Tic tac boxes and a dental floss container that has a blue transparent window in it are what I used on my custom MSE-6 mouse Droid builds. I used pencils, even LEGO parts upside down, a old container from a round Bluetooth speaker too. Something out if nothing! Yeah baby!
Carl Beatty YES! Tic Tac boxes are a fantastic idea! Never even thought about those. Thanks for that, great idea.
Tic tac boxes and old cd cases are great for transparent sections like cockpit canopies or warpdrive nacelles. Cleat plastic soft drinks bottles and the right glue can do wonders for canopies etc and, if you have kids who've broken toys with LEDs, you've got free electronics and plastic.
Two jobs ago, I was part of a crew that would cast parts for the drama department of a small college every now and again. We used stuff called " Durham's Rock Hard Water Putty". Easy to work with, water based, little odor, and fairly durable. Not suited for large castings.
Pops out of molds easily. It would be great for blister pack molds.
Downside...takes a while to completely dry, depending on size of object, temperature and humidity. Overnight to a few days.
This stuff has been awhile...since the '40s, I think. Buy a small can and give it a try - It's worth experimenting with.
Scott Thomas that’s awesome, thanks for the recommendation!
Durham's is my favorite substance :)
If you time it right, you can sculpt it before it cures.
Wow, that was amazing. Now I finally understand why I've been saving all this weird stuff!
Making stuff out of trash is a time-honored tradition from sci-fi modelling and tabletop gaming.
You could also rotocast (slush cast) the inside of what ever you want to make a mold of to save a TON of resin!!!! Another great video brother!!!
Absolutely, that is a great idea. The resin I had on hand has a pretty slow cure time, what resin do you use to slush cast? Thanks for watching!
@@TheSmugglersRoom Smooth Cast 300 would work fine but 65-D is made for doing that. I think Punished Props have a video on the topic.
@@TheAtariCreep Ah yeah, that's the stuff. Awesome, thank you. I have yet to actually do a slush cast, but I have wanted to for a long time. Thanks for the recommendation!
@@TheSmugglersRoom my pleasure. I love what you're doing, my kind of builder. I make toys and props all the time from junk and I am glad to see others do the same. Keep up the great work.
@@TheAtariCreep That's AWESOME!
The genius creativity of this channel is mind blowing! Keep up the great work Brian! Loving every episode!
Wow! Thank you very much for that, we’ll do our best!
What a great ideal!!
Thank you my friend!
LONG LIVE RESOURCEFULNESS, IMPROVISATION AND SUCH WONDERFUL CREATIVITY! Just to add to this GREAT PRESENTATION, there are so many common THINGS that most people buy over and over again from the local SUPERMARKET----and by "things", I mean, mostly, plastic FOOD containers----that can just be kept and PAINTED AND USED DIRECTLY without molding and casting needed. I know I'm stating the obvious, but just thought I'd add that in as a reminder of how commonly available potential set dressing and prop pieces are to be found in daily life. Along with things like those battery, tool and other misc blister packs, we have all kinds of bottle, jar and disposable take-away tops and lids that can be stacked together in all kinds of ways and painted directly. MUCH BETTER THIS STUFF WINDS UP IN A SPACESHIP SET THAN A LAND FILL! (I have built a very large spaceship set in my building, almost all of it from found objects...Of course, it helps that I'm living in an area full of light industry where zillions of other, larger scale REALLY UNIQUE items ---like discarded electronic casings, video and tv backs and components, vacuum cleaners, pool pumps, flexible tubing/hoses etc etc are easily and constantly to be found. Wonderful to be able to recycle these things in creative ways.).
Thanks for the video. Lots of fun!
Use smooth on mold release to prevent sticking
Hey there. You know, i tried that and should have mentioned that in the video. I loaded up a couple with the mold release and it honestly did not work as well as the baby powder. I am thinking that certain plastics bond more than others, because the Tap set didn't even remotely bond together. But maybe I needed more mold release?
Man Mold release. the smooth on product is a silicone and the rubber will stick to it.
@@blizatrex Thanks Wayne, the mold release worked like a charm on silicone rubber, but the plastic on plastic was pretty brutal. But the baby powder worked really well.
Good idea to keep another mold handy.
You could try using Durham's Rock Hard Putty, instead of resin. It's a hard plaster, similar to Hydrocal. It'd be cheaper and would eliminate the bonding problem that you encountered with the resin.
