Dirty Omega Seamaster Restoration Vintage Watch - ASMR - Manual Work - Cal 491

  • In this video I make a restoration of a dirty Omega Seamaster vintage watch from 1956, ASMR, all of the restoration is done by hand manually. It's a mechanical automatic Omega watch with a caliber 491 movement. It’s an automatic watch that winds itself by wearing the watch but you can also wind it manually via the crown (you wind it to give it power).
    This vintage Omega Seamaster watch was very dirty and oily when I opened it. So the cleaning took a lot of time, some dirt had almost turned into rock! =D
    After the restoration the Omega watch works quite fine, It's about +120 seconds per day which is stated by the timegrapher. I think there might be a problem with the hairspring but I demagnetized it and I couldn't see any other problem. The magnitude of the watch is very good.
    In this video:
    -Disassembly of the watch and check for problems along the way
    -Inspection of all parts if they are worn or broken via the microscope
    -Manual cleaning, I do this with Rodico (Bergeon), some toothpicks, pegwood. Then let all parts be in benzine and later a double bath of IPA (Isopropyl alcohol) which wasn’t shown in the video. After the IPA batch I blow all parts with air until they are totally dry. The pallet fork gets a bensin bath and the Epilame treatment, balance wheel will only be cleaned with benzine.
    -Mounted a new acrylic watch glas
    -Reducing the barrel arbor hole size with the staking tool
    -Assembly and oiling all relevant parts
    -Checking if the movement works fine and then checking it with the timegrapher
    If you like the video, I’m very happy if you push the Like button and Subscribe (maybe put a comment?) to my channel, more videos will come! Take care and thank you for this time!
    This is not a tutorial video, I’m just a hobbyist and might do things incorrectly. Feel free to give me feedback so I learn =)

    This is my private watch. During the video it adds about 120+ sec per day at the moment but I decided to finish this video anyway. Got a tip from hockeyrd99 that I missed the regulator, just made adjustments to the micro regulator but now it runs a couple of seconds +/- depending on position. So thank you for this! The beat error can be corrected with the hairspring stud holder right away also.

      Thanks for explaining. I was puzzled why you didn't adjust the watch.

    • @Watcheyes

      @@iantelinside Hello Ian, I understand, I regulated it but it seems that beat has some error to it (so regulation didn't do any good). Unfortunately I have went through a long list of problems but haven't solved it. Next would be to have a tool to check the hairspring but that one is expensive so better to change the whole balance.

    New to your channel. Great photography work regarding the servicing of the Seamaster. My grandfather left me numerous watches (including a beautiful Seamaster from the late 50's early 60's) and since I am now retired, thought it would be cheaper and more entertaining to learn how to service them myself. I recently purchased an old L&R from the 20's or 30's and currently in the midst of restoring it (complete overhaul of motor, wiring and paint). I plan to start out on the cheaper watches first (Timex, etc.) and work my way up :-)! Cheers!!

For myself the number 1 thing to have was a microscope for checking damages and if the cleaning process was fine afterwards. This has been invaluable.

      Yeah, it most certainly can. He either doesn't have the knowledge how to or he is lazy and doesn't care. The beat error on this Omega is adjusted by actually turning the collet where the hairspring is pinned to on the balance wheel. Rate is adjusted by simply moving the pins away from the stud. The hairspring must be perfectly centered between the pins first when the balance is at rest. He's no watchmaker.

    Regarding regulating this watch... the regulator is all the way to slow side... but that's just the micro-regulator. If you actually push the other side where the banking pins for the hairspring are, you can move that towards the hairspring stud without moving the micro regulator. See how at 14:53 those parts are on two different levels? I made that mistake myself the when working on one of these the other day. You have plenty of room to move the banking pins towards the hairspring stud.. should slow it down good.. then put the micro regulator back in the middle so it looks pretty! lol Hope that makes sense.

    • @Watcheyes
      @Watcheyes  2 года назад

      Hello Sir, I dont quite follow. Yes the regulator was put to the slowest when I investigated it. But its some beat error so regulation is not correct method. How is it possible to move the banking pins when they are fixed to the pallet fork bridge? Everything is in level, might be camera that gives this effect, I couldnt see any problem of level atleast. Thank you for the tip.

    • @hockeyrd99
      @hockeyrd99 2 года назад +2

      @@Watcheyes Sorry for the confusion... I didn't mean the banking pins for the pallet fork (I should have said the regulator pins). I meant the part of the balance regulator that has regulator pins for the hairspring (follow the hairspring from the stud and it goes through those tiny pins). What I am trying to say is that you don't need to use that buggy whip micro regulator. I'd move that regulator back to the middle, then push the other side with the regulator pins towards the hairspring stud to slow it up. The buggy whip regulator and the part with the regulator pins move separately, so if you move the part with the regulator pins (push it with your tweezers or a tiny screw driver), it shouldn't move the micro regulator. You can always use the micro-regulator later if needed.

    Wearing automatic watch is like riding a time machine back to 1900s. Wearing such a stupid stuff like that is bad for your mental health.

    ASMR, no talking but I'm reading even though it's a video, no voice over, NOT showing full work.... I'm gone

    I enjoyed you video but the very large rate error is unacceptable. Why didn't you make an attempt to regulate it? The movement is not keeping time even and therefore your efforts were wasted.

      Hello Mike, yes I'm sorry for this but within this project I couldn't right now find the problem. I did demagnitize it a couple of times and regulated it, it kept going around +120 s. I'm thinking if the hairspring might have been changed lately and might not be correct length or something. Maybe I find the problem later on. Nice that you liked the video, thank you.

    Damn, I wish my Father's Omega from 1950ties was treated like this.
