  • With the opening of a brand new terminal the Salt Lake City International Airport has gotten a lot of complaints about its design and size. In this video we explain it’s design and highlight the problems we saw with the old airport.

Thank you for a surprisingly accurate account of the Airport’s history and this project. I worked at SLC for 10 years while this new airport was under development and construction. The design team and Airport staff were integral to its success. Nicely done.

I really think people should stop complaining about the walking... So many cities have small and run down airports, Salt lake is lucky to have a Delta and South West hub so it has excellent service in the US and in future will now have far more international connectivity. So many cities would love to have what SLC has. Yes there are long walks... because it's a big airport... be proud of your big airport and enjoy all the connectivity it gives you.

Nice video! The small airport was great for passengers, but I have no problem with the change if it brings more direct international flights.
My only issue is the loss of the smoking rooms past security. People who smoke do so to regulate their stress levels. Giving smokers a chance to reduce their stress near the gates reduces overall passenger stress levels, which benefits everyone.

This was really good. Everyone whining about it needs to watch this. 😀 Subscribed and looking forward to more.

Thanks for subscribing! Our next video will be coming out this month. In the meantime do you have any suggestions on a Utah topic you’d like us to cover?

    Informative video - thanks.
Somehow during our year of not traveling at all, we missed the news that the new airport had opened, and we were surprised and disoriented when we got off the long term parking shuttle. :D We weren't the only ones.
That first trip was kind of awful. The supposedly higher-capacity security lines moved VERY slowly and we ended up having to race to our gate, and the lack of time made the distance seem endless. I'll try to keep an open mind about the benefits of the new layout going forward.

They actually really messed up with the main building... should have modeled it off of DTW. Now people leaving the airport in baggage claim are met by people waiting in line for security. The ticket booths are up stairs but most people don’t check a bag so they go down the escalator and walk right through baggage claim. It makes no sense. Also the idea that SLC has potential for unlimited growth is not correct. Our runways are not aligned or spaced correctly to handle the amount of traffic and the airport planning committee has done nothing to buy or keep buildings from going up on the east side of the airport.

I flew into the old SLC a few years ago. It wasn't terrible, but it was crowded and cramped. Flying into the new one, I saw a world of difference, everything was open and airy and relaxing.

Excellent video! Thank so much for making it! I didn't know about the second tunnel. That will help a lot! Right now it is quit a trek to get to concourse B. Especially if your gate is at one of the ends. As a Aviation student though I definitely see the operational benefits of it. Its a great airport. I didn't know all that incredible history either! I also just saw they announced a direct flight to Frankfurt 3 times a week! That definitely couldn't have happened In the old one

Great video. I must say that, while a definite improvement over the previous terminal, it really is quite ugly. It is just a box (looks like a strip mall) with a flat roof, minimal glass, and numerous interior columns. What is most amazing to me is that the check-in desks look like something from 50 years ago. Where are the check-in conveyors (the combined scale, conveyors that take bags automatically from the scale to the back conveyor)? Did they seriously just put in cheap scales and thus require staff to lug heavy bags from scale to the conveyor at the back? Is this not illegal? And no automated bag drop machines either?

Yes, it’s ugly, and grey is just a dismal as any other earth tone.

Absolutely the worst airport I've ever been in. If you're elderly, joint issues or have young kids it is your worst nightmare. Designer should be strung up

It’s pretty but you walk about a mile from your gate to where you pick up your luggage!

    • @misskim2058

It’s bad design. Each airline should have its own area, gates and baggage and entrance exit area. They shouldn’t be trying to corral everybody into one place. They should’ve broken it in the more bite-size pieces. They could’ve still left growing room, without making it a day hike for everyone. Totally unnecessary.

  • @Ensignpeak

You're interpretation is wrong. The new airport is beautiful? Cheap industrial generic art that is found in nearly any modern hospital? It bland, generic and guess what everyone goes through the same 3 hallways. EVERYONE. All crammed into the same area. It is massively centralized - the old one was wonderfully decentralized as a result of its haphazard organic growth over time. The new one as a result feels significantly more crowded than the old one, and of of course who doesn't love walking through a dungeonous basement tunnel for 1/5 a mile? You're a pinhead if you can't see that.

And in 20 years, it’s going to look dated and people will claim it’s “really, really, old”. Where was Europe be, or even Egypt, if they tore everything down that was “really old”? They could’ve done a better job on the design, 320 feet that’s really isn’t that much shorter of a tunnel. They should have something to move people faster through that tunnel rather than just walking and moving sidewalks… Something that goes even faster. And they shouldn’t be trying to funnel everybody into the same direction anyway. Those colors will look dated in no time flat.

If you could actually care less, then you must care somewhat. Only if you couldn’t care less do you actually not care. So, since you say you could care less (meaning that you do care), exactly how much do you care?
