Also has any one noticed it is not a swing, it is a turn. It is a kinetic movement driven by his hips. Angular momentum that creates its speed or velocity. Once you connect to the bat with both hands they can never move without rolling over unlesd you turn your body. Ted Williams figured this out in his book the Science of Hitting. Wow in 1971 and we still cannot get it right.
Exactly. The swing is over before the bat even crosses the strikezone. Check out teacherman hitting. He figured it out by watching Barry Bonds for twenty years. His drills teach exactly this.
Back 1 year later and i can say that i had my head up my ass a year ago when understandding the swing... I have my swing working a shitton better now though.
The quote "firing his wrists" is not accurate. It is the mass and momentum of the barrel that causes the right hand to pass the left hand. The hands are just along for the ride at that point. On MLB Network, Donaldson says he tries to do as little as he can with his hands. On a power swing with this kind of velocity, it is physically impossible (neurologically and muscular strength vs. leverage/forces involved) to fire the wrists to drive the barrel through contact. Sometimes this Sports Science series is not very scientific. They really should know better.
They implied his body was creating the potential energy, I'm sure they didn't mean his hands or wrists are generating significant force. In fact they said they're the last lever in sequence. That's exactly what they are. The hands are the last part of the kinetic chain to unfold. It's not necessarily fundamental to rotational hitting to say the hands aren't a functional part of delivering the barrel and force in a direction. Donaldson sometimes mentions he thinks like his hands are the last thing going to the ball, he might have said he tries not to think of them but I've heard him phrase it that way before. And he also talks about how the initial move of the swing is a function of hands and arms, what he calls reversing your swing. Then separation and torque is created against the hips and shoulders, and your hands and elbows play a vital role in forming the proper levers do this with the bat on plane. A new thing a lot of great rotational coaches are talking about today is "torquing the barrel" and basically finding the spot between the hands where you feel you can manipulate the bat rotationally. I don't have any problem with the video's description. The full quote was: "This large (hip/shoulder) separation creates loads of potential energy, which converts into kinetic energy when his *shoulders snap forward* . As his *upper body rotates* , Donaldson maximizes his hand speed by firing his wrists just 29 milliseconds before contact. Because his wrists are the last lever in his kinetic chain, they rotate faster than any other link" They're actually emphasizing how much he's keeping his hands back until the last moment. They're also saying there's enormous potential energy when the hips rotate ahead of the shoulder, which is converted into enormous kinetic energy when his shoulders "snap" forward. This upper body rotation, they're saying, maximizing his hand speed, and they demonstrate how all that rotational energy sort of "climaxes" in the link between the hands which have the highest rotational velocity of any other lever. They were emphasizing how late his wrists rotate the bat to the ball prior to contact, that's actually what that measurement is but I don't know exactly how they measure it. It was a measurement of the hands rotational velocity as a lever, which basically has a linear relationship with bat speed. So in a very fundamental way, the hands deliver the bat. The only thing I wish they talked about more is how he creates such efficient, level plane, and how this maximizes his ability to make contact at a high rate. This is something all big leaguers do that young players (and pretty much the rest) don't, and this is specifically what Donaldson talks about and what he tries to work on, and what took him from an average minor leaguer to MVP.
Whats scary is that its my 2nd year of baseball and i can hit the ball fucking hard consistenly. My mechanics are clean, but i still tear my swing apart for not being perfected. My trainer was impressed with my hitting and throwing, but when we switched to the hitting again and made a tweak i started banging them even harder. He said, ''You know how you where getting into sequence and hitting them hard? i want to get you started on the leg kick so you don't flop forward like a fish on a changeup.'' But then my power increased alot in the cage and the first one i hit made him have a ''try not to be impressed so they don't stop doing what they're doing but your really honestly impressed.'' And i think the best part about that... is being bullied at school for being good at something.
If the average bat speed for A major league HR is 77 then 1 person I know would hit HRs a lot since his bat speed is 88-94 and his a sophomore in college.
Anthony Ricevuto bat speed isn't everything... how strong you are and also how heavy your bat is adds more power. I can swing a toothbrush a lot faster than my bat but it's not gonna get me homeruns.
My kid is 11 and uses a -3 and he hits the ball farther than all the -12 through -5's on his team and he does it with a slower bat speed because there is very little give on his bat or his body. He has been taught rotational hitting his whole life and started at 10yrs old hitting balls over the fence. 95lbs 10yrs old 220' with a -5. Starting weight this season 110lbs with a -3 and distance remains to be seen, my guess would be 250'. As soon as I hear a hitting coach mention hands or knob I have to explain rotational hitting to them and let them know my son is learning more should plain and getting the bat going up through the hitting zone. I noticed my kid would be a rotational hitter because of all the golf he plays. Linear hitting is way too hard to adapt for golfers. With rotational pretty much the only difference from the golf swing is the weight distribution after the point of contact. He drives the golf ball well over 200yds consistently at 95lbs.
Guessing on the pitch is what he meant to say, baseball is a mind game of pitcher vs batter. Guessing on the pitcher's pitch before it is thrown gives the batter and idea on the speed, break, and the possibility of it being a strike or ball. That also depends on if the pitcher is hitting the locations in the strike zone on the batters beforehand, if the pitcher shows only selected few in his arsenal, and the synergy between both pitcher and catcher knowledge of the batter's strike zone swinging percentage. Josh Donaldson is great with his timing with adjusting to the off-speed pitch if he was looking for the fastball. Every batter is a "guess hitter" but their ability to adjust their swing to the pitch delivered is what makes them great MLB players and even future and current Hall of Famers.
mr white i thank you for doing my work for me me..f i played triple a till i was 16 and i was a great guess hitter to the point where i only had 5 strike outs my final year and 3 of thos were in tournament play...when i pitched iand got ahead in the count i would go up and in to set up the curve there for when i was at bat and a pitcher would give me an up and in i would GUESS the next pitch would be a curve ball and most of the time i would be right and be able to make solid contact with the white object coming towards me......the funny part is i was quoting an article in si about donaldson and how he spends countless hours watching film so he can guess along with his pitches so he can get that big leg kick going.....and these guys jump all over it so if the got a problem with me i guess they should also have a problem with jd himself......fuckin morons lol

