160 was sent in regular revenue service on the A line. They used R46s instead.
