A trick I do with the V60 when I want to obey the 180 degree shutter rule is to switch to the ultra wide sensor which has a smaller aperture, then crop in post. Wish that electric glass Oneplus debuted on their concept phone will reappear

This is basically what Huawei forced you to do on the Mate 40 Pro, the smaller 1/1.5" (ironic that this is "smaller") ultrawide was the default video camera, and the 1/1.28" main was optimized for photos. To the point where it was kind of rubbish for video.

That is why variable aperture needs to be mainstream on flagship-grade phones. Sony Xperia Pro-I may not use the whole 1" sensor canvas, but having two different aperture truly helps a lot to reduce bokeh and exposure.
I don't mind having a thick phone if we can get rid of the camera bump and get a bigger battery. I still love the LG V50 and Nokia 9 PureView's flushed rear camera design. It look so beautifully elegant.
P.S. I so miss that Samsung Galaxy S4/K zoom. I would be so happy if we can get a 1" sensor with variable aperture and a proper optical zoom mechanism. Even a maximum 5x optical zoom is still fine by me.

Yeah I think the fact that sony included variable aperture shows they also makes cameras and understand it better, it's just such a shame they didn't untilize the whole sensor, 20mp for me is the perfect size for a phone camera. Also it's bloody expensive, which I might get seeing as it is top of the line but a couple hundred bucks wouldn't have hurt

I'm hoping/expecting the new Sony pro ii (or whatever they call it) to implement a full 1" type sensor plus the variable aperture that they had on the first iteration, though a fully variable rather than 2 fixed apertures would be great. Add a 2nd 1inch type sensor with a longer focal length 70-80mm equivalent for portraits etc and I'd be totally in...I don't think longer or variable zoom is really necessary especially with the bigger sensor and possibly a few more mega-pickles to play with (i e. 48 allowing the middle 12 for a centre crop 'zoom' in good light for a bit more reach. You'll have to check shutter speed, too. I have and have had a couple of big sensor phones, and shutter response has been relatively slow.
One thing the iPhone 13 impressed me with is how fast the shutter response is, and how quickly you can fire off a manual burst (automatic bursts require you to wait a half second and save at a much lower quality). Pixels are also supposed to have some pretty quick responses.
Only thing I've had that's faster is my old P20 Pro, which could do seven frames per second manually with its ultra-fast mono camera. I use it for sports, as it's much better for action shots than my current big sensor phone.

The variable aperture on the Mate 50 Pro does help, and it actually gives enough light gathering capacity at F1.4 on the 1/1.5" sensor that you don't really miss having a 1" sensor with an F1.9 aperture... well, at least in terms of light gathering.
In terms of raw optical resolution, there's still no replacement for displacement (To borrow an automotive term) and the bigger sensors are still superior when it comes to pixel peeping detail. Which matters for those of us who do need pixel peeping detail, (like when cropping in 1.5 to 2x from a shot from the main camera) but for 99.9% of consumers, it's not that big a deal. And with many opting for shorter telephotos with bigger sensors, it is becoming even less of an issue going forward. Eventually, the magic formula might be three 1/1.5" sensors in three different focal lengths. Who knows? But either way, it's nice that after a step backwards during the pandemic, cameras are getting bigger and better again.

Unfortunately, phone manufacturers, and users, don't seem to realise that the most important part of the camera is the LENS, not the size of the sensor or the number of megapixels. And you can't have a good quality lens, with variable aperture, or built in ND filter, without adding a lot more depth to the phone body. You can buy a cheap mirrorless camera for a fraction the price of a flagship phone and get a much better photographic tool.

But that's obviously going to become a necessary standard feature in the future.

It's really frustrating to see that apple's auto hdr processing has gotten worse with larger sensors. The system they use of aggressive noise reduction, then over sharpening, is really gross and splotchy. It looks like what was necessary for phones like the iPhone 12 Pro's little main sensor, but it hasn't evolved well with better hardware. It destroys fine detail in mixed light and dimmer conditions. It's really a shame.

Unfortunately most don't listen to me and end up breaking the new device much faster than the old or they even continue to use the old one after getting the new. Upgrade when you have a specific needs not when something new comes out.

1"-type sensor is enough, so a bigger sensor is not required. Now they need to work on other areas like clearer lenses for a more pleasant blur that does not have ghosting. Video needs to be improved. There is a need for variable apertures (Huawei is already attempting this), built in ND filters to achieve the 180 degree shutter rule. The video quality itself needs to be made a little bit softer, it's too sharp and harsh now. I would really like an oversampled 1080p from 4K option. I often do this where I film and edit in 4K but export at 1080p. It looks better than native 1080p and the size is smaller than what 4K would have been. HDR needs to be toned down. Let highlights clip but have the main subject be better, more naturally exposed. Pixels, for example, have really bad, ashy, grainy and odd looking HDR video. For low light digital stabilization should be disabled as it looks bad, I would take either optical or no stabilization at all. HDR makes artificial lights look odd because of image stacking, so for low light photos, I would like an option to disable HDR and just increase the shutter speed instead and take one photo for softly and evenly diffused light

I don't understand what large sensor has to do with shutter speed in video? A small sensor and a large sensor with the same exposure settings will look equally bright. Yes, the larger sensor gathers more light in total, but per area it's the same. The advantage is that you can use higher ISOs wigh less noise. But it's not like large sensors somehow magically make the image brighter. The same shutter speed limitations apply to small and large sensors. Or are you just talking about how no phone manufacturer so far made a variable aperture lens for a large sensor?

I'm using an unexpensive Redmi phone and let's me tell you, the cameras suck, both rear and front, no matter how much light you have, I just can't bear it. I'm looking for a flagship to go back to but so flagships these days are not that exciting to spend the money on, considering you can spend 1000e on a superb lens for your camera instead. Now I'm just laying low and wait for all this 1" sensor tech to mature on phones.

The main wide sensor is pretty well mature. 1" Types are REALLY good, especially when you can pair them with a variable aperture, and ND filters.
What's exciting now are the newer telephoto sensors on Xiaomi and Vivo. They dont "zoom" quite as far optically, but the sensor surface area on the Vivo X100 Ultra tele sensor is roughly the same as the main camera on the OnePlus 12.
It's a shame that Apple/Google/Samsung seem to be lagging in camera hardware...

@@SomeGadgetGuy I was super interested in Xiaomi 14 Ultra and its photography kits, but it wasn't available in Finland before. Now it's available but my friend in Vietnam has used it for awhile and he complains about its battery life all the time, so we're waiting if the 15 Ultra will fix this issue. At the moment, I'm also interested in the Oppo Find X7 Ultra but it's not available worldwide and the X8 Ultra might have a global version so I'm waiting for that as well 😅
