His name is spelled Georges Seurat, with an "s" at the end of his first name. I did a term paper when I was in art school on him. His work is wonderful when you get away of the pointillist stuff he did, which is actually a failure of his theories. They look kind of gray from a distance when he expected the colors to "pop." But when you look at the work he did at the seaside when he was vacationing, he's brilliant. His drawings are incredible examples of "gestural" drawings. In a couple of strokes he could capture the movement of an individual. Underrated in many ways because people are not exposed to the wide range of his work.

I hadn't seen any of the drawings or many of the paintings. So beautiful.

What are some examples of his work that belongs to the gestural paintings?

I disagree with you on his pointillism. His experimentation was perhaps not as expected but is a technical achievement unknown prior. You have an odd way of making your understanding of art, which is lacking, the artists. Art is not a science and not legitimately subject to any one person’s opinion other than that of the artist themselves.

@@papwithanhatchet902Art is exactly, legitimately, subject to any one's opinion. Art is not a science, it is a language. If it makes you feel anything besides boredom or dislike, then its accomplishing its task, which is not known to the artist themselves.
Once an art piece is finished, and released into the world, the artist has no say in what it can accomplish. I think the death of Lennon is a great example of that. Sometimes the art can turn around and kill the artist.

Ist is all very interesting and well done, but the pronunciation of French names is terrible. Georges always takes a “s” at the end, except for George Sand, but she was a woman and it was her artist’s name. The “t” at the end of “Seurat” should not be pronounced. Please, let the text match the high quality of the rest. Thank you.

I'll never understand the Brits' love of mispronouncing everyone's name...

Appreciate the very good biography but maybe next time pan the camera out farther to see the whole drawing and painting instead of just close ups

Why is there 18th century music behind 19th century art? Just curious.

Why do you pronounce his name incorrectly when you are an expert on the artist? It smacks of deliberate disrespect. And yes...there is an *s* at the end of Georges.

He was the first digital artist in a way. It looks very much like 8-bit pixel art.

Conté crayon is not greasy *at all*!! It’s iron oxide or titanium white or carbon black mixed with (kaolin) clay and a binder of probably cellulose. Have these people ever drawn with conté?? WTH? I’ve been drawing with conté over 50 years.

I love these videos but the heavy swallowing noises of the speakers sets my misophonia off so much. I have left the videos before finishing them, after cursing the saliva filled speaker and the lazy editor. Who ever edits these videos should be cognizant of these horrible squashy sounds and mute them out. They are maddening for those of us with misophonia!!!
