Paul Cézanne was born on the 19th of January 1839 in Aix en Provence in France, the eldest of three children. Cézanne’s father was an authoritarian figure, unlike his son, who was indecisive and lacked self-confidence. During 1863 and 1864 Cézanne worked regularly at the Academy Suisse in Paris where he met Renoir, Monet and Sisley. He applied to the prestigious Ecole des Beaux Art, but was rejected because they felt his paintings were overworked.
In 1869 he met Hortense Fiquet, a 19-year old bookbinder, who would become his lover. Camille Pissarro advised him to remove dark colours from his palette, not to paint with black, but only with the three primary colours and their derivatives. Cézanne took his advice and the creation of his dark expressive, intuitive paintings came to an end.
The first exhibition of the Impressionists was held at the photographer Nadar's studio in 1874, Cézanne showed three paintings. Monet was not impressed and described Cézanne, ‘as a bricklayer who paints with a trowel’. Two years later he showed 16 paintings at the third Impressionist exhibition, but after a hail of criticism decided not show with the Impressionists again.
Cézanne rejected the Impressionist theories of light, he wasn’t interested in momentary light effects and reflections, they were of secondary importance to him. His goal was to make things look permanent and solid, he achieved this by creating a balanced composition, the result of careful calculation, reflection and logic.
On the 22nd of October 1906 he died of pneumonia and was buried at the San Pierre cemetery in Aix en Provence.

Such hard times for him, he carried on in spite of the rejections. Amazing!
He was a great artist
What a highly talented post Impressionists, unfortunately so misunderstood at his time. He learnt from Pissaro and he gave so much to the art world, especially Picasso. Thank you for this most beautiful inside video. It's most interesting and enjoyable, as all yr video r. Please keep in going. We r so grateful to u.
He simply didn't care what anyone thought. He was single minded in brilliance.
I finally figured out why I like your presentations so much. You establish an emotional connection with the featured artist. You are painting history.
Thank you, I appreciate that. Cheers
I heartily agree💕🌞
Cezanne..for 30 years I had the great privilege of living in France in many of his paintings..all four seasons came and went with indelible memories...they will never fade....
France is a lovely country and Cezanne captured it brilliantly.
The rejection of others is often affirmation that you are doing something original, or at least different from the majority. He obviously believed in himself, despite all the criticisms and his own insecurities.
It was very interesting to learn about this wonderful artist. Thank you.
You need a lot of self belief to go against the mainstream. Glad you enjoyed the video.
Introduced as for young people and amateur artists. I’m seventy, not well known but I’ve sold work privately, in galleries and group shows and donated to charity auctions. Your audience appeal is much broader, as I’m sure you know from the comments, and much appreciated. Thank you.
You are very welcome and, yes I do realise the appeal is greater, which is wonderful. Cheers Paul

I so agree about the wider appeal of these videos…Having returned this summer from France and lots of museum time, I’m enjoying very much learning about these artists’ lives!
I simply cannot put into words what joy goes through my mind when I look at the painting titled The Railway Cutting-1870. Could stare at it for hours. This to me is the definition of great art. To be able to stare at a single piece for hours. Thank you Paul for posting this video and literally changing my life for the better.
Wow, thank you!
good shout. never knew this painting existed.
Tx for alerting me
I came here becaose my art teacher told my class to watch this, It’s interesting, and I love art so this is good to know. Thank you
You are very welcome. Good luck with your art.
I watched this for the same reason! My arts teacher asked to to study it!

