Plastic engineer here. Your comment about bottles v caps has to do with the viscosity. Anything that has been injection molded into thin parts, like the caps, will likely have a similar low viscosity material. Blow molding produced bottles (like the soap bottle) will be in the middle and thick wall sheets or pipes will have very high viscosities. It has to do with the intended processes for the material in the first place. This is why mechanical recycling is so difficult!
@@alexr2579 my guess is how the polymer chains are arranged within the material due to production process, with stretching the material ending up with the chains get straightened out a bit instead of being in a glob
Yes you need the plastifier to be known, it's why recycled plastic is never as good. It's why the real way to recycle plastic is to get it fully dissolved to its original components.
My favorite way to remove labels, or adhesive after using a heat gun, is to cut off the affected sections into sheets as flat as possible, and then let them soak overnight in a shallow basin of mineral spirits. The next morning it all wipes off easily
Greetings from Precious Plastic Turkey. Thank you for a great educational video. There are valuable tips for recyling plastic. We need to find a cheap solution for stubborn label residues. I use big mesh bags and pre cut plastics into small pieces before washing. I use a a washing program with 80 Celcius at least 1.5 hr .However i am happy with the results. Hi, some questions if I may: do you use detergents when washing plastics in the washing machine? Do you chop up bottles to make it easier to clean? What are you doing to minimise your energy usage? Home power generation? Solar heating? Have you thought of a candy folding type machine or something of that nature to fold out the air bubbles? Similar question about a machine that applies and increases pressure over time? Does static build up in the plastics making it difficult to manage shavings?

The last part was really good. A lot of makers and businesses in our country never value their time. That's why they sell their products as cheap as possible thinking they are making profit.
I don't know if I was the one mentioning the heatgun trick (I've used it for over 12 years), but there's a few more methods: 1: Since you're removing stickers from a bottle (or jar), you can fill the bottle with hot water; this can be poured into the next bottle, etc. after you've removed the sticker. 2: If the sticker still sticks (some glue types do not 'melt' completely when heated), then use sticky tape to remove the remaining glue. 3: If that doesn't work; try using water and salt. 4: If you're still out of luck, try dish-washing soap. 5: If still out of luck, you've spent too much time on this already, but you could - as a last resort, try the washing machine. 😉
@@em5114 - There are several types of sticky tape; some have good glue, others have terrible glue. Most of the time, put tape over the glue you wish to remove, then push firmly, to make it stick well; then pull it off slowly (don't use a lot of force pulling off). Sometimes the glue won't easily remove; and sometimes you'll need to change tactics, putting the tape back over the glue several times and sometimes quickly and forcefully pulling the tape off instead of slowly. Tape can also be useful for removing dust, where (or when) you can't vacuum-clean. Scotch tape is not very good for removing glue; painter's tape would be better, but transparent packing tape might be a real good choice; it's usually strong and usually has a good glue.

Just the tips on removing labels is itself a huge timesaver for me… though I’m not really saving much plastic at the moment now. Hey, I was wondering, do you convert your recycled plastic into pellets? If you did, you could expand into many more ways of using your plastics. Last night, I watched a guy make a life-sized "benchy" the boat which used recycled plastic pellets. He had a huge 3d printer which used the pellets to do it.
Have you ever looked into the feasibility of making thread/yarn from plastic? I've seen videos of people claiming to make beanies from soda bottles, but I'm not entirely sure they're being fully truthful on the ease of it.
By the time you add fuel to get plastic and the electricity to melt the plastic, the carbon footprint of small scale recycling is probably higher than disposal or commercial recycling.

If many recycling companies didn't toss the majority of their received recyclables into the landfill, it might indeed be easier on the environment to trust the big guys to do it large scale.
Unfortunately that's not the case, and until that changes, everyone who helps keep things out of the landfills should be lauded and appreciated. 😊
There's still so much to be recycled; care to join a movement?
@@Whimspiration Does not negate the fact that the carbon footprint for what these guys are doing is higher than throwing it away, You might as well burn the plastic because fossil fuel is being wasted to power the melting of the plastics.
Such an inefficient hobby.
I wonder what happened to all the panini presses, ovens, air fryers and other appliances they contaminated then cast aside?
What are those black mats you put in the Panini press?
Polymer clay enthusiasts use a pasta machine to remove the air bubbles. You might consider that. You can motorize them.
Great video. Informative. Mahalo for sharing.
রয়েল প্লিলাগ তৈরী করে দেখাবেন। প্লিজ,,,
Suggestion. Get air powered hydraulic jack and replace you manually operating one on your press. So much faster
You guys are the best!
Big up the salmon brothers 🐟
😂😂
This is a very cool channel
Great video brothers!
Amazing video!!!!
Sorry if this is a common question - your handmade press reminds me of a tshirt press. Is there a reason why a decommissioned tshirt press wouldn’t work?
Looks like a nice hobby, it really looks like a ton of work
It is a lot of work! But it’s also been our full-time jobs for the last 2 years 👍🏽
8:45 😅 People with the photic sneeze effect (you sneeze when looking at the sun or a bright light) don't realize that it isn't a universal thing. I have it, and when a friend said she felt like she had to sneeze but couldn't, I told her to look at the light. She was like, "why?" It turns out that only 18%-35% of people have this reflex. It is more common in women and most people who have it are of European descent.
Haha that’s so interesting! I wondered why it didn’t work for him 😅
Thanks for the tips, I do 3d printing and I was wanting to do something with misprints and supports that would have otherwise gone to waste. I do have a question though, I was gonna try to make silicone molds of thing's I print regularly for my etsy store to use my waste to make some of my products and I noticed you guys use metal molds, so my question is; are metal molds necessary for this sort of thing or are they just easier to work with?
The stamp test only works on thin plastics as if you were to stamp on a HDPE box it will shatter
Hair straighteners are controlled heat press
Could you run the melted plastic through a pasta press to remove air bubbles?
Bought an electric wood chipper for cutting caps. Approximately 2300 caps in 30 minutes
Great video!
Can I make a toasted tofu mold from this setup? I was watching this to think about making self-watering planters from reclaimed plastic, but was also thinking of making a tofu press from garden collected food. Maybe I can toast my tofu into cool shapes while pressing it. Double whammy and faster. Probably skipping a few steps, but when a Wake 'n Bake gives you inspiration, you write that stuff down. Sorry I chose this video comment to purge it. Could be cool. Even mix things together and make a granola. HOLY SHIT!
1. Have you ever tried flash-cooling the plastic?
2. Any alternatives to teflon? Hate the thought of forever chemicals, esp if 573k subs start buying them :D
great stuff
Have you noticed any changes in UV or other stability with recycled material?
What can be done about the foil(?) labels that are permanently affixed and don't react with anything, including heat, to come off? I end up having trash half of a really prime laundry detergent bottles because only the top half of the label will "sort of" come off.
What kind of mat is between the sandwich heater and the plastic?
That was a great vid thank you 😊
how do you go about making sturdy, high pressure wooden molds, ive been doing this for about 18 months now and i had an idea for something on the bigger side
Presumably a heat press used for HTV would work for melting?
I am highly sensitive to melting, and burning plastic! I’ve had to be hospitalized too many times from our neighbors burning their plastic trash.
a great video.
Would parchment paper/grease proof paper work just as well as the teflon sheets?
