Learn about the life of Polish artist Tamara de Lempicka in this Tamara de Lempicka biography. The artist Tamara de Lempicka led an extraordinary life. Imagine Paris in the 1920’s, the Roaring Twenties. It is the height of the jazz age, Paris is the centre of modernism in art and design and after the horrors of the 1st World War, society is changing fast. It is more egalitarian and the French along with everyone else, is ready to party. Enter a young Polish refugee from Russia, a modern woman, a larger-than-life character, a libertine and social climber destined to make her mark. Her paintings, Cubist inspired, combined the traditions of Ingres and Caravaggio with lavish decoration and the style and sophistication of her sitters. This artist, who named herself Tamara de Lempicka, epitomised the glamourous era of Art Deco during the 1920’s and 1930’s.
Born in Warsaw in 1898 as Tamara Rozalia Gurwik-Gorska , Tamara de Lempicka painted her most famous work, Autoportrait - Girl in the Green Bugatti in 1927. She died in Mexico in 1980.

She was a master: created some of the most beautiful paintings of the Era. Just extreme sophistication. 🌿 🌍 🌎 🌏 🌿
She was a great painter for her era.
I agree
She was beautiful and ahead of her time. Truly the epidemy of Art Deco. You can see how she excelled with time. Thank you Paul, I enjoyed this.
Glad you enjoyed it, Cheers
the word is "epitome"
@@rhodagrossmandraws I meant what I said.
@@carolelerman9686 And you are being laughed at for it.
Well, I'm not laughing, and I avoided mentioning when I saw the misspelling because I didn't want to be overbearing. But epidemy is but really a weird used in English, although if it were, it works mean related to an epidemic disease. The context of your (@carole lerman's) comment clearly indicates an intent to say epitome.
People make mistakes in spelling or usage all the time. When I was growing up I had only read the word epitome and had never heard it used, so I had an incorrect impression of how it would be pronounced. Mistakes like these are caused when you've only heard a word but never seen it written, or in my case, I had seen it written but never heard it pronounced. Neither is a good reason to laugh at someone.
I enjoyed the video--thank you! I discovered de Lempicka years ago and she became my favorite artist--bar none! She is terribly underrated and not known well enough. When other "artists" sell for millions for smears and spatters, Ms de Lempicka is an example of what art ought to be. Beauty! Beauty! Beauty!
She deserves to be better known, but some of her paintings have also sold for millions.
The mood of each sitter is so powerfully captured they seem alive despite the stylised treatment
They do indeed. Cheers
Absolutely brilliant!
Cheers
Again, absolutely fantastic and extremely informative!
Thanks again! Cheers
HA. There's definitely a movie there. An aging European Socialite living in Houston?? With her put upon daughter. I love stories!
Okay I have found my new art idol now. Women who challenge the society have always impressed me. May it be Maya Angelou or Frida Kahlo. Today, another woman joins my list of the woman I want to be. 🙏
Yes, she certainly was a strong woman and an interesting painter
I agree with you!
Polish lady gaga
Btw there's Coco Chanel, Rosie the riveter, hedy lamarr and clara Schumann and Jane Austen too
I had heard of seen shows of this artist in the US in the past 40 years. What a treasure. Thanks for showcasing her.
You are very welcome, she deserves to be better known.
Such an interesting story. I love her work ever since.
She was certainly an interesting character.
Likewise I find the van Gogh Monet etc a bit bland and boring
Lempika's art always and forever unique ! 💜
Certainly is
This was GREAT! and the paintings in the back ground well done!
Cheers
Outstanding: I've read books on Tamara de Lempicka but this video brought new facts I had never heard. Thank you!
You're so welcome! Cheers
I adored this video. I recognize some of the images yet somehow have never heard of her. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed! Cheers
Fantastic video as always.
I would love to see an episode about Otto Dix.
Thanks, he is on my rather long list.
Thank you. He's one of my faves (OD).
She had somehow a full life and stays up there with geniuses and styled it till the end .....some just plant a garden of vegetables , but her retirement even was daring....to enter the limelight you must first come to a tunnel.....How strange Life , hey ?... you tell it so well fast paced and thus i will revisit .....each pictures and frame deserve a pause.........thank you for the thrills and excitement you project at us with your very pleasant narrative and tone and coi e i really enjoy,.......it's just wonderful, you are wonderful,........tata
Thank you, much appreciated. I like to pack a lot in so they can be re-watched. Cheers
Beautiful narrating, thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it! Many thanks
Oh My God's I'm in LOVE with Tamara and her life! How could I possibly have seen and known This Woman's artwork for so many years, indeed most my life, and not known who painted them or what her life was like. Amazing woman with an amazing Style and an amazing story!
She certainly was an amazing woman and artist
I could listen to you for hours - I love your art videos so much! Thanks again for another amazing art lesson! Merry xmas and happy holidays!
