DJ Toomp Talks New Law For Producers to Get Paid, Why Most Producers & Artists GO BROKE + More

  • Interview with the legend DJ Toomp who is one of, if not, the creator of making trap beats. He has produced countless hits including many of the beats on T.I.'s first succesful albums like Trap Muzik and songs like "U Don't Know Me" as well as the grammy winning T.I. song "What You Know."
His producer credits also include Kanye West "Good Life" & "Can't Tell Me Nothing" as well as Young Jeezy "I Luv It" all which went platinum before Apple Music and Spotify streaming was a thing.
We covered a wide variety of topics in what is now our LONGEST INTERVIEW yet (lol we know its long AF y'all!)! We talked about how much producers & artists get paid from Spotify and the difference between songs going platinum now vs 15 years ago when selling physical CD's were a major part of the music industry's business model.
Carrington and Toomp had a nice convo about the good ol' days when ladies and gentleman would slow dance at the club (oh how they wish it would come back 😔😢)
**** We think the MOST IMPORTANT part of this interview is DJ Toomp's groundbreaking idea on ways for producers to get paid every time an artist performs their song at a show or concert (sort of like a government regulated tax.) This is something he also brought up at our Producer Town Hall in Atlanta. This is important because most producers have to rely on getting placements, selling beats & music publishing checks to pay their bills.
Another one of our favorite parts of this DJ Toomp interview is when we talked about poor money spending habits made by artist's and producer's who make a lot of money before really getting a financial education

This DJ Toomp interview is golden and honest. I paid almost 6k for an MPC 2000 Studio Plus and a midi keyboard workstation. $1500 for a Tascam 564 4 track. That's over 7k. Just imagine how much it costed with outboard gear, microphone, etc. It was a struggle back in those days.
My Top 3 DJ Toomp tracks are:
    1. TI - What They Know
    2. Young Jeezy - I Luv It
    3. TI - U Dont Know Me
Honorable mention: Parental Advisory - 3Bs

Yo that part DJ Toomp said about dont quit your 9 to 5 hit hard lol I'm literally ending my internship tomorrow for my last day of work to do music full-time as a producer, artist and engineer, my internship pays well which seems super crazy why I'm not staying (it doesn't fulfill me at the end of the day), but I feel like I set up multiple leads and connections for the past several months and also can stretch rent and bills for a few months after I end this internship. I told myself if in 2 to 3 months, if nothings rolling, I'll go back to a part-time or full-time job, but at the moment I hope this music career as producer, artist and engineer starts getting some traction *edit, dont worry though because I'm all about side hustles and got a few going, but even if that doesn't keep me up, no worries I'll go back to a part-time or full-time, but at this moment I feel ready to go 100% on my music, which I never had before

He’s really right! There has to be variety and not the same sound. The industry flooded with 808’s and same sounds. Have to be the clothing store of production! #facts

That’s the key to being in the game for a long timeeee. Toomp knows that 💯💯💯

But which other type of bass can we use? 808’s been done, Sub Bass been done, Synth Bass been done, Bass Line been done, Sliding 808’s been done, Overused Lex 808 been done, Zaytoven 808 been done, Spinz 808 been done, what else can we use? I’ve been thinking about this coming for a long time! Maybe you can help me figure this one out!