Uh yeah it’s still a swing
am I the only one that's impressed that his bat is 32.5 ounces
controlhogger8 yeah, because that's completely normal for MLB players
Sounds heavy
great player and mvp
Donaldson is the best
Does he still play? I just started following baseball
The ball at 1:04 was absolutely DESTROYED! Love it

ur totally right about how the left hand works
You are right. Donaldson talks nothing about the wrists. He actually says he "fires the back shoulder"
Daniel Roland , actually it’s correct m although he may not snap his wrists
I agree every word

Josh Donaldson has great Reaction Time way to Be Athlete and Hit the Ball.
Riley Sartain's Swing looks very similar almost exact to his
lol thats my baseball coach throwing
Looks like a Irish samurai with his little man bun.
I kinda swing like Donaldson but I do it most on inside pitches because it's easier to hit them.
Look for the innovative SMx3 releasing this fall from SportMechanix. The device that creates dynamic hip rotation for ballplayers of all ages.

And i think the best part about that...
is being bullied at school for being good at something.
My 13 year old son swings a bat at an average of 60 miles an hour(wood -3 bat). I think the pros are averaging a little higher than 77.
Daniel Spencer they use heavier bats but that’s good
@Dakoda Fisher thats a 17 mph difference which would be incredible at the same weight. goes to show a pro player's skill
Best swing...... love the numbers........ got him his contract later in his career.. he's not a big guy 6ft 220lbs.
How is that not big
am i the only one who noticed that this video was released on the same day as bautistas dinger
Oofie I did
iVe just gotta work on not changing the view plane of my head when im hitting.
4700 homers? Didn’t know that many are hit, sounds like a lot
If the average bat speed for A major league HR is 77 then 1 person I know would hit HRs a lot since his bat speed is 88-94 and his a sophomore in college.
thats probably not his bat speed its his exit velo
also metal bats hit further than wood
Anthony Ricevuto the average exit velo for hr in the mlb is in the 100s lol, these guys are saying whatever
Anthony Ricevuto im a freshman and my average is in the 80's but the farthest I've ever hit was 320ft
Anthony Ricevuto bat speed isn't everything... how strong you are and also how heavy your bat is adds more power. I can swing a toothbrush a lot faster than my bat but it's not gonna get me homeruns.

I've seen him play 5 times 4 times as a jay and once as An A
Go Jays
Anybody ever think this is all just a fancy way to say a hit.
1:16
yea, but most of those are old men.
he hits the catchers glove at 1:43
bruh, watch the slow motion after it
+Seth Holbrook he hits it after his swing which is hard to see and isn't a big deal at all and I have no clue why he mention it
Ohhh! Got it, my bad.
HE IS
This clip illustrates why hitting a baseball is the hardest skill to master...plus his Head never moves!!!!!!!
great guess hitter.. maybe the best today
Nobody in the MLB is a "guess hitter", either you don't know anything about baseball, or you just hate him.

force = mass*acceleration ... about the bat comment, duh lol
He is Exactly 20 yrs older than me
..my bat speed is a little faster 💪
Yikes
fantasy bust this year...