Thank you so much 😀 Happy New year to you. Cheers
Wonderful! Thank you for such an inspiring post!!!!
Glad you enjoyed it! Cheers
Great video. Always look forward to these. It’s look like these humanist artists seem to die with so many regrets. Her story isn’t too far from Salvador Dali’s or Picasso. Once the glory days are gone, their success feels like it was all for nothing. What a sad way to go. At least her works transcend the time she lived on this earth. Bravo!
But like all great artists, the only great piece of art they have ever produced is the one they are working on. It is what drives them on.
It didn't say she regretted her life at all lol it said she regretted "getting old" and her "declining beauty." That's...different and pretty damn universal. Among women even in their 20's but she was like 80+ with worse eyesight and abilities. I mean the power of her beauty saved at least two people from the grips of nazi germany. Have you lost that to the ravages of time? Give her a break.
excellent video and presentation.very concise and direct and the effects are terrific..thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it! Cheers
Outstanding presentation! Thank you so very much!

Thank you so so much for this great information. ❤️🔥 Could you make a story of John singer Sargent? Or any other academic painters ?
He is on my list for a future video, but it may be a while.
Great video. Informative, suficientely dinamic, and honest. Not pedantic as so many art history channels can be.
I appreciate that! Cheers
I had never heard of this artist, but WOW is her work brilliant. Thank you so much for this video
She was quite a character and a very good artist.
I had a perfume with her name; I din’t know that she was a painter until I saw a poster with her exhibition in Rome. I was for the first time in Rome and I wanted to see a lot; so I din’t see the exposition. Now I regret!
Loved your retrospective, I have admired De Lempicka’s style from the very first time I saw one of famous paintings. Her intense colors remind me of Toffoli’s. Thank you for showing her so much of her art, and putting in context. Brilliant.
Thank you so much! Cheers
Toffoli?
Wonderful. Thank you.
Thank you too! Cheers
Thank you. I love art history. Greetings from Australia.
Thank you! Cheers from England
J'adore ! Entendre the french words and artists name in the flow of your english "exposé " You are doing a great work ; I am art teacher and I used to listen to your videos when I am working. You give a perfect exemple of mastria for synthèse of a biography ( excuse my broken english )
I do try, but I'm afraid my pronunciation of French words is not the best. As a former art teacher myself you comments are much appreciated. Cheers
I enjoyed it very much . Thank you .
Many thanks
I like exploring art history with you! Thank you
You are very welcome
Fantastic! Never knew she lived in Houston. Many paintings I'd never seen. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it Cheers
As always, thank you, what a wonderful history.
She was a fascinating person. Cheers
thankyou soooo much, I have always loved Tamara's work, and I have copied some of it purely for my own pleasure and enjoyment. Some of the paintings that you have shown here I have never seen before, and I thought I'd seen all her work sourced from the internet. Anyway, thankyou so much
You're very welcome!
Excellent video. As an artist, she was always one of my.What a unique style.
Cheers
Wonderful video thanks
Glad you enjoyed it. Cheers
These paintings would have made such great cover art for the books of Ayn Rand. The Bugatti piece is a Rand-style woman, par excellence.
You are right.
De Lempicka's artistic style was intriguing. And what a personality! A hell of a gal. To adapt her style to what was selling when times were lean would have been against her identity. I'm glad she lived long enough to see her works rediscovered. Her nudes and portraits would fit brilliantly alongside the classics of like subjects in any investment or personal collection. Thanks for another excellent art history peek behind the scenes, Paul. 💖
She had quite a unique style, glad you enjoyed the video. Cheers Paul
Brilliant video
Many thanks
Such a good video, informative too.
Cheers
Loved her work. What an enigmatic character.
She certainly was.
Absolutely amazing person. I believe many artist of that same period were not on the same train as everyone else, which made them create great art. Thanks for the video.
She was a great artist. Glad you liked the video.
Thank you, I’m new to your channel.
You are very welcome
each time I enjoy your story, I can say it's so delicious ,I can feel the passion you gave to the art. I will go through all your videos and looking forward to seeing other videos too
Thank you so much! That's great. Cheers
Very interesting…what a resourceful artist/woman!
Yes indeed!
Enjoyed it? Love it! Exellent....thanks!
Many thanks
Well done Sir!
Cheers
Fascinating thank you 😊
Many thanks
Thank you for the elaborated documentary.
I really like all her works and how she evolved. No doubt the wars and moving from one country to the other, and mingling among the elite society and Hollywood stars reflected on her generous artworks.
She was a great artist, glad you enjoyed the video
Very interesting, from Argentina, thank you!!
Glad you enjoyed it! Cheers from England
I love your videos and am glad to see my great uncle on this one (Pierre de Montaut) who had a great resemblance to my father.
Wow, amazing.
Her art work is amazing vibrant
Certainly is