My 2 year old threw a remote into our 55 inch TV. Destroyed the TV. Kit bashing time. I go so many cool things out of the TV. My biggest surprise was the LED lights. Now I need to learn about those.
Oh noooooo! And oh yeeeeeesss at the same time!!!
Great idea to use everyday plastic, I've become very accustomed to using 3d printing for everything, but it's really refreshing to see new ways to do things!
Contrivit thank you! I certainly have to force myself to pull away from 3D pruning, CNC from time to time just too keep the creative flow going. Appreciate you watching!
I’ve saved every single plastic tray from the delivered parts of the “Deagostini build R2-D2” project. Now I have a great reason why.
Awesome!!! Thank you for sharing!
2:23-2:30...I'm not the only one....Subscribed!
Great Ideas! Thank you!
These are not ridiculous projects, they are works of art for any SciFi ventures. Been doing this stuff for decades ;)
Wonderful Norman! Thank you!
OMG this is brilliant. Thank you.
Mann’s UNIVERSAL mold release is good for NO APPLICATION- lol 🤣
Would a cooking spray like Pam work? In a pinch, would petroleum jelly work?
@@wadebarnett2542 Not sure, but I doubt it. If either of those contain sulfur (likely) it would stop the silicone from curing- gummy mess. I'd stick with a release agent made for silicone like Mann ease-release 200
@@wadebarnett2542 Take a look at my youtube channel- it might be helpful 😁
I use spray furniture polish as a release agent and I use home made paper-clay (mushed up toilet paper and casting powder) instead of resin, much cheaper.
Whoa! Great suggestions
Dude this is a fantastic vid !
@@Bassgrabber1 thank you
That's a great idea! Thank you for sharing this.
love the bloopers
Great idea. I was yelling at the screen 'where is your can of Man release?!'
LOL, Man release!! I totally used the mold release but some of the plastics really held on even with it. It was crazy. I should have shown that aspect in the video. DOH!
Turning trash into treasure. I like it.
Thanks!
Here’s a crazy idea spay the molds with mold release! It’s made for easier casting removal. 👍
Thanks, I actually tried that on several. I’ve used mold release on many other molding projects, however with the plastic casing it didn’t help. Not entirely sure why.
Fantastic
Very inspiring! Love all this.
Thank you so much! Hope it is helpful!
Love the out-takes.
I'm writing all of this down to add my box of tricks for sci-fi space ship modeling! BIG thanks for this video. This is really going to open up my custom model building!

@@TheSmugglersRoom Looking forward to seeing more videos from you in the future!
The battery pack made the best shape! Kind of Egyptian! Subscribed! 😊
Thank you much!!! So happy to have you here!
Awesome man.....unique video
Awesome work!!! Thanks for sharing! Very inspiring!!
Thanks for watching!
Baby powder is not a good choice, you should use something that is fat-based.
What worked very well for me is Vaseline or this spray, which you use to prevent the cookies from sticking to the oven after baking.
You've got an eye for sci fi shapes. It's like you see them everywhere! It reminds me of myself as a welder, I can't not see a weld when I'm out in the world Your eye just becomes trained to see it. You managed some really cool combos there. That 9V battery shell was cool
Thank you! I totally know what you mean. Really appreciate the feedback and thanks for always watching!
I just watched another video of a movie used Sci Fi model being dusted off, reinforced on the inside, upgraded with actual fiber optic (or LED) lighting as well as 3 separate power packs and I was REALLY impressed to see layers of thick paper had been used to add "fine" detail to the hull of the spacecraft! Paper, like an Exacto knife cut-up manilla file folder for crying out loud! I never would have thought to do that!
~ Carry on Sci Fi fans!
Great video. I've been having a lot of fun casting recently!
i really appreciate your parts and supplies list. resin..metal powders...I would'nt know where or how to use these things! 2 thumbs up! 👍👍
Yeah it’s official my mind has just been blown! Such a great idea and they look so good the options are limitless very cool.😎
Thank you! Yep, when Raider Badlands sent me this idea I felt the same way. Such a cool method. So glad you liked it!
This is such a cool idea! Thank you for sharing. I really want to try this now!
Figments Made thank you, so glad it inspired you!
Another fantastic video!!
Ed Perello Ed . . . You rock sir! Thank you
Graphite powder works just as well as aluminum, but darker, and you can turn the resin black just by mixing in some more.
Cool! Thanks for the tip!