It is very hard to be a famous arts like PZ. You have to memorize hundrets or thousands of.everything abaout panting and practise it. Thank you for this good video.
Cézanne's use of blue, I personally find it amazing, his use of it sets the tone of the entire background, with such a rich as well lush texture, to the the background , he's ventured into a realm where Cézanne's work has this dreamy, calming effcet, and it adds such a stable element to the whole of the painting.
He was a fantastic painter
the fire of creativity that burns inside an artist soul keeps him going to overcome difficulties and prevail
Very True
I totally identify, as certainly many others must, with his struggles btw paying the bills and doing what he loved, certain relationships and personal freedom and happiness, and being different and unappreciated for it. Surely there's some of all that in every generation. But Cezanne was such an explorer where his painting was concerned. And for that and his ancestry to the rest of us, I applaud him! And you for these marvelous video lessons. Merci beaucoups, Paul.
Yes, he was a great painter. Really pleased you enjoyed the video
My Teacher asking me to find more information of art and I found this video to do lot research of art.Thank You Sir😊
You are very welcome.
Great content! Thank you
Glad you liked it! Cheers
Thank you so much! Cezanne is my favorite artist. For me the energy and vibrant quality of his paintings is palpable.
He certainly was a very creative artist.
Such an amazing and gifted artist, unfortunately so misunderstood at his time. One of the great post Impressionists. He learnt from Pissaro and was the great idol of Picasso. He just gave so much to the art world. Thank u for another awesome, most inspiring and interesting video, Paul. We r so very grateful to u. Please keep on going and make art transparent to us.
Many thanks, much appreciated. Cheers
As Paul Cezanne himself put it: "For an impressionist to paint from nature is not to paint the subject, but to realize sensations." Thank you for such a detail account of his life
True, glad you enjoyed the video. Cheers
Love your energy and the video! Cezanne is my favorite:)
Really pleased you enjoy the video. Cheers
I really enjoy these talks about artists. They allow a view into both the artist and the human being. Thanks a lot.
You are very welcome. Cheers
My favorite painter. Thanks for creating this portrait.
You are welcome
You are WONDERFUL. your Passion to share great artists & their lives is so ELOQUENT & INSPIRING! THANK YOU SO MUCH.
Wow, thank you!
Cezanne’s painting was my all time favorite since high school because he expresses light with soft and subtle color in less than three in his paintings. Genius! ♥️♥️♥️
I think you are right, he was a genius. Cheers
Hi Paul, another very interesting video. I,ve had an operation recently and am now recovering at home, had artist,s block for a year but have now regained inspiration. So sad many now extremly famous artists lived relatively miserable lives in poverty!! We sure are lucky to be living so comfortably. Thankyou from New Zealand
Glad you liked the video and pleased you have conquered artists block. Yes, we are lucky today.. Cheers
Like many people of vision, Paul Cezanne was ahead of his time in his approach to his art. That can be frustrating, but his work was accepted in the end. Loved the video as always.
He was ahead of his time and much appreciated by other artists, especially those that followed. Pleased you liked the video. Cheers
Great video depicting not only a life and work of a master, but educating so many of us to look at the world in a new light and find a beautiful things around us.
Love the work of Paul Cezanne, the colors and composition is unbelievable. Thank you again and again for your outstanding work.
Glad you enjoyed it. Many thanks
Paul, I love the way you tell the stories of all these wonderful artists. Thank you very much
You are very welcome. Cheers
Hi Paul, thank you very much for creating and sharing these videos. I work for a day service for people with disabilities and in these strange times we are continuing with our service remotely, via zoom sessions. I teach art and design and I have found your videos to be a great intro to the artist before we start our own work inspired by them. So far we have watched this video and the one on Mondrian, both of which are excellent and perfect for my client group. I shall continue to search out your videos, even after lockdown. They are a great resource. thank you.
That's great. I hope your clients produce amazing art work, which them well from me. I produce a video every month or so for this channel so there will be others in the pipe line. Thanks for using my videos. Cheers Paul
Fantastic biography, and will be a great help to us in preparation for our trip to the upcoming Cezanne Exhibit in London.
That's great, enjoy the exhibition.
Once again Paul you have reminded me of the greatness of another artist I admire. I am becoming addicted to your wonderful biographies of these Artists. Your process of documenting these artists lives is particularly helpful in remembering their historical evolution as painters. As an (as yet amateur) artist and one who has visited many parts of France I am fascinated as you fill the holes in my knowledge of these artists. Thank you
Wow, thank you! Really pleased you enjoy my videos, good luck with the painting. Cheers Paul
Thank you for allowing me to enjoy the works of these great artists from my home. 🙏🏽
You are very welcome
Cezanne was not always accepted by his romantic/impressionist peers,
but he got to live most of his life in GORGEOUS AIX EN PROVENCE!! Bonus!
Very true
Another wonderfully informative video as you dig deep for the true history of artists. 👏
Really pleased you enjoyed my video. He was quite an artist, wasn't he? Cheers Paul
Oh how I would have loved to have known these people! Thank you for a wonderful overview of Cezanne!
Glad you enjoyed it! Cheers
This is a really good video! It is well-scripted, well-edited and easy to follow. The length is about right for someone who knew very little about the artist but wanted to find out whether and why attention should be paid to him. Thank you!
Thank you, much appreciated. Cheers
Just went to the exhibition at the Art Institute in Chicago and I want to learn more about the artist behind the art. Thank you so much!
Glad you enjoyed the video. If you get the opportunity a visit to his permanent exhibition at the Orangery in Paris is well worth a visit. Cheers
Love the pace of your videos. Thank you!
Glad you like them! Thanks
I do not know yet why I think that this video is brilliant - but it compels me to comment. Which normally only happens once in a thousand viewings - but this is my second comment in a day. Thank you very much Mr. Priestley!
Really pleased you have enjoyed my videos, your comments are much appreciated. Cheers Paul
Wonderful video! I learned some new things about Cezanne that I hadn’t learned in art history in college!
That's great, really pleased you enjoyed my video. Cheers Paul
Thank you for sharing the wonderful video of the great artist.
Glad you enjoyed it. Cheers
I love your spirit and the energy you poured into explaining. Great work
Thank you so much! Cheers
I spent this afternoon watching many of your videos. Thank you so much for making them.
You are very welcome.
Thank you for bringing the lives of artists alive with your videos. Much appreciated,!!!!!!! Greetings from sunny South Africa
Many thanks, greetings for England - it's actually sunny here too!
Methinks it is no coincidence.
Great video. Thank you so much, sir Paul! I really like portraits by Cézanne. His landscapes remember me of paintings of an architect. Very clear lines and lights. Thank you so much! XX
Thank you. I think Cezanne is a wonderful painter too.
Very well done. I have spent approx. 20 years studying Paul Cezanne and I can honestly tell you I don't think you have missed anything out except for his Paris work and his very early paintings which I can tell you are awfull , absolutely horrid. I have painted about fifteen of his paintings and learned a great deal in the process. I have also visited a number of the places you mention around his home place including his last studio . Anyway THANK YOU FOR YOUR VERY INTERESTING VIDEO.
Thank you. I agree about his very early paintings, they are pretty dire. No surprisingly things seemed to start to change after he met Hortense, although I don't think he could really handle the relationship.. Glad you enjoyed the video. Cheers Paul
Finally an artist that wasn’t so good at the beginning.
It took him a while but damn he created some masterpieces later in his life
He certainly did produce some great works. Just shows what can be done if you stick at it.
Thank you for teaching me, again, more!
My pleasure! Cheers
As you said, I really enjoyed this video.Really interesting! Additionally I was able to practice my understanding of English pronunciation, you speak in such a clear voice. Thanks so much!
Thank you and good luck with your English. Cheers

