GMFlash has the ultimate proof of turntablism decades before it was a household term...'Grand Master Flash on the Wheels of Steel' from SugarHill Records. I didn't realize it was all manual until I saw that kitchen scene in 'Wild Style', years later! Big up, this video is a good lesson for B-boys as well as DJ's!

Herc did not loop records..He was not an on beat dj.. he was the pioneer of playing multiple breaks.. Flash pioneered remixing these breaks in a dance able form..

peace rob... i'm 57 from the bx & was around alot of jams... i went to school with grand master caz, jdl, prince whipper whip, funkmaster wiz & dotarock (r.i.p.) herc is the man cause he was 1st in the bx but was'nt that dope... neither was bam... flash, theodore & chase came after but were way doper... none of these guys can mess with you or your crew of course but i salute you all... also i'm a pretty dope breakbeat dj & mc since 1976... peace & blessings

Herc's "merry go round" was hit or miss. Flash invented the slipmat and a cueing switch which made it seem less.

As a very serious hip hop history enthusiast I always thought it was uncontested that Herc was the first to play 2 of the same or similar breaks and loop them.. It's funny bc during a hop honors show flash used the term Merry go round to describe 3 DJ's taking turn at the decks. I feel as the years go on and flash is getting older he seems to be wanting to take credit for creating everything that hop DJ's do and use, hardware and Technics. I do know that flash was a huge contributor and I was always a fan. Anyway sorry for the rant and thanks again Rob Swift
They both aren't being honest because they both were emulating DISCO dj's, Flash came up under Pete "dj" jones, and Pete was extending breaks way before flash got down with hip hop. He just didn't make it his main thing as he wasn't djing for young street people, he was djing for more upscale older people.
With Herc, he says hip hop came about at his back to school jam in 1974, but if you read various interviews, he started spinning breaks around a year later after that. Plus, he was not the first to have a massive sound system, his first sound system was a home system, but once he saw kool dj dee, he got the same equipment, and started doing his thing.
Hip hop has a lot of myths, and lies, but its because the real people who were doing it back then are either dead, was in the streets(hip hop is street music) or reporters didn't know the truth so they just accepted what a few people said, but those people are now beefing over the truth(bambatta,herc,flash) because it was all lies in the beginning!

Watch the founding fathers documentary also, as it shows how big djing was in NYC at the time, and how this brought hip hop into existence. You also have to study the gangs as they also played a major part in hip hop being birthed! Racism in NYC was another reason.

she is totally right, I think that this aspect of things is not really well documented.
I watched a video about the soud system in queens at the very beggining of the ouvement and one of them was jamican too, he said that
he got everything from King Tubby is jamaica before he went to the USA.
Yes! Jamaicans were "rapping" aka "Deejaying" over records all the way back in the 50s. Then around the mid to late 60s, "versions" appeared. Basically an instrumental on the B side of the song that was on the A side. This way the Deejay could have a clear track to rap on. Sometimes they would include a snippet of vocals. Look up famous DJs like I Roy, King Stitt, Count Matchuki.
What what is not well documented is that there were sounds systems un America before Herc came to American. As well Jamaicans getting what they call toasting from American radio DJs who were Jive talking.

Great to see that fragment with Flash again! I'm currently working on a follow-up to that documentary, revisiting all the interviewees from that film.
😂 we did too because we didn't have equipment. By the time we got mixers we were so intune already. Same with turntable without pitch control. We started by manually adjusting the pitch.
Herc had the idea of using break beats, and flash used his disco dj techniques to improve on it. Disco Dj's were already mixing clean, and extendeding breaks before herc, and flash. Flash came up under Pete"dj" Jones, and improved by making everything faster.
A lot of misinformation when it came to Jamaica and Equipment/Dj Styles. DJ Styles are a disco NYC dj thing, you know this because Jamaican dj's have no techniques, there thing is about the music, that's it. The same with equipment, Jamaicans dj's only used ONE turntable, this is why they say "rewind", and literally start the song over, while American dj's did it but clean with blending styles, and extending records. The more I study dj history, there is no doubt in my mind Black american dj's of the 60's, and early 70's CHANGED the world with their dj techniques, the story is just not told to the world, so people start putting myths like the Jamaica thing. They only say that because herc is Jamacian, but herc didn't rap(coke la rock did), and his style of sound system came from American dj''s, he said this on the combat jack show.
Herc was too young to attend the Parties in Jamaica, and toasting is nothing but Jive talking, count matchuki admitted he got the idea from listening to black american radio dj's, even his idea of having a sound system came from him seeing southern people have outdoor parties, and getting some money from it. Radio dj's are why rappers sounded like they did before Rakim, they were emulating the jive talking the radio dj's did. The islands didn't add anything to hip hop UNTIL the late 80's, and this is because dj red alert played dancehall with hip hop, and made it big in NYC, this is why the 90's had so many caribbean type of sounds in the late 80's/early 90's, yet before that you NEVER heard any caribbean influenced hip hop
Go to Michaelwaynetv here on youtube to hear a lot of the truth from the actual older heads, which Bambatta, and Herc, acknowledge because some of them came up before them like Disco King Mario, and Kool Dj Dee. It was GANGS, and NYC disco dj's who created what we know as hip hop culture, and music! The founding fathers documentary also deals with NYC DJ culture of the 70's.