How have I just heard of this channel? I like this guys attitude. And creativity. Good Lord I am still in the apartment stage of my life; too bad I can't build an entire Cockpit like game room similar to his basement without ruining the apartment ha. Need to do it in a way it can be completely portable.
Thank you! Glad you like the channel. You could always build things in your apartment that are not permanent or attached to any walls that would cause damage.
@@TheSmugglersRoom After posting that comment I looked up a few "How to modify your apartment without ruining it" hahah. There are definitely people out there that build false walls and then put things ONTO those. It's certainly doable. First things first I need a wall alcove like your area where your Poster was next to the greebly bits, where you put up that long custom light fixture.
take the hyperloop challenge! make a youtube video showing a pod, a tube and show people getting into hyperloop pod, getting out of the pod. put the door in the side of the tube. like a old tumble dryer door. add sound FX . your 200 mile hyperloop track can be a scale model. remember it does not need to work, as its science fiction video. can be powerd by any renewable or magical energy. bulk snake oil , beeswax , AA batteries , mass hamster power farms or solar panels show how your hyperloop will circumnavigate the globe in just 1 hr. because that's amazing and more tham other hyperloop videos showing reimagined science. magical science. remember donate any funds you get from gullible investors to charity if your not running a scam!
Not only is this a great idea but the outtakes at the end literally made me laugh out loud 😂
Thanks again Brian for great content 👏👏👏
LOL! Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
Hmmm, ever tried out Alginat? None toxic, but a bit flabby, like Silikon. In Europe 5 kg cost about 65 EUR, that`s about 78$. Can be coloured with metallic epoxy colours. I´m happy with the results.
I do this all the time!
Awesome!
Hi, I've come across your videos and found them both informative and entertaining. I would like to make a suggestion regarding the clear packing from the items up purchased. How about painting the interior Silver and painting the outside the what ever color you are using. You can then scratch the exterior paint off exposing the silver beneath. Just a thought for your consideration. Keep up the great videos.
Great idea!!!
This is life changing! i,m always trying to find stuff around the house that i can use for anything star wars! i love this!!
Thank you! The world of SciFi trash is at your fingertips!!!

@@TheSmugglersRoom Hey, what brand was your tap and die set? It has a totally different shape than the one I initially showed you.
Raider Badlands I will look for you and see. It’s a really old set.
That's awesome great work i find things in the trash laying around and make things myself but to mold them is another level thanks
Try easy filler/plaster. Im guessing its cheaper than resin and does the work ok in flexible plastic molds should be easy to remove
That was a real cool video
chrono2959 thank you very much, glad you enjoyed it!
Oh wow, that's something I've ever done... My mind is spinning with all the ways I can use this! ❤️ Thanks dude
PS. Have you set yourself a challenge to use a hard drive platter attachment spindle in EVERY video? Haha
LOL! I have not set a goal on the hard drive platter, but I sure need to!!!! :) . Thanks for watching and the support!!!
Your dope homie...I do this too..I call it craft cannibalism lol
Woohoo! Ive been waiting for this episode! This has been one of my favorite videos from you. Just wondering, have you ever thought about live streaming?

so glad i found this channel you have some great ideas
Thank you very much, we are glad you found us too! Welcome!
Someone else probably suggested it, but you need a spray-on release agent. I think that's sold at the craft stores.
Thank you, and yeah we did try the Mann release agent for casting. I should have shown that in the video. I don't think we used enough of the release agent when I poured, or something else went wrong, but we'll try again. Thanks!
Amazing build brother. Learned alot. Never tried anything resin because of small place.. also dont want my service dog to get a hold of anything like that. Keep it in mind.
Thank you! Yeah, dogs getting a hold of that stuff would be bad, we keep it away from ours for sure.
Mind blown....
Thank you, glad it was helpful!
I drive my wife nuts with the stuff that I refuse to throw away. Hopefully buy the time I retire and we move to our new house that has a shop that I can totally dedicate to model making she can see that it is not a waste of time.
Polyester Parfilm mold release like ultra4 is handy and makes things easy to remove.
Awesome! Thank you for the tip!
Great video! Love what you did with the plastic lid, that looked great!
Thanks so much! 😊
Great video brother!! Keep it up..
Much Appreciated!!!
So cool! I have resin from art projects! I didn’t have or want to buy the aluminum powder so I used edible silver dust ($4.79) mixed with the Abby powder when I poured the resin- came out great just using leftovers and trash.
Baby powder not Abby powder 😂
@@Sal-ec4yf Pssst hey bud if you click on the 3 little dots in your comment yeah that's them you're right you can hit edit and actually go in and correct any misspelled or extra or left out words.
