  • Vincent van Gogh's tumultuous journey from a struggling artist to an iconic figure in art history is a testament to his enduring legacy.
His tragic life, characterized by a self-inflicted ear injury, enigmatic seizures, and his dramatic and untimely death, has captivated art enthusiasts and historians alike. Research suggests that these poignant elements of his biography have solidified Vincent van Gogh as perhaps the most renowned painter to have ever lived. Moreover, the Dutchman's archetype as a 'mad genius' adds to the mystique surrounding his persona. However, it prompts us to question: Was Vincent van Gogh truly plagued by insanity?
Despite being a late bloomer in the arts, there was a time when Vincent van Gogh's prospects as a painter seemed bleak. Remarkably, it was only in the last four years of his life that he transformed from a passionate yet unpolished amateur to a masterful genius. Vincent van Gogh‘s legacy now towers in the art world; he is celebrated for revolutionizing the craft with his rhythmic brushstrokes and a vibrant color palette that defy the conventions of his era.

If you really want to see the genius of Vincent van Gogh, go to Google arts and cultures, then select artist, then go to van Gogh and you can see all his work in high definition . You can get really close to see the brushstrokes . It’s brilliant!

The only thing that made his works famous was the mere exposure effect. That's what convinced the Chinese to pay so much for them.

While I appreciate the overview of this artist's life and the reenactment from scenes in his life, I feel as though the narration often misses the artist's intentions during certain moments in his life. If anyone is interested, I highly recommend reading the translated letters involving Vincent, Theo, and Theo's wife Jo to really get a better understanding. I feel there's a lot of speculation and jumps of assumption revolving around his relationships with Sien, his parents, his "ear" incident, and his mental illness in general. It really hurt my heart learning what happened to his brother Theo shortly after, and Jo should equally be recognized as she's the reason we know the tale of these brother's tragedy.

Yes. Other people always feel they know someone else which results in so much speculation. I have never been a fan of reenactments.

This documentary has failed to point out hat it was Vincent Van Gogh's sister in law Joanna Bonger (I might have got her name wrong) who posthumously saved him from obscurity by championing his work. This is vitally impirtant to know.

And in case anyone was wondering, I've been in a mental hospital as well. There is a state of mind that isn't mania nor is it suicidal, it was for me a state in which ideas and the desire to create were so strong that it crowded out every other aspect of life, eating, sleeping, looking after my children and doing all the housewife chores expected of me. It was a state-driven from a place within which few people have the good fortune to go: grace. It is a state of grace in which I see everything as it is down to its elemental atomic appearance from which anything is possible, coupled with the sheer delight of the creation of art. I have spent the years since then trying to awaken those designs into pieces of art carefully kept in cedar chests or in the possession of a client.

To say that Vincent 'mutiated his ear' doesn't quite do justice to what actually had happened. Because it is a proven fact that Vincent cut his ear off COMPLETELY. Not just 'mutulated' it.... Only a small piece of ear lobe remained attached to his head.
A few years ago a medical diagram was found that was drawn by the doctor who treated him immediately after the incident. Doctor Felix Rey. This drawing shows exactly how the entire ear was cut off. Very disturbing when you think about it! The BBC made a great documentary about this historical find and the woman who found it after years and years of research.

Isn't there something to be said about the beauty the effects of time has on a work of art? The story of the artwork over time is revealed by the dulled color. The color that only with the help of time, can be created.

When was this video made? There has been an award-winning book written about Vincent not committing suicide.haven’t you read it? When he was shot he was not in a field but by the side of a road just a few hundred yards from where he was staying. Shame for perpetuating all these falsehoods!
