    Thank you for sharing this video! I've learned so much from Ann that I'd like to share some additional info with everyone: I shake/swirl from side to side instead of up & down to avoid excess mica lodging in the tube when it's all settled at the bottom. I also found it has less chance of clogging if you snip the tube (at an angle) so it is just very slightly above the bottom of the bottle where the mica collects. Perfect Pearls already have a binder in them, so you can save on not using hairspray/hair gel. (But if using loose mica and even some eyeshadows, you will need it as a fixative or you can use gum arabic). And my fav - I now use a few drops of re-inkers to the white pearl mixture to tint my spray instead of buying a bunch of colored mica. I also keep gold mica on hand and add a bit of brown re-inker for a bronze look. Currently experimenting with gold mixture to get a rose gold and copper version. Look what you started Ann! LOL! Thank you for all the wisdom you have imparted over the years!!!

    Like said before, just trim the "straw" so it doesn't touch the bottom and swirl the bottle form side to side.
    Also, I always ad a few small gemstones in the bottle, 2 or 3 is enough, or a few beads.
    It helps with mixing and prevents the clogging.

  • @avalonsattic7294
    @avalonsattic7294 3 года назад +29

    Thanks, Ann! I heard that you should only shake shimmer sprays with mica etc, from side to side or roll it between your hands - never shake them in an up and down motion as this can clog the tube!! Also, store them on their sides so the mica settles on the side of the bottle, not at the bottom where it can clog the bottom of the tube! I will not buy a ready-made spray again...because guess what...I have all the ingredient to make my own, and now the know-how...amazing!! ...thank you!!

    If you don't want to put anything sticky into the spray you don't need to, maybe it will help with the clogging as well. I just spray my finished product very very lightly with the cheapest hair spray I could find. So lightly that I literally just wave the spray bottle towards the paper from some distance and it's more than enough. It works perfectly, no stains, no warping and the shimmer stays on.

      @@Pithfork1 Well it definitely works for me. I just spray it over the paper after the shimmer spray dried and it doesn't come off. Cut the bottoms of the tubes on a slant, so its not bending and touching the bottom of the bottle, because the stuff settles and clumps at the bottom. Then store the bottles on its side, as not to clog the bottom of the tube, where the powder settles. Soak the nozzles in alcohol and poke with a pin to clear them. I love the idea of using the hair gel.. I'll have to try that!😊💜

  • @marykayejenrich7845
    @marykayejenrich7845 3 года назад +3

    I love the ease in this recipe. It's easier to mix a batch of this than it is to go to the store. What a brilliant idea!
    Also, and this may be a bit out there, but I'm going to try to make my own pearlescent card stock on demand. I think it's worth a try. This is awesome. Thanks for sharing!
    As for the bottles. I found myself getting very upset with the lack of quality in these bottles. I've had the same issue with spray bottles. We don't know which are the good ones, and which are rubbish. Hopefully manufacturers will take more pride in their products. They certainly have no qualms with taking our money.

    Thank you so much for this video. Beautiful results. I also add alcohol to my "used up" shimmer brushes to extend their use. After the liquid no longer shimmers, I add a similar concoction to the pens. It's a bit messy, but well worth the effort for my purposes.

    Ann, love all your videos and work. May I suggest the problem with the spray bottle is SWIRL don't shake. Also cut tube at an angle so it just touches base of bottle. Mica or eye shadow sinks to bottom, shaking pushes it into tube and blocks it. Keep up the good work.

      Actually, you don’t have to add much to Perfect Pearls as that mica already has binders mixed into the powder, which makes it stick, mostly. You can always add a very light mist of hair spray or fixative after, very little. If you do ‘t have that, just straight up fine mica, add at a 1 to 2 to 4 ratio gum arabic powder with your mica. It’s a binder, helps the mica stick.

She said that when she shook her bottles, the shimmer powder always clogged her bottles. When she stored the on the side and then rolled or shake the bottle (on the side) it didn't have the clogging problem. Hope this helps.