This is a really clever and smart technique. I never thought about doing this, but I'm definitely going to give this a try in the future! Awesome work as usual... your videos are always entertaining and I look forward to them. Keep it up!
Prop Rocks thank you so very much. You are always so supportive of our geeked out stuff and we can’t thank you enough!
@@TheSmugglersRoom well thank you. Especially for the tip since I never thought of doing until I watched this video. :)
Use shoe polish first on the plastic piece and they will separate much easier.
Awesome tip! Thanks
Here's the thing from my point of view. It's not "ridiculous" but it did seem pretty wasteful to me. I think instead of using all that resin I would find ways to fill in a lot of the mold so I just had thick walls instead of solid blocks.
I save everything and throw it into a greeblies box. Another thing is all that vacuum form packaging. A LOT of it has large flat areas that you can cut out and get free plastic sheet. Of course you save the interesting shapes like you've shown.\
I found the best rocket nozzles but I'm not sharing because everyone will use them before I get a chance to and then it will look like I'm the one who copied. :)
Hey bud. Just some pam coking spray will do great to allow the resin to release
Cool, thanks
Use plaster to cast your stuff, it's so much cheaper then resin.
Plaster certainly works, however it does not hold up as well as resin.
You can also use the cooking spray Pam instead of baby powder and the Pam will spread more evenly then the powder
That’s not a bad idea, I never thought of trying that!
cooool
Petroleum Jelly works great for separating parts.
whoa! Thanks, i never thought about that.
Wow...Gotta get me some resin!
Yeah buddy!
Great video and great ideas!
I may be missing something obvious: but why did you not just use (cheaper) platter of Paris for casting off of the plastic containers directly?
Dumpster Divin!! Yeah Baby!🦎
right? So may treasures to find!!!
just found your channel bud. love your videos. makes me want to turn my garage into a workshop.

Great work! (Never mind that 'less is more" guy) Hope this helps--> Mann ease release 200 (smooth-on) I use dry rice to calculate volumes, so I don't have water near the resin and to ensure There's no water contamination in the mold
Thanks Mark! Much appreciated. I was telling @WayneBakken below that I totally tried the Mann Mold Release on a few of the plastic pieces, but for whatever reason it didn't work. I use it on my Silicone molds all the time, but some of that plastic was brutal!
Great tip on the rice!!! That's a great idea. Saves time drying and blasting with air to remove water. Thanks for that awesome tip!!!!
You’re right! That’s PolyEthelyne! Sorry, I’ll check my notes and give you a solid answer. -Mark
Ps- I always shoot through all comments to make sure I’m not redundant...I guess I missed that one 🤭
BTW- baby powder will give you a satin or eggshell finish (as any mold release agent will) but it’s unpredictable. The GOOD news is that satin (or eggshell) finishes don’t require much sanding before painting!!
Gratuitous Sets no worries at all, I really appreciate the feedback. I just couldn’t believe that it was so difficult to remove some plastics and not all. I should have studied more science as a younger man 🤣🤣🤣
Mann 2831 is the brush on dissolved wax type release- that should do it. you used 200 spray?
@PunishedProps⭐⭐⭐ I think you guys will enjoy these Giant Greeblies. ⭐⭐⭐
Thank you very much!
If you want to go cheap just glue an ice tray to the wall and spray paint it. Lol
That’s too easy 🤣
Have you considered using spam or other non-stick spray when making these items?
You shoulda used mold release or something like it. Vasoline maybe would work
I'm worried about using parts from things that I'm familiar with. I think I might recognise it and destroy the illusion.
"Oh look, it's a hard drive bearing assembly" 😔
5:55 That's a vintage STAR WARS toy. I actually have one of those myself. I got it at a comic book store, and it was actually pretty cheap.
Are you in Denver? Do you use the Reynolds store there?
Gratuitous Sets yes I do!
Look up PVA RELEASE FILM from Fibre Glast. You can use a Walmart Campbell Hausfeld sprayer to spray it on and the parts will come right out.
rallycsx thank you! I will do that for sure!
Brilliant. Time to retrieve that Panda Express container from the trash.

Bearded Gremlin right?!?!? Thank you!!
Yes, you need a separating agent. Be sure to find one comparable with your resin.
Thanks for the tip!
Could UV Resin work for the same application?
possibly, but it might be more expensive than the SmoothOn product.
