That old outboard runs like a top, when I was a kid I worked on folks outboards as my summer job along with putting docks and lifts in and once of my customers had and old Johnson it was from the 20s really pretty had lots of brass on it, single cylinder and it hadn't run in 45 years and I wanted to get my hands on that engine so bad. Well one day I asked him if I could get it running for him, he said its been so long it will never run again but I could play with it if I wanted to. I took the engine home and pulled the carb of course I had to make all my gaskets to replace the originals general cleaning the needle and seat went through the ignition etc. found I now had spark, put some gas in the tank and that beautiful motor started on the 3rd pull. I filled the tank and put it on my flat bottom and ran it around for awhile tuning the carb then drove it over to his house I think he just about fell off the dock running out to hear it run. He wanted to pay me for getting it running and I just thanked him for the chance to work on it and didnt want any money, it was truly an honor to work on an engine of that vintage!

Very nostalgic because it is the exact same motor my late father, b 1913, used to talk about having in his youth. His description well-nigh perfectly matched my mental image with the reality of your video. My thanks to you. Col (69), NZ.

    Somewhere, Ole Evinrude is smiling.
Kicked into life on the first pull and running like a fine pocket watch, you can't ask for any better from a motor, old or new.

What a sweetheart if a motor right there. Can't believe the idle and the way it runs so smooth with out a hiccup. What's the fuel mix? I'm sure minimally 16:1 or maybe even more oil. Very cool...

There's an old outboard motor that's shown in the movie "Absolution" with Liam Neason, I think it's an old memory sequence, like he's hallucinating or dreaming about when him and his father used to go fishing. This antique outboard has a lot of brass, it has an exposed tall, round flywheel and an arm that oscillates from side to side but I can't seem to find anything online about them. I think the oscillating arm might be how it pumps water through it but I've never heard about nor seen one like it so I don't know if they actually existed or if it's just something the prop department came up with to make it interesting.

Hi Ben, You made me a video last year of a buzzbox hookup for my Evinrude Rowboat motor. I gave up on the magneto setup because i am not sure of the wiring destinations and if the coil leads are all there. I got a Ford buzzbox, hooked the wires up as per instructions. I am getting a spark to the plug, but she refuses to fire at all. I have the points set at approx. 1/32". I checked the timing and the points CLOSE(weird rowboat motor ignition). just a fraction before commimg to top dead center. This motor had been previously seized. Got it unstuck and rehoned the cylinder. The compression is now so strong that i have to use a heavy duty drill to turn it over. I thought maybe the spark is tooo weak for such strong compression, but it seems bright blue. Only other thing i can think of is timing, If you have any ideas it would be greatly appreciated......I'm stumped.......Thanks, Mike PS I have a used condensor running to the points and the original coil and wiring have been disconected. I am also priming the cylinder with a starter fluid/lube mix....i am not using gas through the carb until i know its going to fire........PS 2......I also found it strange that your buzzbox hookup spots are different from others i have seen on outboard sites, however it seems to fire either way........UPDATE...Whooo Hoooo, SMOKE IN THE BASEMENT...I figured it out.....Feels so good.....

Hi Ben. Another great video. I have, what i believe is a 1915 Evinrude Rowboat motor with magneto ign. Coils are shot of course. I was looking for some videos on here for making a Buzz Box for this motor. Have you had any experience with making these boxes? Any good? Any help would be appreciated. I would love to try and get this motor running this year. Thanks, Manitoba Mike.

Mike Johnson Hi Mike: Well yes you can run it off of a buzz coil, what i use is a Ford model T buzz coil and they can be found very cheep, i got two of them last year at swap meets for about 10 bucks each. I think what you have to do is disconnect everything from the points and just use the buzz coil. If you like i can make you a video of what i use.

it must have crazy torque to move a boat at that speed if its doing so little rpm's. there is one at Oakley marines (brighton) where i work that still has original paint. but needs new wiring box as it is rotten through.