I make mine with water, and again, have had no problems with over-soaking any cards. I hope you manage to sort out the bottle problem! Have you tried Mini-Misters? I’ve always found them to be pretty good. You can just make up a tiny amount, too, and make it fresh each time, so less problems with storage, as well.

    I have made these as well and I have found that first, you want to cut the tube so it doesn't touch the bottom of the bottle. Add a metal ball or glass bead for stirring. Never, never, never shake but instead swirl to mix. When you shake the mica goes up the tube and clogs it. I hope this helps.

    Ann, I'm not sure if I got this tip from one of you later videos or another crafts one but I learned a tip about spray bottles that give you misery is do to the suction stem being to long that it bends in the bottom of the bottle. They just cut the stem up so that is was very close, but not touching the bottom of the bottle and then it worked. Myself, I have found that sometimes the manufactures machines don't punch clean through the little eyelet so I take a needle or poky tool and poke and twist to enlarge or completely open it. I want to spend my craft money on crafts, not bottles so I try everything before I go out and get new ones that just might give you the same aggro. LOL My apologies to the crafter if it was not a later video of Ann's as I can't remember your name.

    Hey Ann...I was so looking forward to see this tutorial. I started to think about why the Perfect Pearls ("PP") didn't work. I don't know what's in the other mica powders you used, but I do know that PP already has a built-in binder and therefore will automatically stick to whatever substrate you're using, so I'm thinking that you probably don't need to add the hair gel. It might be worth it to try cleaning out one of the bottles that didn't work and then try mixing again the PP and Isopropyl (omitting hair gel) and adding to spray bottle. Best of luck and if you try this, I'd love to know the results. Thanks for the recipe dear!

    I am loving all these tips on RUclips to make your own pastes and now shimmers, mind you, if you have to keep buying bottles to replace the duff ones it'll cost you a fortune lol. My hint of stella has just run out so definitely want to try this, I am assuming that you could just use a brush to apply rather than just spray?

    Perfect pearls has its own setting agent in it..I have one I made that sprays just fine...but it may be the liquid is a little thicker..I know I have 2 of the Nuvo Mica Mist sprays and neither one works so have moved them to a spray bottle with bigger holes and it works fine..

    Hi Ann- thank you for a great recipe which I have just tried using some glittery eyeshadow that I have. the only issue I am having is that the shimmer is wiped away when I run my finger over the card. I used the very same Studio line sculpting spritz so I thought this should be enough to stick the mica. if you have any suggestions it would be great please. Thank you

    These are easy to make. The thing is to find the right spray bottles. Maybe try the bottles first with just water to see how they spray. Then just put a little in the bottle to start with & see how the powders/mica do in them. I'll be doing these for sure.

    Wonder if when you mixed it glue got stuck on tube this happen to me as tried a few ways
    Final result was mixing in separate bottle then put into spray worked great
    Transferred it when finished using it to other bottle and cleaned the spray ready for further use
    No problems since ,rinsing spray when finished

    Ann, I know the Perfect Pearls has a binder in it so you probably don’t need the hair spray in it. Thanks for your recipe as I will be making some tomorrow. ❤️🇨🇦

    They are so beautiful 😍. I love shimmer sprays but they can be pricy so this is a way better way. I have bought bottles before as well that have clotted up . It’s hard to find 99% alcohol I only have 70% I hope that will work. I like how you make yours . Thanks for doing the video.

      You can get the higher percentage from soap making suppliers as well as from Amazon. I make my own hand sanitizer with it along with glycerine x

      @@PositivelyPapercraft I use Everclear, a pure grain alcohol sold here in the USA (I don't know if it's available in the UK). it's 195 proof, and not as toxic as isopropyl if it gets on your skin. it's also great for making hand sanitizer. I've also found gum arabic to be a good fixative. I love your videos, and have really stepped up my card-making skills as a result. Thank you! (And I love listening to you talk. You've a marvelous speaking skill.)
