A quite comprehensive survey of Modigliani's life and legacy. Many of the works showcased here were new to me, and the best among the surviving pieces support Modigliani's reputation as a seminal artist of the early twentieth century. In terms of his life, Modigliani seems the quintessential example of the bohemian urban artist of the past century, often living a hand-to-mouth existence on society's margins, and his biography often seems to overshadow the actual art he made and its merits. But the art endures, and the best samples of it are worthy to be set beside any works produced in Europe in the troubled second decade of the tragic twentieth century.
Good morning! I woke up and clicked this video while drinking coffee… also “waking up” to the positivity of understanding art history for my own art progress and bigger discussions of culture and ideas. Thank you!
Fascinating art history lesson. So many early works that I've never seen - elegant, abbreviated line drawings. What a shame that he died before he could do more sculpture. I've always thought that should have been his focus. Soutine would be a good subject for a video. Thank you!
Yes, his sculpture was wonderful very much influenced initially by Brancusi. It would have been great to see how it would have developed. Soutine is on my list.
As usual, so outstanding a presentation, Mr. Priestley. 👏🏻 I always appreciate every second and all efforts you pour into each one. Thank you again for sharing your love of art with us!
Thank you for this: I didn’t know about Modigliani’s traumatic background. This has inspired me to look at his work more closely. And Jeanne - oh, that poor woman and unborn child! So utterly sad. But European life in post-war 1920 was one big hot mess for so many, this must’ve further exacerbated Jeanne’s distress.
Modigliani is one of those artists that deserves more fame. Unfortunately not many people know about him. This video is great, I hope more people watch it and learn about his story!
One of the best art history videos I’ve ever seen! I love all the images of old Paris along with the constant stream of paintings with the year and his age, you think of everything! Excellent narration I literally can’t wait to go watch all your other movies right now! 👏👏
I don't recall being notified about this, I love Paul's videos and this is no exception, terrific how so much artwork is included alongside the life story, flowing well together and so watchable.
Thank you for, once again, a brilliant video! Had not seen many early works and did not know he made sculptures. Beautifully presented too. I do look out for your videos. 👍👍
@@ArtHistorySchool you may already know that many artists had or ended up with ophthalmic issues such as cataract, retinal disease, color blind, etc…. As an ophthalmic technician there was a course for CME that was about that subject. I found it extremely interesting. Maybe your subscribers would too.
This channel is always worth checking out, there's a lot stuff here that's new to me, (particularly the sculpture and the sketches,) and on whole his pictures are much better than I remember them being. The connection with Brancusi now you've pointed it out is pretty much self evident.
I love art and I found your channel few days ago and I love it! I watched many of your videos and I found them fantastic😊please keep doing more videos. Thank you 🙏🏻
I more then liked it. It's just superb. This was an amazing voyage into Modigliani's life, but also that period he lived in. So cool. Thank you very much.
What a beautiful documentary. I'm a huge Modigliani fan and I just wish to say thank you for putting this great film together. A propos of nowt, is tha from Yorkshire?
That was very interesting. I knew the basic facts and some paintings, but most of the works shown here were unknown to me, and the details about his background and life... I didn't know them either. Thanks!
Mr. Paul Priestley, I'm deeply grateful for your super professional approach to the art history and same time very touching personal emotional interpretation & the well-prepared stuff. You're actually inspired me to go on with my own channel when in Vancouver this winter. Ukrainian from China, Guanzghou, let’s keep in touch. Have a good day. All the best, Ollie.
@@ArtHistorySchool It's what they're rebelling about that puts me off. But yes I do miss it. Instead I'm ODing on your videos right now. I need inspiration. I have all the ideas but minimal craft/process skill. And half the time I'm waiting for my ipad to recharge:(
Please acknowledge the child at the end. There were 3 people buried, not 2, unless the child survived. However, fabulously engaging account. Not an artist often described. Yet fabulous. I know several very successful artists that have these influences. X
Well, of course the child in utero didn't survive; it fell from a 5th floor window! However, it's two year older sibling, a little girl, did survive, & in adulthood wrote a biography about the parents she never knew.
Amazing lectures, so detailed and interesting! :) Do you maybe have in plan to make a videos about different periods in history of art? It would be so nice...
Sadness and an early demise ……maybe he is looking down and seeing his works of art are cherished and wonderful 🙏! I have painted many of his paintings…..he is my favourite one of my favourite artist.🇨🇦👏.

Fascinating. I learned so much about him. Such a dramatic short life not to mention the tragic effect it had on his love, Jeanne.
Very true.