@@RCLaROCK1 My man, what coke, and many others were doing was being done in the 1950's by radio djs, this is where Jamaican's get the idea of toasting on record came from, they were just emulating American radio dj's as they got the radio signals coming from florida.
And when talking about rhyming to a beat, Pigmeat markham already had people going crazy in 1968 with "here comes the judge". Herc was not rhyming, and influencing rappers, it came from radio dj's, and the toasters, "hustlers convention album was the main influence for the hip hop generation on the 70's.
@@RealDealy Not to get off the topic even Fela Kuti was inspired by James Brown to come up with Afro Beats, from James' horn arrangements and funk grooves. Black Americans do not get the credit they deserve when all is said and done they are the originators of what we now all call popular music, yes it has influences but its distillation and refinement happens in Black America. As a South African I am learning this now.

@@RealDealy Yeah for sure. I've met Grandmaster Flash in 2012 and Afrika Bambaata in 2016, I would have like to have met Kool Herc as well doubt he will come here. As the trinity that formed the backbone this multi billion dollar industry stands on. But again black culture was the catalyst for all this including the afro latino aspects Crazy Legs and and all the nameless Puerto Rican B-Boys and taggers.

flash was more scientific/ use mathematical approach flash also was a student at a technical school so it would make sense that flash would beat count or place dots where as herc not taken away he used the old school straight drop the needle on the correct point of the timing of the song
Herc discovered gunpowder by accident. Flash perfected the chemistry for the best bang.
I think Herc would get to the break but not at the exact point to the instrumental and I think Flash was more refined getting to the break scratch, juggling between loops, and use the beatbox machine.

None of them scratched and cued up records to the modern sound. They played Disco and old Soul records. I was at what was called the jam. They were not hip hop pioneers. They were park and club music pioneers. Hip Hops real shot came late 78 early 79

Grandmaster Flash came up with all the buildings blocks for what we know as DJing from the needle to the slip mat and even the type of turn table that could actually speed up properly without it soundimg weird after scratching, he literally forced technology to do things it wasn't designed to do. DJ herc just happened to come up with a slightly different method for something Grandmaster flash already had a mathematical equation for. Not to discredit how great DJ Herc is

What's crazy is in this video I can clearly see how Theodore invented the scratch. He was trying to cue up the record and the cue was a bit off a few times and when he probably heard it on the tape the slip of the record was on beat.

I know this post is four years old, but I had to respond just to say that everyone owes it to themselves to check out RC LaRock's "Micstro". As he stated, it's definitely the longest flow I've ever heard a single rapper do. Very dope track, as well.
It's good to see some of these earlier cats like Pete DJ Jones, Flowers and DJ Dee & Tyrone finally starting to get their propers. Of course Herc's influence cannot be overstated, but nobody creates an entire genre of music without influences and mentors. I'd like to give it up to Mr. LaRock for educating us.
I've spent decades wondering exactly what it was that Herc used to do, because there's never been any footage of him.
By the way, mixers with cueing systems did exist before Flash built his. There's a video on here about it.
Technically, the circuitry has been around since the 40s. All studio recording consoles have cue sections for headphones. When the transistor came out, there were 1000s of small format mixers that had cue sections.

In 1978 all mixers had cueing systems. Flash was the first one to do the quick cut. Herc needle dropped.
Let's not front. Sound systems in JA did NOT beat mix. The 'DJ's' toasted (rapped)----the guys spinning records played records, that's it. Herc may have TRIED to 'blend', but Herc never touched the records. He did NOT do anything NEAR what Flash did. Flash took the playing of records and turned it into the SCIENCE of every single thing we know as DJ-ing today. Flash created, invented, constructed, the ART AND SCIENCE of DJ-ing, which every single DJ in the world today uses techniques from.
Let us NOT get it twisted please. FLASH is the one.

And Theodore and Flash probably came up with scratching at the same time since they were learning basically together....----

He and Kurtis Blow also credit Jones with having some of the first Emcee's. A good read is an interview Pete DJ Jones did with the Foundation. It should come up if you google it.

They needed to get history of hip hop. It’s RUN DMC and not the Blues Brothers. Kool Mo Dee and Special K. Flash perfected the technique by establishing mathematics to djaying opposed to guessing to dropping the needle. The start of turntablism. Math is everything.
