Depending on what type of plastic bottle, the acetone might eat through the bottle depending on what concentration. Also, using a heat gun with acetone

Why use the spray bottle at all......He ended up brushing what he had sprayed.....He could have just brushed it on in the first place.

That will depend on the silicone. Many more recent silicone sealants are of the low VOC type and so this may not work with them. If you sealant smells a bit like vinegar when it's fresh, this should work fine.

If used to spray onto a heavy-duty vinyl, like a Durolast roof membrane-will the acetone dissolve/melt the vinyl?
If it successfully coats but does not damage vinyl, how many years can it endure hot sun hitting it?
You do realize you can just purchase a product that is better suited to do the same thing for about a tenth of the effort you put into it? And no, the results weren't shocking, they were to be expected. You're thinning silicone with acetone, it's not rocket science.

Reusable toilet paper is already invented. RUclips search is your friend.
I use silicone and naptha (lighter fluid), and have been waterproofing tent seams with it for years. It's much safer than acetone.

The results are NOT shocking or unexpected. You basically took a waterproofer (Silicone) and applied it to various materials. The fact the treated materials then repelled water should be expected.

While this works, clearly, it isn't all that shocking and it can be dangerous. Acetone is highly flammable - even the heat gun could ignite it. It is also a lung irritant, so this mixture should not be used indoors. Lastly, you can buy waterproofing sprays that are equally effective and cost about as much as a can of acetone and a tube of silicone.

Actually, most of the store bought spray wear off after a while, I have tried numerous. This methhod works and the waterproofing stays, espesially on fabric.
The guy in the video doesn't seem too worried about safety, but other than that I liked this. If I was going to try it, I'd do some further research. If someone combined all the constructive feedback in these comments, they could create a cheaper, better flex-tape. The idea of using it on fabric sounds like a winner, having a way to create a thin, flexible waterproof membrane of any shape you can sew together could be used to protect moving parts or electronics on a drone or outdoor electrical project that you might otherwise try and 3d print for a poorer more brittle result.

Way cool! Guess what I'm going to do to my old canvas tarp now? 😁 Then I'm going to "forever" water/dirt-proof my tennis shoes! (Acetone saturates all the way through textiles, while commercial Water Repellents are surface level, expensive, and they eventually wash off, always requiring to be re-applied at the most needful time.)

Thanks. I did something similar in early 1990’s. Force mix silicone sealer with thinners. Painted paper hardboard that was in the open for maybe three to four years. It worked😊

I'd like to try this using ethyl or isopropyl alcohol as the solvent, rather than acetone. Maybe a little less prone to explosion hazard...
Wow, people! Did you know sometimes people don't know certain things about stuff. I know there was a point when I learned something new at a certain time about things. So all the people saying something negative about this video are being rather ignorant of the simple fact the everyone doesn't always know everything until they learn that thing and everyone may learn things at different times. So if I knew or didn't know what the video is was about, it was still very awesome for this individual to take the time to share this knowledge!!!

He should have put "how to waterproof stuff as the title" since that's all it was about. I watched it needlessly, until I figured out he wasn't MAKING anything. Waste of time.
WARNING: Do not use PET plastic bottles or sprayers for acetone. They will warp, crack and leak soon. Big mess + fire hazard. Use HDPE (recycle code 2) or PP (recycle code 5) instead. Both work as long as they do not have very thin walls. Glass would also be ok. Make sure the container is properly air-tight if you want to store it. Acetone will very easily evaporate and not all containers are designed to be water-tight, much less gas-tight.
Otherwise this is a nice DIY weatherproofing trick that is very cheap and effective. You can do much the same thing with mineral spirits instead of acetone. This is much less toxic to handle and can significantly cheaper depending on where you live. The downside is it requires much more time or mixing.

Acetone is not very toxic. Actually your liver produces it to feed your brain if no sugar is available.

Yeah, silicone rubber sealant ALSO WORKS AS A GASKET, TOO. Since that's EXACTLY what it's designed for. You can do that with oil-based paints, too. And, believe it or not, it still acts like paint, even tho you're using it just like paint.

I used this seamsealing my tent. Not just the seams but the whole inner tent so I can use it without flysheet. Dries oderless and stays flexible.

You can also thin silicon with mineral turpentine.
That solution can then be used around automotive windscreens etc. to seal leaks. The fluid wicks into the gaps and over a day or so the turpentine evaporates away leaving a very thin skin of then cured silicon. Makes a very neat looking waterproof joint too.

silicon used alone in any form does break down after a few years which is why other products are added to produce the better quality caulking that lasts 30 plus years. maybe try to mix alex plus caulking and acetone to thin and make a more durable coating.

all that happened is the acetone, thinned out the silicone.. to a watery state.. so you could brush it on and make a very thin waterproof barrier. acetone is good solvent for many things..i use it to thin fiberglass resin, so it easy to work with and soaks into the fiberglass better

this also works using mineral spirits paint thinner instead of acetone, or use water and latex caulk, this works with probably all caulks. i am a remodeler and sometimes have waterproofed drywall next to a bathtub by mixing water and latex caulk and brushing it on like paint this makes a wonderful waterproof drywall from regular drywall.

They may be a big surprise to a 3 rd grader who has no clue what silicone resin is or others who don't care to know. So basic that is what any silicone will do. All you demonstrated that you can make a water-repellant coating out of neat silicone caulk

I'm not sure it will rezists too much în sun light.. May be 3 - 4 months. UV rays are stronger.

That asbestos tile was just cut and microscopic loose fiber were made airborne with that hot air gun. Did you know one exposure like this has a chance of placing a little indigestible fiber into a pore in your lung that will cause irritation and eventually kill you? I like the idea to make a small batch of sealer with left over silicone product. enough to do a brick windowsill with the amount i would normally dispose

This may a good quick dry method for DIY (Do It Yourself) waterproofing of canvas and cotton sheet tarps. No lingering petroleum oil scent. A partial day out in the sunshine and you should be good to go.

Hardly "Shocking" more like "Expected result". You could achieve the same result with polyurethane lacquer straight from the tin. With your method, there is also a good chance that the acetone will dissolve the spray bottle, then you would be left with a real mess.
