  • Have you ever noticed that abandoned track at Myrtle Avenue Broadway and thought or wondered something like, “What was that track used for?” Well that track used to be the extension of the Myrtle Avenue El that extended to jay street and Adams street. It was used for the MJ train that ran from Metropolitan Avenue in Queens, to Jay Street-Borough Hall in Brooklyn.

It didn't stand for the Michael Jackson train since it existed even before Michael Jackson was born, the actual name of the MJ Train was Myrtle Avenue Elevated. But it ended in the 1940s and never ran anymore, that's wut the Trussel above Myrtle Avenue-Broadway is. That's also the same track that runs with the M from Central Avenue to Seneca Avenue. Other times, the Myrtle Avenue Elevated ran to Jay Street before part of it watch demolished.

Actually transfer was not available to to the A,E and F trains. It was a weird setup where you could get a free transfer from Jay St-Borough Hall to Bridge Jay Street, but not the other way around. You'd get a paper ticket and Jay St Borough Hall, go out in the street and then climb up to Bridge Jay street. They wouldn't let you do it the other way.

Yes I knew that, that’s why I wasn’t sure if I needed to add that announcement.

That can't be right. What I do remember seeing post closure of the line was the bus issued transfer saying it was valid for entry into the subway at Jay for a ride to Broadway-Nassau, the closest station to the old Park Row el terminal. The Board of Transportation would not eliminate a service and then offer a transfer in one direction. Though at least a single one way transfer existed at 42nd and Sixth for a short while when Christie Street opened. It went to two before the passageway opened in 1971. The lord giveth and taketh.

I checked from a reliable source and there is some truth to what you said. After 9-14-56 11:59PM the outbound transfer was issued only to customers paying a fare at Bway-Nassau IND (not just anybody exiting the IND at Jay St). Also the inbound transfer stopped being issued at Myrtle/Jay and instead was only issued to passengers paying a fare at the stations served solely by MJ trains -except during non AM and midday Mon-Sat hours and all Sun - when fares were collected on-board and transfers issued at Jay. Starting 1-1-90 the free transfer from/to the B54 at Jay and at Myrtle/Broadway was eliminated. As well the trains and stations never carried the MJ bullet.

@@trainluvr I checked the 1967 and 1968 subway maps and it appears, on paper that you are correct, however I distinctly remember that passengers getting of at Jay St Borough hall could get a ticket for transfer to the Myrtle Ave El. ( the MJ ).