Superb. What a lovely, informative video - thank you for putting it all together. I learned so much. Subscribed!
Really pleased you enjoyed the video, thanks for subscribing.Cheers Paul
The best doc i have seen on this master genius, and to hear of the remarks of Picasso and Matisse reinforces my own conviction that he was, along with Chagall in the top five masters of the modern era.
He certainly was a master painter
Fantastic compilation of his work!
Many thanks!
Wow! His persistence is truly inspiring
It was indeed
EXCELLENT!!! Thank you so very much!
You're very welcome!
I love Cezanne. Once he threw off the shackles he was amazing. Unique.
Agreed
Thank you so much! Great video! Love from Chile!

I love Cezanne, always have a poster somewhere nearby and one of the Aix paintings became a background for online meetings during covid (switched off with Van Gogh or Kandinsky). Thanks for a wonderful video.

Glad you enjoyed it! Cheers
Another wonderful video! Thank you again!
You are very welcome. Cheers
You have to take truck loads of rejection to be an artist by the looks of things. I'm so glad he did, and that you made the video to tell us the tale. Thank you!
I guess being an artist is like anything in life, if you want to reach the top you have to work very hard, not give up and develop a thick skin!
@@ArtHistorySchool True. Plus, if you are of an artistic persuasion, nothing can stop you, not criticism, nor rejection, not even if they made laws against it. I don't think it's about making it to the top necessarily either, which is just as well in my case. It's just like birds have to fly and fruit trees have to bear fruit I reckon! :) Thanks for your replies and entertaining and informative videos.
I just love these videos!! so much to learn!
Glad you like them!
Great stuff! Thank you. Those colours bring to mind Stravinsky & Rimsky Korsakov.
Interesting, it was Kandinsky who was the one who made a number of paintings of music.
OUI , l « really enjoyed « watching / listening
to you , your lively / animated way of presenting
the artists is totally awesome ‼️👌
It makes « toute la difference « 🤗
Gros MERCI 💓 de Québec 🌏
Really pleased you enjoyed it Cheers
Thank you so much, this was such an an amazing work on his life.
Glad you enjoyed it!
As a painter for over 50 years; I don't fit the criteria of student or amateur but still, I see these videos as a totally enjoyable experience. Sure, there are few surprises in the history data but the presentation and illustrations are so smooth and to the point, that I re visit these videos periodically and wish that everyone who can will get to take the time to grow their artistic intellect a bit richer.
Thank you very much! Much appreciated. Cheers
Wonderful videos ! Thank you very much for your time and efforts 👏🏼👏🏼
You are very welcome.
You are very welcome.
Thank you so much! Learned something new.
Glad it was helpful! Cheers Paul
Yes sir ,I really enjoyed this description of the life of Cezanne, also gained the knowledge that Emile Zola was his friend. Since I am a senior diploma in French language am interested both in French literature as well as French painters.
Really pleased you enjoyed the video and learnt a little about Emile Zola. Cheers
Awesome presentation, thank you very much.
Glad you liked it! Cheers
I was an art teacher for 25 years and I used Paul Cezanne to teach volume for it was him that said "See nature in terms of the cone, the cylinder and the sphere" i was able to learn that you can also talk about the cube and the plane.. which is prevalent in man made objects .. which also exist in art and was discussed by Paul Cezanne, "the father of Modern art.. "
He was a create artist and innovator.
Bathers (1870) - absolutely stunning!! Isn't it amazing how the lives of these great talents are so intertwined, and how often it has happened over the times? Dr Gaschet a real patron of the arts!
You are very right, I think northern France in the latter part of the 19th century must have been a great place to be an artist.
Cézanne truly was a man of dedication and iron will. He left us a legacy of beautiful works of Art even though for most of his life, he never gained the recognition he really deserved.
Very true
I do love your channel. Thanks for sharing this oh so interesting info.
