I think it's an excellent model, a realistic looking spaceship! The paint job is on point, and the rougher parts from the accidental dust just adds more character and realism, as though it's been meandering through the universe and steering through space debris for countless years.

Don't beat yourself up over the painting. I've been painting models for 10 years and I've only started to get decent at it in the last 3. I still put my old, badly painted ones up in my display case to remind myself how far I've come.

Excellent Project Ben- I have a friend who is a professional model builder and is featured in all the magazines. He is a wiz with paint (something I also dread) and uses an airbrush. I have an airbrush and it is so much easier than it looks. He is big on weathering and texturing and can make something brand new look old. The best part about RUclips is there are thousands of awesome model and diorama building videos that are super detailed in their instruction. I love both ship designs that you have done and I think maybe we are up for a RayGun challenge! I know Big Vic and MagDad would definitely be on board along with a bunch of other viewers! =D Awesome stuff!

Hey Ben. That's a cool looking ship. Couple of things you might find useful:
Try not to use power tools when cutting or sanding - if you can get a cheap, dremel type tool with a speed control so you can slowly cut plastics and try to use sandpaper sheets or sticks. A bit more work, but much better results.
Always sand plastics when trash bashing, it really helps with gluing and painting.
Sprinkling baking powder, talc, even fine ash, makes superglue set very fast and very hard.
Using low-tack masking tape will really help when painting around things. Even blu-tac is useful for this.
Never worry about not having glass in a cockpit - the filming models in Star Wars didn't have any!
Don't be hard on yourself when you're making things up as you go. There's no real plan.
Don't worry about symmetry. It's not needed in space. Asymmetrical ships look really cool too.
    Thanks for sharing!
    Cheers ✌️

16:50 Great ship design, Ben, and I genuinely like the bumpiness in the paint job because it gives the ship some wear, some history, a more lived-in look, and perhaps some cool stories for the imagined crew to tell:
"Hey, Captain; remember the time we had to high-tail it the hell off off that sand heap of a planet, Skellion Prime? That was hairy!"
"Yeah, the ship took a licking just trying to punch its way out of that sandblaster atmosphere, never mind those fighters behind us trying to blow us out of the stars."
See? So, don't get down in the dumps about an imperfect paint job or bumpiness when it can all add to that ship's unique story.
Keep up the great work. :)

The ship is perfect but the Rustoleum Hammered paint comes with texture particles to make it look bumpier, that's why it came out textured that way. Suggested solution if you like, drybrush with a sandy tan color and make a desert-seen base it will look perfect, making it desert dirty.

  • @hcollazo2000
    @hcollazo2000 Год назад +1

Hey there. Great job on the ship. I see that you tend to struggle a little when it comes to painting your models. If I may, these ideas might help with that. First, lightly sand the plastic parts before putting them together and painting them. This will allow the glue and the paint stick better when assembling it. This is your choice of course, but I wouldn't use hammered paint for texture on a space ship hull. It just doesn't look right. You can achieve that with aviation gray ( a medium light flat gray) and light aviation gray ( an even lighter gray) as well as the application of gribbles and weathering. On that subject, you can weather your models with a little amount of smashed up black, or dark grey pastel stick and paint thinner. Mix them together and you have a fool proof weathering tool. The shoe polish is also a valid idea, but you have to apply it in sections and then wipe it off. Don't apply it to the entire product because let's face it, it is a kind of paint, and it will dry up..
If you want, you can also try the Tamiya weathering kits. They are affordable and easy to find at the hobby store. Lastly, check out people like the Otaku Builder or the Thyco Project here on RUclips for inspiration and ideas on color schemes. I hope that helps. I can't wait to see what you come up with next. Have a good one.

    Shoe polish debacle. Lol
You can make a wash using floetrol for acrylic or penetrol for oil.
They are both clear resins, just add your color to it.
It prolongs working time and depending g on how much paint you use depends on transparency.
Faux finishers use it for that very reason so you can dab it off or wipe it off and it stay in the cracks and crevices and create a slight color change.
It can also be used just to thin paint, unlike water or thinner , it won't affect the bonding ability since it has binding agents in it.
If you reduce with water or oil , you reduce the amount of binders in the material leading to color loss and low bonding and binding.

Great imagination ben!! Do not ever be discouraged because failure is a necessary part of success!! I've been a artist all my life both professionally and as a avocation.. try mixing up some custom colors.. find what you like .. I did some work for a aerospace co. In ga. In the 80s lol but the color they wanted was not available in any of the paint co.s I used ..I ended up making my own formula it was silver, white and a little blue .. looks very tech .. white is very opaque so I mixed it 50/50 with clear binder.. came out great to show just enough of the aluminum in the silver..just experiment 😀

love this, artistic recycling!! I think the paint finish may have something to do with the weather. I sanded degreased and painted 2 trailer rims this weekend, Simple job, but both have areas that are bumpy and areas that are nice and smooth. I then tested another can of paint on a test piece of metal with the same result.

To be honest Ben , who says a space ship should be absolutely smooth , l would've said that the finish was intentional , after all travelling through space in such a craft , is bound to look more rugged and worn . l think you did a great Job , yiu could say it was an old mining space craft that landed on asteroids, you could even give it a bit of weathering, the actual shape looks great 👍

the cool thing about acrylic paint is that it wipes right off with water. so if you were to get a fine paint brush, you could just dip it in water and it could be used to clean up all your edges, sort of like an eraser. also dont blop on so much paint. start in the middle and just gently brush it around slowly so it smooth on your work.

You could spin the yarn that the ship in this video is a small to medium raider ship which would explain the coloring and add a bit of a story to it, you could also build a character biography with it.
    Cheers.

As for painting, I thought it looked much better than you did. The painting looked very good on thr video
When I was a kid to give models a 'burned out' look we would fill the models with model airplane glue and woud set them on fire. The model airplane glue burned at the right temperature. That was 60 years ago. I don't think model glue exists anymore.

All right, Ben, quit growling. I thing you did a FABULOUS job on BOTH ships. The last one you said was a freighter so it's a working rig. My Sea Bee WW-2 Uncle always said there were show horses and there were work horses. 'Nuff about that topic and I could no more do that than eat the larger portion of a pine tree without salt. A-PLUS! I'd have watched this whole thing even if it'd been longer and you did a SUPER job! We have one flip phone and a land line. We'd NEVER get rid of the land line and my Sweetie swears by E-6K. You can solve any of your glue issues by sanding the items first most manufactured plastic containers just don't like glue but sanding them gives a nice rough surface that gives glue (and paint) something to stick to. Rattle cans are your friends when it comes to painting, decent primer first, then a base colour and masking tape for where ever you want a splash of colour. I'd advise against using the hammered effect paints as they will give a ''bumpy' finish. Mix cheap art paints with turpentine for your washes and use a scouring sponge to take it off but don;t let it dry first and do it in smaller sections. Practuce repainting old toys from thrift shops, we all learn by doing. Lovely bit of trash vashing by the way, keep it up, you do good work.

Hey Ben . First off I thought this isn't a tool but I wonder how it comes out so I fast forwarded ( not something I normally do on your vids but 24 mins in the morning I haven't got . )Anyway once at the end result I thought damn , now I've gotta go back and see how this happened ! I think it's a great result . One of my favorite toys growing up was a home made fort regardless of how you think it came out I think this is great and hanging from a kids ceiling ( pre internet) would have led to many great thoughts and dreams at night !! Intricate paint is hard , but an airbrush would definitely help here . In conclusion. ... I love it !!

I had been kicking around fanfiction ideas set in the Star Wars universe I call "Starson's Gambit" about a smuggler and his two younger cousins. The story is set shortly before or during the events of Star Wars A New Hope. I could definitely see the "Starson family" living/working on board this thing and using it to give the Empire a hard time.

I like your design for the ship, and think you got too down on yourself at times. If you try making another one sometime, try using mostly flat paint, with just a little gloss paint on small details. I think you might be happier with the results, it'll give a better sense of realism and scale. Don't worry so much about bumpy textures, the camera actually loves that much more than smooth surfaces.
